What's so great about Spyderco?

I've appreciated nicer knives for less than a year.I loved ZT knives and wanted one.I got on blade forums and ZT asked to have there there product section removed.I never bought one for this reason.Spyderco is ran by knife people not money people and they stand up under criticism like prices and try to explain why things cost what they do this is big to me.Plus I was just using my Blurple PM2 to tie up my Tomatoes and I was thinking how good this knife works for me.

Easily the coolest thing I read all day on bf. Sal and Eric come across as great people and the knives speak for themselves.

You know, I used to think the exact same thing about Spyderco, but I just received my Southard today (through the Exchange, no less!) and I'm absolutely blown away by the fit and finish of this "Made in Taiwan" knife. I scoffed at Spyderco before, but never again!

Hi Lprevs,

More function than looks, more brain than eye. More performance than anything.

Tell you what. Your purchase a Delica Full flat grind model. Order a catalog from our store. Carry it and use it for a month and you don't like it, I'll buy it back from you. :)

The legend himself!!!!!!!

Thanks for taking the time to read and make the offer!! Money is pretty tight at the moment, but when the owner himself talks to you, you just gotta try and make an exception. Looks like a great knife, will tell you if I can order it tomorrow!

Spyderco knives are designed first and foremost for function, not for looks, as Sal has already stated in this thread. The logical consequence of this is that they can only be fairly evaluated by holding and using them. There is no requirement that anyone own or love Spyderco designs. People should buy what they like; there is no "wrong" in personal taste. However, anyone interested in true cutting performance owes it to themselves to get a Spyderco knife and try it out. A flat ground Delica is the perfect gateway knife.

Spyderco PM2 is one of the most functional blades I've used.
Blade shape was perfect for edc; the lock was easy to open/close one handed and the many variations of it make it collectible.
Before I sold all my gear I had 6 different ones and loved them all :)

Well I can flick my PM2 open with the hole or dropping the compression lock, Spydies are really good slicers. I have the three I like the most: PM2, Military and a Manix.

He cares about the community and his business, where most companies only care about their business. Benchmade and Kai are faceless corporations by comparison, where Spyderco has direct involvement.

Exactly the reason my knife drawer is getting a lot more holes in it!:)

Like it is stated above, it is all about ergonomics with Spyderco. Overall their ergos are the best in the industry. You owe it to yourself to own a Spyderco at least once in your life. Try one and carry it as your main knife for at least two months. Then you will start to understand.

My problem with most of their knives(at least the few I tried) is how much room they take up in my pocket. I used to hate them and a good firefighter friend of mine thought they were the cat's meow. Then I tried the Tanacious model. Loved it but it did not fit my lifestyle. Plus, I wanted a little better blade steel. If they ever offer a US made Tenacious with better blade steel, I am all over it.

Iprevs - I used to look at that weird blade shape and big hole and never considered Spyderco. I wrote them off as weird and gimmicky because I didn't know any better. I then found a $1 crap knife at a Dollar Tree that is a knockoff of the Delica kinda. I really wanted the steel hunk of the blade to practice with a grinding wheel at work, but after playing with the thing for a couple days opening boxes and stuff, I started seeing the handle shape, blade shape, and back lock positioning all as very useful. I appreciate functionality and simplicity. I assumed the real deal would be exponentially better. Watch reviews bro. I saw a few and decided the Endura FFG was decent looking. The more I learned, the sexier it looked. Once you understand, it grows on you! I'm hoping to have that Endura 4 soon :)

Also, I didn't buy the knockoff for any reason but to grind the blade steel away. It was supposed to be a scrap thing that ended up opening my mind to the real Spyderco. Now I can't decide how many to save up for!

That's one thing that interests me in spyderco, but I have to add that while they weren't designed for looks I happen to think that the delica and ladybug are certainly not ugly. just like glocks they're purely utilitarian design, but actually look good. ( they're not 1911's and buck 110's, but they're certainly not tokarevs or AK bayonets either )

I agree. Using the knife opens one's eyes to the unconventional beauty it manifests. This is similar to the way that we see the beauty in a dear friend because of the love we feel for them. Affection changes our perceptions about appearance.

....Just to add my .2, on Spydercos.
To me. the models are all unique, despite having the trademark, (& fully funtional) "SpydieHole"
From the blade designed shapes, Length, grinds, Plain edge, combo-edge, or fully serratted,
different steels incorporated, different handle materials used, as well as color options...
Also recognized use specific designs.
From the newest of the new, to the originals & discontinued pieces...:thumbup: BTB

Spyderco is about function over form. IMHO they are the most ergonomic knives out there. For those like me with arthritis, the hole is much easier to use than a thumb stud.

Hmm. What about other "Made in Taiwan knives"?

Some of their knives are great users but I think that what makes them so popular is fame - they're famous because they're so long in the business - many inventions and cooperations, and because all movies and tv series where main bad/good guy has some Spyderco. People want to buy knife from company which is famous and trendy.

The Spyderco knives I have are great tools. Solid, reliable, ergonomic performers.

Looks are subjective and are last on my list when it comes to my knife purchases.

It also helps that Mr Glesser is a stand up guy, listens to his customers, and inter-acts with us.

I work hard for my paycheck,my gun/knife/ammo funds are limited.
I don't mind if some of it ends up in Sal Glesser's pocket. Even if it is only .0001 cents on the dollar.

What's so great about Spyderco?

The people.

Head on over to the Spyderco forum (either on Bladeforums or Spyderco's own forum) and you will see many responses from the founder of the company Sal Glesser himself.

Not only responses, but help also. Sal has stepped into threads of people complaining about their Spydie's quality. He ALWAYS personally gets involved and squares people away......even when they are 100% wrong.
Sal and company have tons of integrity.......and the knives cut stuff real good too!!
