What's so special about the Busses?

I have about thirty Busses, ten Rats, and two Dogs. Better than anything on the planet? No. But, great knives, can't beat warranty, easy to deal with company. If anything goes wrong, Jerry makes it right. Even when (my opinion) the knucklehead behind the knife is the problem. Lots of hype and hoopla, absolutely. Whenever Spyderco or BM or Kershaw introduces a new steel, its the end all be all. Thats the knife world. The only thing I take issue with Busse over is width. Lots of Busse guys want a blade that is thicker than anything I could possibly use. One of my faves is a Buffalo Soldier that was thin enough to begin with and came with a full height grind. I personally would prefer more of that. I like to cut and thinner cuts better for me.

I'm with you here. I have some of the fat blades, but especially in the smaller knives, I gravitate toward the thinner ones. Fat can be too fat. There's a knife called the Off Duty which is an Active Duty that is something like 3/8" thick. Besides holding down a railroad track, what in the heck are you going to do with that thing? They command a premium price, but more because of rarity and collectibility than utility. Different strokes for different folks. Some of the more recent Active Duties and Leaner Meaners have been nice and thin though.

I'm not as keen on the really fat choppers myself. They tend to bind more, whereas the thinner blades and edges do better at "biting" without sticking. I have lots of choppers, but among the Busses, the old-style Straight Handled Battle Mistress is a nice chopper. My favorite though is the Fusion Battle Mistress Special Edition, pictured above with the yellow leaves in the background. With the saber grind, it chops very nicely. I used it recently to limb out a 30-foot Eastern Hemlock that I took down in my back yard. Fun knife.

I saw the pics of that. It's one of the reasons I've started considering a Fusion Battle Mistress. Although I'll probably go with a CG and strip it. I just think it will be too much blade for me, but I won't know until I try. My Heavy Heart was about perfect for a chopping knife for me, and handled rocks and chunks of metal hidden in brush, while I cleared with it. But, my SFNO is perfect for shelter and fire craft.

Not good for business and potential customers when you start taking sides. I would think that a smart businessman would remain neutral.

The great and terrible protector of all that is business has spoken, you know all, see all. Now, I happen to like pushrod V twins, overhead cam V twins dont float my boat so yea I take the side of the push rods. If that isnt smart business, then I guess I am just a dumb businessman. And yup, theres a modified iron head Sportster sitting in my garage, so I practice what I preach. :p

99.5 % of my business is Busse, so I am a little loyal to my "side", I know who butters my bread, and you evidently dont, so please dont tell me how to express myself or what scooter I should ride. :D

Thank you, thank you very much, Elvis has left the building, and gone back home.

Aww... how sweet of you to be so concerned for his business :D . He hasn't badmouthed anyone else's knives so the only business he's likely to lose is from those who are so rabidly anti-Busse they can't bring themselves to deal with anyone who likes them. I doubt he had any of their business before and I'd imagine he's fine with that.

I couldnt have said it better myself, thank you.

Given the pictures of Leatherman's workmanship which are posted on these forums almost daily I'd say he's in no danger of losing customers. I've personally been so impressed with the pictures of his work that my next fixed blade purchase will be going to him for a sheath. He seems like a stand-up guy and regardless of his line of business he's entitled to an opinion just like everyone else here.

lol you are about to get 350 responses lmao....do a search for busse comparison or something along those lines...there are a pile of threads with virtually the same question. I put off buying one for two years then I held one...now I have several

Closing in on the target............:D

In quickly reading your thread, I thought you had told another member that he had issues. I did not realize you were kidding and referring to something other than the topic at hand and for that I apologize. I also didn't realize you only did Busse work, I thought you did custom sheath work for any brand.

The more talk about Busse products, the more 'allure' is created. As mentioned before, it is a marketing strategy which works well. I suspect that Jerry will be taking yet another cruise to Cozumel.

It's all good foxyrick. It just rubbed brianNH the wrong way because I challenged him on the leatherman comment, and he decided to get all pissy. Some folks have thin skin. As for my life offline, he need not worry his pretty little head about me. Last weekend, I was saltwater kayak fishing off the coast of South Carolina...

