What's on your key ring?

It seems as if every other device being developed these days is made to fit on your key ring. This is especially true with survival equipment. I have a feeling that if we were to actually put all these things onto our key rings, we'd need to use a hula-hoop instead of a split ring, and pull it behind us on a wheel barrow! Imagine carrying the SAK 'SwissChamp' in your pocket? Between ferro rods, compasses, tiny Spydercos, whistles, mirrors, can openers, diamond knife sharpeners, ceramic sticks, ALL with a hole in them for our key ring, attached to a kubotan, there isn't much room for keys! Now someone wants to sell me a magnesium/ferro rod with built in tinder capsule, of course with a hole so it will fit on my key ring. I think the archeologists 200 years from now, finding these key rings, will think them to be "Urban Flails" for chasing off muggers.

On mine, I carry keys. Period. And when I go hiking or camping I only carry my car/motorcycle key and house key, and those clip inside my pack, not carried in my pocket. Don't get me wrong; I enjoy these devices. I just don't feel the need to carry all of them, all the time, in my pocket attached to my office keys!

I dont really understand where you are coming from. If you dont like extra stuff on your key rings, dont buy it. Some of us enjoy being able to attach these objects to key rings. Just because it has a hole in it doesnt mean that it must be placed on a key ring, it could be put on a lanyard to prevent it from getting lost whilst in the woods (atleast thats what I usually use them for).

so don't, you're post seems a bit more suited to W&C than WSS, there are quite a few products out there that can be attached to keys but not only to keys, the RAT fire kit you mentioned, you attach a split ring, some 550 and a piece of fatwood and a small SAK or small FB and violla! survival kit in the palm of your hand, or in your pocket with your office keys.

I like someof the keyring stuff because I like to have it with me at all times.

I didn't say that I didn't like them. In fact, I did say that I enjoyed these items. I said I don't want to carry them on my key ring. So I don't. :)

My point remains: if you dont want to carry them, dont carry them. I dont understand where you are coming from at all.

The only item on ny keychain other then keys is a ALOX Lumberjack SAK. Bunch of keychain attachable items in my bag, but I dont like heavy keys either.

I don't like a heavy key chain either. The only extra thing I have on there is the occasional LED light, but I ALWAYS have a P-38 or P-51. I use the P-38 for so many things I can't even count. Probably the smallest, simplest and cheapest SAK type thing you can carry IMO.

I guess a lot of the decision may be based upon where we live and the work we do. I live in a cement jungle, travel to work in a cement jungle, and only get to see green living stuff when I intentionally travel to it. With my car keys, motorcycle keys, wife's car keys, house keys, a variety of office keys, and a few off keys, it makes a big enough bulge in my pocket to cause me to walk tilted over. All of the keys can be separated by snap links so if I don't need to carry my office keys or car keys on the week-end I can remove them. When I go camping or backpacking, I only carry my house and car keys. I suppose that if I lived in the county, and drove country roads to work, or worked outdoors away from civilization I'd feel differently about what I always had in my pockets, just as I'd probably choose a different EDC or two. Where we are and how we live our daily lives have a profound influence on how we plan for the future.

My original rant was NOT to dis the folks who prefer to carry these tools, nor was it a comment about their usefulness. They are all VERY useful. Just not for everyone all the time!

Keys on a carabiner with a small spy capsule holding 4 ibuprofen. That's it. Great for after a night out when I don't sleep at home and need those headache relievers...

I hate bulky keys too, that is why I never carry any car door openers.

I do carry a small firesteel, a hacksaw blade, and a nitroglycerin pill capsule filled with half a PJ cotton ball, and a can opener. Just the bare essentials to help save my butt, but not make them too bulky. It's saved my but once already.

P.S. I clip my keys to a belt loop and let them hang inside my right rear pocket next to my wallet. It's the best way I've found to carry them without bulking up my front pockets, which carry my cell phone, pocket knife, and lighter.

Ferro rod not pictured, first picture shows what pocket everything goes in:

Looks like everybody has about the same kind of stuff on their keyrings.

Keys, Hotspark ferro rod (boy scouts), hacksaw blade striker, small led light. That's it. Oh, about forgot a monkey's fist. Can't stand bulky key chains. Of course I have a bunch more stuff in my Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack I carry daily and even more in the trunk.

I like Powernoodle approach. Just because these things CAN attach to a keyring, doesn't mean they HAVE to. They can attach to each other, separate from your keys. That way it's not so uncomfortable, nor bad for the ignition of your car having 5 pounds hanging off it.

Personally, I go with the "Batbelt" approach -- knives, lights, etc get carried in appropriate pouches on my belt.

Can someone tell me where to find the larger machined tubes (like several of you have pictured above)...I've got an aluminum nitro pill bottle. However, today I noticed the actaul bottle (and tinder) was gone (unscrewed).....so I'm looking for something better.
Thanks all.
