What's the biggest deal killer for you?

no paint on blades
no handle shorter than ~4"
relatively lightweight, around 4-5 oz max
no wide blades -- Emerson Commander, Blur also felt a little wide
bad sheath or the overall carry system

Greater than 3.5 inch blade
Less than 4 inch handle
Finger choil
Fixed blades that don't come with a sheath. This one bugs me so much.

If it has Mantis, Medford, Dark OP's, or Direware written on the box it comes in.

Oh and if it doesn't have a blade at all.

Anything else Ill probably at least take a look at:D

Must be able to be carried and opened left handed.
No black coated blades.
No serrations.
No tanto.
Less than 6oz.
No longer than 3.75" blade

Tip up only it's my biggest pet peeve. I get that some people have different preferences, but what not drill every knife for both left and right hand carry, tip up and to down? Seems like a win/win for not much effort.

In another thread, a person was very upset that Spyderco was now drilling four clip positions on the stainless steel handle Police.
It really, really bugged him...he just couldn't stand how it looked.

You can't please everyone. :D

Made in China
Partial serrations on main edge. They could be acceptable on a dagger/the spine.
Anything with less quality than a PM2
Anything above about $ 2,000
Art/Fantasy knives
Cheap steel
Scandi grind
Duplex grind
Wharncliffes
Karambits
Friction folders. Although I like some designs with them, I probably won't use one.
I think I am finished with liner locks.
Frame locks with a steel insert added, I think it's unnecessary
Wave feature
Flippers that don't work well
I usually pass on black G-10 handles (too boring)
A fixed blade with a crappy sheath
I generally don't prefer tip down carry
Most automatic knives
Most assisted openers
Companies that I have experienced poor customer service/warranty issues with
I generally won't buy a beat up or user knife
Most anything that has been modified or "pimped"
Knock-offs, copies, fakes, ripped off designs etc.
While I think Damascus can be beautiful I probably won't use it.
Bead blasted blades or pocket clips (i generally prefer stonewashed)
Lanyards (fobs) with a big weighty bead attached
Para cord wrapped handles
Folders with a blade less than about 3"
Folders with a blade longer than about 4.5"
Fixed blades with out a full tang
Most traditionals
Most knives with multiple blades (saks and multi-tools excluded from this)
Simulated hamon or anything like that
Lockbacks
Balisongs
A nail nick being the only method for opening
A pivot that is too small for the blade to be sturdy
Gut hooks
Bolster locks
Excessive holes or fullers on the knife
Lever locks
If the blade is shaped like a cleaver
Handles made from animal horns
Deep carry pocket clips
FRN/polymer/plastic type handle material
Grip tape inserts
Knives that you can't get a full 4 finger grip on
Too much writing or a giant makers mark covering most of the blade
Neck knives, credit card knives, ridiculously expensive knucks or bottle opener/pry tools

That's about most of it.
These are generalized and there is always an exception to most every rule.

No knife for you!

It must be very economical collecting knives though...all 3 on the planet that meet your requirements. :D

Please do not infer that we are distasteful or unaware of the rest of the world.
I didn't thank you very much. (But I'm no native speaker, so maybe my dyslectic non-native head wrote something wrongly...)

Hey at least he's less picky than asdf12345

Damn, I just looked...and it appears you are correct. :D
Oh well, more knives for me...I just got a CRKT No Bother in the mail today.
Made in China, with thick stock and a blackwash finish...a bunch of folks in this thread wouldn't want one. ;)

But I tested it out on some wood I brought from last week's woods outing, and it does feather sticks just fine.
Cuts paracord, paper and padded envelopes easily as well; it should make a nice neck knife.

And only $35, so I'm pretty pleased all around. :)
I bought a second one for part of my wife's upcoming birthday present too...she'd kill me if a knife was the entire present (probably stab me with my own knife :D), but I think she'll like it in conjunction with gold.

Sounds great stabby, I'm sure she'll love it:thumbup:

But the better option would be getting either a knife with gold on it, or gold jewelry with a folding blade:D

you want the Americans to get less money so you can buy our stuff?
That is a fallacy. Nowhere did I state that. I have no problem with paying 40 USD international shipping costs. (One of the many reasons why I like eBay: you can search on the lowest shipping costs; plenty of eBay Shops that ship international for 15 USD or even less.)

Remember, in a proper deal, the item shipped is a risk the seller takes wholly on his or her self.
Of course. I never assumed nor state nor experienced otherwise.

I've bought and sold a lot of stuff and the only time I have lost anything was when it left this country's boarders.
I'm sorry for you. 99% of my knives come from overseas: never experienced any problem. Personally it would be very interesting to see hard numbers/stats about "lost" (stolen, whatever) packages with continental shipping compared to the percentage of "lost" packages with international shipping. I dare to bet that more stuff gets lost/stolen by USPS personal within the US than with international shipping, but that is just an assumption.

Oh, and ranting about how bad we American's are
A fallacy again. You are utterly and blatantly generalizing. I did not. Actually, in general I love Americans (the non-Christian-Taliban ones) as I love freedom and capitalism. (Luckily I found an online US friend through Youtube who is willing to ship me anything I want in a flat rate box <15 USD and even undervalue it :p)

I need to be able to open and close the knife with one hand.
Like most, I also don't buy knives with serrations, coatings, tanto blades.
Interesting how many on the forum share those preferences.

I wonder how many people here have a serrated tanto at home but claim not to in order to fit in with the prevailing (posted) opinion. :p

Say what you want about them but serrated tantos get the job done every time. You can use them to cut almost anything, without thinking or caring. I think they look kind of ugly but they are probably the most useful and get the most use unless you have a very specific application where a curved blade does better.

Pretty soon manufacturers will be drilling clip screw holes in the middle of the scales.
