What's happening in the David Mary Custom shop?

At one point I made a decision to radius all spines on .06” stock or thinner. Then I started doing it on most .09” as well. I’m kind of reaching a point where I just want to do it on every knife…

The new EDChef will have a 4 1/4" blade, up from 4". This is in part because of my brother, who commissioned an EDChef XL from me for himself, then later an EDChef for the head chef at the restaurant he used to work at. He told me that he loved the EDChef (which of course went to him first so he could present it to his former co-worker), but that he was glad he went with the XL for himself.

It is also in part because despite being notably narrower, the TeenyChef has a blade only about 1/8" shorter than the original EDChef, so I want to distinguish their roles more clearly.

I love my Edchef but a 4-1/4" or even 4.5" would be great for some of the bigger projects. Or maybe I just need to order an xl...🤔

I've decided to make an update to the Tanto of Opportunity design. First is jimping. Next, the handle slot has been modified slightly to accommodate a greater range of handle profile customization, and the blade has been lengthened to 5.2". Also, I thought about adding a guard, even though I am in love with the lines on the original knife. Here is a comparison between what I consider to be ideal profile for the handle with a guard, and the original handle profile:

I like both, but as you can see, I had to remove some material on the guarded version to make it ergonomically suitable, at least in my opinion.

So I have decided to split the difference. I will simply tack guard material right onto the existing lines, as below (then cut out a deeper forefinger groove for units that get requested with a guard, or cut off the guard for units that get requested without one, preserving the lines and hand filling nature of the original).

That means I can make Flip Points XL too.

And this tang will be relatively easy for me to taper for those wanting it, so guys and gals can have a big tough knife that is fast and agile.
