What's happening in the David Mary Custom shop?

Looking back at our messaging and I realized I turned into a plinko disc with all the available options. Sorry about that. Got too excited. 🤪

Wow! David your finish work has come a long way. I think that you made the right choice in profession, who would have thought🤔.

Thank you for the kind words Martin. My work isn’t perfect but I try to continue improving. But I think doing what one loves is always the right choice.

Not exactly sure what you mean

I want this. Ohhh, I want that instead. Oh no, this one. Wait, that one over there. I think I told you one thing and changed at least three or four more times.

If you didn't think so then these aren't the droids you're looking for....

(I didn't even order what I originally went to order)

I used to act the same as you, I wanted everything he produced and soon found I chose the wrong profession 🙁.

Slow week so far as I have been doing a lot at home.

But I have regrinds, and mods to work on next, as well as the last Hudson Bay which I’ll be starting next week, along with ROFRs. I have some exciting new micarta from Fixall Fixall too. The crosscut Micarta is for the customer who ordered the Hudson Bay Bowie but the rest is so far unclaimed, as are two of the Spartans.

Oh, and Brian gave me a block of richlite to try, and a pair of grey TeroTuf scales. Those who know me best are aware I don’t normally use TeroTuf, because I don’t like how dirty it gets, but if you’ve been wanting something from me with that material, now is possibly your only chance, unless you order it and send it to me yourself.

I think you are four to like Richlite. It works really well.

Brian these micartas have a chattoyancy like carbon fiber, even in matte condition! They’re great!

Glad you’re liking it! The shadowlands (all black), black cherry (red/black), and carnelian (orange/ivory) all finish and buff very well.

For the wildfire (orange/natural/black) I typically recommend avoiding the buffer and finishing with high grit sandpaper instead if a glossy finish is wanted. The wildfire is pre-pregnated with phenolic in a different way than the custom stuff I have made and it tends to have a bit more minor voids (I fill them with ca at around 220 - 320 grit).

That a guy! I hate buffers. I still use one for my demo scales, but I hate them and refuse to use them on my own built knives.

I never did. I don't like slick handles to start with, but the kicker is there is no tool more commonly associated with grievous knifemaker injuries than a buffer. My mind has been made up on this for quite some time now. Someone wants a knife from me with a buffed handle? I'm sure there is someone they can pay to do it. Any knife I made, if you see it with a buffed handle, someone else did it.
