What's so great about Spyderco?

Didn't know who Sal was, but that makes sense. I guess he's just an overall good guy who truly cares about his knives.

Other then the PM2 (which is a favorite) and dragonfly I don't care for the rest of the Spydies.

Thank you for putting the effort in to make 4 great answers. I guess I just never realized the effectiveness of the hole, or it's customizable applications. I guess personally my eye is drawn to the hole and how the blade is the same shape in that section, but when I look more at the overall knives I can begin to appreciate the knives. How does the hole work for a fast open? Is it similar to the thumb studs?

Most of the designs with that as the primary opening mechanism allow one to "flick" the knife open much like one can with thumb studs. I prefer the "middle finger flick" where I use my middle finger to kick open the knife by catching my fingertip on the Spyderhole.

Some also do the "spydie drop" where you pinch the hole between the thumb and forefinger and use the handle weight to open the knife. I don't find that one to be particularly superior to any other opening method, but to each their own.

Some add a ziptie to the spine of the hole to add a functionality similar to the Emerson Wave where the ziptie catches on the lining of the pocket as you draw the knife and opens the knife into the fully locked and open position as you take it out.

That blade shape augmentation you speak of, sometimes called the "hump", serves as a convenient place to brace one's thumb and often the "thumb ramp" has grooves cut into it for improved traction ("jimping")

He cares about the community and his business, where most companies only care about their business. Benchmade and Kai are faceless corporations by comparison, where Spyderco has direct involvement.

I have read about how great the delica is on many occasions. I look at the different types of spyderco knives whenever I go to sporting good stores or gun shows. I just could not get passed the cheap looking handles. And could not really afford the ones I thought looked good. Well, today I did it! I bought my first Spyderco knife. A Carbon fiber handle Sage. Now I realize this is not a traditional knife. But those "impulse" buys get me. You know when you have a little spare change in your pocket and a "good deal" presents itself.

Unless you try one, you will not be able to decide for yourself what is so great about them. You might not like them but without trying you are just taking advice. I was put off by the hole initially. Once I tried it the functionality became very apparent. The variety of designs/materials is far more expansive than any other manufacturer.

YouTube how to use the spydie hole. Once I got it down I can open my knife just as fast as any assisted or automatic opening... Prob faster. And it's addictive I would sit at my desk for hours opening my spydies.
I was all about Benchmade when I first started and really had no clue to make that opinion. Now that I have actually owned and played with other knifes it's a whole new world and I don't think I could live without all my spydercos. They are amazing knifes... IMO

I think the thumb hole in most Spyderco blades is easier to flick than most thumb stud blades. The older designs are great bargains The newer knives seem to be getting a little pricy. Maybe I m getting poorer!

They have a lot of options for the sub $200 price range. Quality is quite persistent as well, I can see why they are adored by many people. I do however agree with you that they mostly look the same, I've outgrown most of them since my early knife days. Still can't deny they're great knives for the money.

I carry a Delica 4 every day. I have tried other spydies and even a few other manufacturers but the Delica always wins out. Either way enjoy whatever you carry we sure have alot of choices.

they make " EDC knives " that actually get carried every day...... alot of other guys make knives that fit in a rotation.... but I'd be willing to bet there are damn few brands that get " carried as my one and only option everyday cause quite simply, it does it all " nearly as much as spydercos....

Put 100 " knife guys " in a room and empty their pockets and I'm willing to bet you find a greater than 50% spyderco carry percentage...

Spyderco makes amazing knives. The Glesser family have done more for knife hobbyists than any other brand. Sal Glesser has shown time and time again that Spyderco is a vital part of this community and that the feedback we offer is appreciated. I don't think any other knife manufacturer can claim to be as much a part of the industry as Spyderco.

There are many Spyderco knives that just don't "work" for me, a lot of them to be completely honest. The trademark HOLE and the requisite profile required to accommodate that hole don't always result in a knife that I want in my pocket. Nevertheless, I'll always make room in my knife budget for new Spydercos because I acknowledge that without this brand, our knife industry would be significantly downgraded. You can't be a Knife Knut and not love Spyderco...It's too basic to the love of anything sharp that can cut.

Go Spyderco!

Hi Lprevs,

More function than looks, more brain than eye. More performance than anything.

Tell you what. Your purchase a Delica Full flat grind model. Order a catalog from our store. Carry it and use it for a month and you don't like it, I'll buy it back from you. :)
