What's so great about Spyderco?

Sounds like Spyderco has a vey loyal and great group of followers because of the functionality and quality of the blade as well as its honest owner (who even posted in this thread previously). I would truly love to try out a Spyderco now, especially after seeing a few very interesting designs. Unfortunately money is a little tough, but I expect I'll have a chance at one soon.

Hey Iprevs and welcome!!
Check out the GAW thread, get your post count up a little and you might be able to score one to check out. I've given away 2 bad ass Enduras and a Pac Salt to members.
Can't hurt.....but once you get a Spydie in your hand you will need another job my friend!! They are addicting!

I'll have to check it out, unless the GAW thread is the pay it forward thread. I've already gotten a couple cheap knives from there, and offered up a couple of my own :)

Last thing I need is to be more addicted to knives, but I just gotta try a Spyderco out!!

Yup, it's that one. If you've paid it forward there is no reason you couldn't claim another.
I'll dig through what I have left to go up on the block and will give you first dibs if it's a Spydie.

Such generosity. Unfortunately one of the two knives I offered (a SAK) was never taken, so I'll be putting up another post for it shortly.

I usually buy customs, but I do own two spydercos. I do have to say they often look similar, which is fine with me. What I do care about is quality, and I think they are pretty well made. I will definitely give them a thumbs up for all the different types of steels they work with, and more Importantly having a good heat treat with those steels.

There are lots of great knife companies now though, so people are not very limited when it comes to knives! Which is awesome, but really a pain when you got the money, and have to choose!

Just my humble opinion.

I used to really thing Spyderco was the one of the best knives on the planet for the money....

Since the $ has gone through the roof on most of their newer models, I am not so sure anymore.

Still think think that their "classic" knives are top notch for what you pay though, but when every new folder is $300-$400 there are other options I prefer to explore at that price.

BM falls into this exact same category.

I've really fallen in love with Spydies and appreciated the company this last year, after experiencing, using, handling, breaking, replacing, and discussing Spyderco knives.

What makes them great? For me, in short:

A. The designs: Unique shapes, blades, purpose-designed tools and knives, some of them very specialised and the best at thair job in the entire industry

B. The steels: Nobody else offers H1 steel in such variety, or tests so many new materials in their offerings, or makes sprints of your favorite knife in a different steel so you can have it and try how it changes what you so much liked

C. The ergos: Unbeatable, spot on...however you call it, they are incredible to handle and use. Their handles (fixed and folder) adapt to you rhand and are made out with the characteristics and intended use in mind

D. The company: Sal comments on many threads, answers your wuestions, backs up his customers and products, and even asks us for needs, wishes and designs we have in mind to implement changes, improve or even create from scrap their folders (look at the Wharncliffe delica, or the stabby Jumpmaster 2, or the new Fish Hunter). They just listen

E. The value: Compared to all others, they just offer a bang-for-the-buck ratio in many, or most of their offerings that is only seen on particular models (Griptillian, RAT, Utilitac, Dozier...) from other brands, so they just are worth looking whatever you knife needs and budget are. They0ve been here, and have so many followers for a reason

So give them a try, and believe what everybody warns you about, you'll get hooked! They've eaten my whole budget every month this year, but I honestly believe it's for good. Spydercos made me sell most of my collection, and it doesn't seem to be stopping... :D

The great this about them is the big thumb ramp on the delica. They're all ugly as hell to me but the delica is a great little edc knife

I have the Delica, PM2 and Sage 2. All are excellent knives. The PM2 probably sees more time in my pocket than any other locking folder.

They go great with Seecamps.:D My wife thinks their logo looks like a tick but I'm lovin' the PM-2. Great knife.

I don't own any. I just don't really like the look of them. That thumbhole just doesn't do it for me. I much more prefer a stud or flipper.
I know they are very popular though and great quality.

Use a Spyderco for a while and you will find the hole far superior to a thumbstud.

I agree with this, every new Spyderco is at least $200+.

In my opinion, Spyderco is the best high volume (Think Benchmade, KAI, Etc..) knife producer out there at the moment. They offer something for everyone, and are always breaking new ground.

Want a folding prybar?- Tuff
Want a slicer?- Tons of options
Want the latest steel?- Yep...
Want a flipper?- They've got you covered
Integral frame?- They've got that too

Nobody offers as much diversity to the market as Spydie, and no maker interacts with the community as much as Sal.

You know, it's funny; I prefer their classic models. Seems like the taichung made models are all about trendyness. Flippers and tactical, carbon fiber, titanium framelocks, etc. I have four spydies, and between them, they can handle any task a folder is made for. Dragonfly 2 zdp-189, pm2, manix 2 cts-xhp sprint, Gayle Bradley. All my other knives are tertiary. One of my other brand knives or two will be going on the block soon, fsot.

To sum up, Spyderco's classic models are all you need for everyday use. The manix 2 and pm2 are the pinnacle of ergonomics IMHO.

Don't forget:

Want a rust proof knife? Got lots of options. Some are even new and cost far less than $200.
