What's special about the Hi-Jinx

Does anyone know anything about the rust resistance of the sleipner? I know it's comparable to D2, but I don't have much experience with D2 so I don't know what to expect. I ask because I just got my hi-jinx and I'm curious! Thanks👍

The use of the word collusion is ignorant of the process at best, and insulting at the worst. It doesn't work that way.

The designers at CRKT are certainly varied and accomplished. CRKT can no doubt do higher end product, and hopefully, after the Hi Jinx, it is something that they will consider carefully!

I specifically stated that it's not a transparent process, and I admit to being completely ignorant about the process. That being said, it certainly seems that it would be possible for people to secretly cooperate to swing the outcome of this vote. Collusion may have a negative connotation, but I have yet to see someone explain the process in a way that demonstrates the strong disincentives for "cooperation".

I am careful to say that I think it is possible for these issues to arise because no one has explained quite exactly how the process works and how it is safeguarded against these issues.

You have clearly been around the community far longer than I have, please save me from my ignorance. I'm all ears :)

Each booth holder gets a vote. The individual parties tasked with that vote pretty much go to the "island" where the knives are displayed and vote.

The show organizers make an announcement that the polls are closing, and pretty much everyone makes a rush to get in the ballot in about 10 minutes or so.

It's more a matter of preference on the part of the voter than it is "vote for me and I will vote for you".....I know that may sound suspect but it is the truth. There are so many varied booth holders that somehow politicking for a ballot stuff would take more time than the booth holders have. Blade is organized chaos....it's hard enough to just make dinner plans or get a bathroom break, let alone get disparate elements coordinated to "stuff" the ballots.

Was there also collusion because ZT won the award three years in a row?

To try to coordinate a Blade Show voting collusion will be like turning a 100 monkeys into a choir to sing your national anthem

Like to add that this isn't CRKT's first ti/higher end knife. They have been around for a while now, and the offshore production shouldn't offend many here as Spyderco and KAI has the bulk of their product made overseas as well.

It isn't that it was offshore production, but just as Apple has it's own OEM partners (Foxconn) which it works with to ensure high quality standards, so does CRKT as evidenced by their recent improvements. They all do it, and part of a company's reputation for quality comes from how well they manage it.

The problem is that this award winning knife is not produced by their usual network, but by another award winning company. Unless they're going to turn to Lionsteel for production of a portion of their line, it isn't really a relevant knife reputation wise.

I was interested in the knife, before the Blade Show award. I have CRKT's Ken Onion Skinner, and that has a very similar overall shape.

I was actually looking for "seconds" on the one that Cigarrodog picked up. He beat me by 30 minutes. :D

After missing out on that one, I found the online store still selling them at $300, and was happy to pay it.

Then I started reading this thread. I started to get worried. After my knife arrived, I was again, happy.

It really is a great knife. Ken Onion's design is superb, as stated above. Compared to other "Knife of the year" winners (I own 5 others), it stacks up very nicely. In the past, it hasn't always been a "high end" knife that wins. Many have been between $100-200 in price, or lower, including the 2004 CRKT Van Hoy Snap-lock!

My Hi Jinx is essentially perfect. It is outstanding in quality, materials, and design. (my opinion, of course) The price may be high for a knife that would be a regular production piece, but being a limited, I have no problem paying the premium. As a production piece, I would agree with the OP, that $250 would be closer to the expected value. That is still no slouch of a knife.

I plan to carry mine, as I have no safe queens, so resale is of no importance to me.

A company should be judged by the products they put their name on, as they take the initiative to find the designer, pay for the development and production, and handle all marketing and customer service. When all those things come together so well, like they did on this knife, I think that speaks volumes as to what CRKT can accomplish.

Just got mine in today. It flips very smoothly, but it does have a slightly sticky lock. The blade grind is the best I've seen and I have a CRK.

I do very much agree with a lot of the guys who have weighed in here...I hope CRKT kinda starts to push a little nicer knives out in the near future. I personally have owned many of their knives. I still edc a ripple 2 all the time and love it. I just hope they dont get too over zealous and price them out of the "regular guys" Price range..

There's certainly one thing you can't complain about when it comes to CRKT, and that's the stable of designers they have at their disposal. CRKT just needs to take greater advantage of them is all.

Greater advantage of the designers?

From what I can see, the only thing that CRKT needs to do is improve their choices of steel and heat treatment.

I do have to admit I like what Kershaw has done by creating their ZT branch and feel that CRKT could improve their image by simular business practices.

It's pretty crazy how all mention of this knife fell off after this thread died down. You don't see people suggesting them in the high end folder threads, you don't see pics of them in the EDC pics threads, nada. After this knife won the award at Blade, it just kinda died off.

Folks in the knife industry really voted for this thing? My taste must not be in line with theirs. That's a weird thing to say since voters are knifemakers and company reps who eat/live/breathe knives. There was really good competition too IMO, maybe they wanted to give it to someone different.

Honestly, it kind of makes sense to me because it fell off just about as quickly as it popped up!

Well, there weren't many made to begin with, and a large portion of those undoubtedly ended up in safes instead of pockets. Mine is in my rotation, along with a bunch of others. :)

That is nice to hear. The shirts at CRKT might like to recieve some feed back from you and others that purchased the knife.

When I first saw pictures, I did not like the knife at all. I guess it is the grips, because I love the blade shape. How is it to carry?

I carry mine as well and have absolutely no complaints. Granted, it doesn't get carried as often as my favorite 3 (Manix LW S110V, 940-1, ZT0770CF), but that is only because the Hi-Jinx is built like a tank and I prefer to carry a smaller/slimmer/lighter knives for EDC. Same thing can be said for most of my ZTs as well. My Hi-Jinx has performed well when used, is comfortable to grip (something that I was worried about before I actually got it in hand) and is a decent slicer. Flips as well as my 0801s which is saying an awful lot as the 0801s are great flippers.
