What's happening in the David Mary Custom shop?

Almost done these ones too. I started late and ended late, but the skitters were eating me alive so I decided to cut their dinner short and finish the sheaths and maker's marks Monday. Didn't take many photos today. Just spent my time working.... and yakking on the phone lol

But my ride to work is beautiful and only takes about fifteen minutes.

A blessed Sunday to all who would have it. See you Monday!
that is a cool little sticker my guy.

Enjoy a blessed Sunday Sir.

I was planning to head to the shop earlier today and try to shake off my previous rhythm of starting in the afternoons, which seems to have been ingrained in me from working at the plant.

But yesterday I took a bike ride out to Chris' place, not for work obviously yesterday being Sunday, but because I was invited over for lunch and video games, too things I might like more than I should haha. But on the way there I had a blowout! Chris was kind enough to drop me and the bike back off home after.

But despite that I "remembered" having two spare tubes, they were not to be found this morning. Fortunately another friend in town was going to Campbellford today so I was able to hitch a ride with her to grab some new tubes for bike, one of which is now happily nestled into my wheel and pumped up to 60 PSI. Fingers crossed won't have to do that again for awhile! Off to the shop.

Overcooked is an awesome game to play co-op. Except you may not have any friends left after all the shouting!!!

(Overcooked is a team cooking game, where you control your chefs to to fill customer orders and not let dishes burn.... it's fun but stressful hahahah)

I play overcooked with my nephews sometimes. I suck at it, and they let me know. 🤣😂🤣😂

I was pretty slow on the uptake at first, because we tried to play multiplayer on randomized levels at first. But I started to get a feel for it. It was fun to make my little shark guy suddenly sprint around, at least.

So I got my shop time in, but most of it went into shop clean up and rearranging. And by the time I got to working on the knives, it was about 11:00 pm. The tanto is turning out great, but I left the tip really blunt. So that's more time tomorrow. The Bowie is turning out good, sheath retention ended up a couple notches stronger than I wanted, so dialing that back took up some time. Large wharncliffe good, sheath retention was nil, so I had to bump that up. Small Wharncliffe great, but eyelet placement may be causing an issue at the tip, so that has to be addressed tomorrow. I just left them at the shop. I was too hungry to stay to midnight. And yet I still haven't eaten. I told myself leaving my stuff on the counter for nine more hours and eating it in the morning was the smart play. The Reset.

Now I'm typing this post... oh well at least my shop is set up more comprehensively than before. It was working but I had to move things too often. Now I have outlets and storage placed better and a table surface to use as a staging area. I'm actually glad I'm awake still typing this post because morning or not, I have to remember the extra lighting that is right over..... in my backpack now actually. And so much for the reset, I guess it's super early morning chili for me, and then hoping for another productive day, but with more to show for it at the end.

I keep thinking I'm forgetting something, and then I remembered that I have photos to share.

First part of Monday was spent on the goal of restablishing my means of mid-range transportation.

I would have gone all schrader, but he only had two of each. My pump is dual so no biggie, but this means I may some day have to reverse the pump nozzle between wheels. Hard times ahead? hah

The sidewall is deteriorating, so I wonder if this allowed accelerated tube fatigue in that spot??? I also wonder if the bump I feel in the back wheel every revolution is related. I hoped it would be gone after a tube change. Nope. I'll look to Peterbrough and seek the wisdom and skill of Ben Logan and his team at Fontaine's.

'Twas a rainy day on the way to the shop Monday afternoon.

Seeing this table like this (how I'd left it) was part of what set me off on the cleaning and reorganizing.
IMG_6443.JPG

This is how the shop looked after I first got in. I say after because the truth is I left a mess on my workbench. This is after I "cleaned it up".

And then I proceeded to rearrange everything. But the pic above contains the only light in the shop. I'll take more pics tomorrow after I get some more lights up in a few key spots.

Here are a few random pics I snapped while organizing the room.

Oh yeah, I took this off my bench grinder, and cut off the useless overhanging light that never worked. I'll have to think about if and how I can incorporate it, but it now has the newly cleaned bottom drawer of the gutted filing cabinet. Snapped this pic to remember sizes to order for wheels.

Hmmm.... the woodpile at the back and a hammock that Sharp & Fiery Sharp & Fiery might say "Look I told you, sleep in the shop no need to rent!"

Flushing up the edges of some foam with the boards I use as a sheath press.

Really, and why would you feel pressured?

stupid questions...
are you sure your rims are 700c? did you check your rim tape last time you changed tubes?

detiorating sidewalls are dangerous and should be swapped asap! Try some Schwalbe G-one allround..amazing tire, especially for rhe price.

i'd get some Schwalbe butyl tubes, they hold up pretty well...

i went tubeless last year...i was bit sceptical at first but turned out great. Haven't had a flat in a year!

I was thinking about that actually. Don't know much about it. But I've dealt with Ben and the previous owner Terry for years and trust them very much. In fact they built this bike for me. So I'll bring it to them as soon as I can and go with their recommendations. Thank you for the suggestions, I will bring them up when I go see Ben.

My bike before this one was a Specialized Rockhopper 29'er. It was my first one with such large wheels. Why, at six foot five, I never was steered towards large diameter wheels before that, I don't know. But it was Ben who recommended it to me. And ever since feeling the difference between that and whatever the standard size was (26, IIRC?) I was determined to always get the larger wheels, and I was very specific with Ben on this bike when I ordered it a few years ago that the wheels be the larger size. And the tubes seem to fit properly.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit this, but despite being an avid commuting cyclist ever since grade school, I am not super knowledgeable about bike maintenance. I have always gotten by relying on bike mechanics. I can tune things a bit, but I have never replaced anything other than a tube (I installed and programmed a few bike computers, before I realized - or admitted to myself - they were ultimately unnecessary for me), and don't necessarily know what to look for.
