I am looking to get a good flipper to play with and use as my EDC. What is the best deal for one that the cost vs rewards fits (Steel used, size, blade style, scale material, etc.) ?? I am new to them so not exactly sure what I should look for or what to avoid! :D

Some specs and notables that I am considering:

* No blades with big recurves as I couldnt sharpen them!
* Easy to maintain edge.
* Blade size - something between 3 and 3.5 inches.
* Easy flipping ability.
* Would like to be able to deep pocket carry.
* etc.

I dont want a $1000 one cause I cant afford it but dont want a $10 one either!

Thanks.

If you want manual flippers I would say go for a Kershaw Skyline or a R.A.M. if you can find one. If you don't mind spending around $200 I would say get a ZT 0560.

$10-$1000 is a pretty large range lol

I would second the Ripple for under $100. IKBS, frame lock, flipper and a decent steel.

Over $100 and a little larger, I would say ZT has some nice offerings

Closer to $200 I would say Southard no doubt

zt801? I don't even like ZT or flippers and I'm hooked on this thing... seriously :cool:

Get a different pocket clip though :)

Skyline in sandvik or buck vantage pro in s30 i would suggest a zt but they have some recurve to most of their blades. At about $130 the AG Russell Ti framelock is kinda nifty and the agrussell guarantee is awesome.

I stand corrected so for double the AG Russell there is the zt 550 and 560 series but I can't attest to how well they flip. If I had that put aside for a knife I would order o e of those zt's sight unseen!

Kershaw DLC JYD fits the bill besides the easy to maintain edge part. (The cutting edge is D2).

The blade length is a hair over 3.5, it's a dream to flip, but it rides in the pocket a little high. Nothing too bad though.

Favorite production flipper: Spyderco Southard (~$225)
Favorite too-thick, too-heavy, but so much fun flipper: ZT 0801 (~$190)
Favorite cheap flipper: Kershaw Chill (~$20)

The 801 such a great knife I would recommend it 24/7 it wins in every category. If you are on a budget and a small flipper the ripple is an ok option

Thanks for the input everyone!

I guess I should mention that the price I will buy at depends on what sells in my sales thread! LOL I am figuring around the $200 mark should get me a sweet one without breaking the bank!

Arguably, the best production flipper, the Spyderco Southard gives a lot of value. It's super light (4.1 ounces) with the premium CTS-204P (similar to M390). Invest in a CF scale in place of the "ugly" brown G10 for looks plus makes it even lighter.

Second choice goes to Zero Tolerance. Kind of heavy at 5.8 ounces.

Can't go wrong with Kershaw or Zero Tolerance. Check out kershawguy.com for some good deals on blemish models.

My first flipper knife was a CRKT M16. Great knife. I have an M21 too which is basically the same but with a drop point blade.

I'm not big on flippers but I won't push the issue- I do however love my kershaw shallot and my wife's CRKT Rippple frame lock is fun to play with (tho its not my style). I wish CRKT would make a knife that was a Ripple/Eros inbetween with a better (and reversible) pocket clip. Another manual flipper I do like is the kershaw skyline. (If you can't tell the ones I like are the ones with smaller, non-protruding flippers)

I'd also have a look at an ELMAX ZT, if you don't mind the weight you can not go wrong there (I highly recommend a Hinderer design so you get a straight blade-no recurve) and of course the spyderco flippers are great knives too.

The Kershaw Knockout meets all of your specs. It has 14c28n steel which sharpens very nice and easily. Blade is 3.25" and flips extremely smooth and quick. To top it off it also has a deep carry clip.

@ Blade-fiend. I will check that one out.

Hey all, what your thoughts on the ZT 0566? I like it as it is just a little smaller than the 0560! Anyone have one? Good or bad comments?

I love this knife as much as my knives that cost five times more money.