Just had to pop in and say nice fishing setup. Looks like a 3500 shimano baitrunner on one rod and a 5600 c4 abu garcia.

Thanks. A good eye, and really close on the IDs. The 3500 is spot on, but I believe the abu garcia in the pic is a 6500 C3. I do have a 6600 C4, but I don't think I used it the entire day. It was in my crate as a back-up rig though. If I'm not mistaken, the C3's have the release button on the side, whereas the C4's have the thumb bar release?

Yea, sometimes my dry sense of humor is a little too dry. :o Thats why I tried to stay away from the knife comments and focus on his attempt at humor with the V twin comment. :)

No apology needed bro, I have a thick skin, that cow hide is wonderous for flack applications. ;) Being a Busse collector/user since 2000, I have developed quite the vocabulary for defense or offense. I very much appreciate your post though, it shows a lot of character. A huge amount of respect from me bro. :D

I dont specialize in Busse, Busse found me. I wont turn away work as Tedwca stated I do custom work. It just doesnt come my way as often. One of my specialities is trying to make it to where the customer doesnt have to send his blade in for work. Busse offers me that opportunity in that he produces his blades with very little variance in the dimentions. Here lately, with the introduction of the Fusion line (did I say lately????) I have nearly gone broke at times trying to get examples of what is offered at the time so I dont have to ask for the blade to be sent in. This helps me as I am not responsible for someones baby, and they dont have to worry about the shipper losing their baby.

Whew! long winded! Its my passion, leatherwork. :D

Hey bro! Long time no write! :D I still have that one, and yep its been beaten quite a bit since. Its the best chopper I have bar none.

I also still have that older Fehrman First Strike that I got in the same time span. And it still has that godawful thick edge, lol! I just keep polishing it and it cuts like a razor.

Hey brother, glad its still working for ya my friend, sorry for the no write in so long, been as busy as a one armed wallpaper hanger, that Steel Heart in
A2 is a beast, sharp and STRONG. By far my favorite of the Busse blades, im glad you use that beast, it was meant to be, and to this day im glad you got it buddy.

Yeah those Fehrmans, those thick edges LMAO, I still have my FJ and its still wicked sharp, like you said, a little polish and presto sharp as one would need and then some....Might be contacting you soon, my Fehrman needs some new clothes.

Glad all is well my friend.

A SPORTER ?!?!!

Everyone KNOWS the only REAL Harley is the Knucklehead! LOL

My old one, when I was young and dumb and didn't break quite so easily, was a '62 Pan in a '48 frame that had been 'somewhat' modified.

Slow, loud and proud.

Maybe so. But your cylinder angles are half as wide as they should be and mounted 90 degrees the wrong way....

Hey guys,

Would like to ask where can I get myself a Busse? Their website doesn't seem to have a wide range.

www.bussecompanystore.com has game wardens and perhaps badgers currently.

jerry's production protocols limit the number of knives produced, as well as the models. generally, once a model's production has ceased, only a few special releases will show up.

your best bet is to try the exchange.

Hey guys,

Would like to ask where can I get myself a Busse? Their website doesn't seem to have a wide range.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, the Busse web site is mostly a placeholder.

In addition to the above mentioned Company Store you might want to watch their forum here, Jerry often runs sale threads there. If you try to reach this site on a Friday night and get a 404 error it may well be a Busse sale night. His crowd is big enough to DOS Bladeforums.

Good luck with it though. The last time I got in on one I received a confirmation that I'd scored a blade, but it never showed up. You might want to integrate yourself into the culture first, as that may increase your chance of success.

Citori, if you received an email confirmation on an Extravaganzaaaa, the blade should eventually show up, provided you arranged for payment. I waited quite a while to recieve a SFNO (Special Forces Natural Outlaw) in the Ganzaaaa before last. It did come though.

Just to check, did you call in and arrange payment as requested? That's the usual protocol requested in the confirmation email. If you did arrange payment and the knife hasn't shown up, call the Busse shop. The crew there will let you know about status.

I don't think that simply being in any "in-crowd" has much to do with success. However, the people who regularly buy Busses are more serious about the Extravaganzaaaas, and so they do score knives with regularity due to their efforts.
