Whats the deal with spyderco knives?

Their ugly Spyderholes make the knives incredibly easy and FAST to open one-handed. I own Emersons and Benchmades but I always carry my Spyderco Endura when I'm out trolling around Lowell. Regarding serrations: some people (fishermen, EMTs, etc) might actually prefer/need them, and Spyderco's are among the best cutting serrations made.

I am genuinely wondering the same thing actually and was considering starting a thread but decided not to because of the flame posts I'd probably receive.

Why are Spydercos so expensive?

and would a titanium blade or SV30 steel be better?

You would not get flamed if you phrased your question reasonably. ;)

Different strokes buddy. I don't get the whole Emerson wave thing but many do and I'm sure they're right , not me and my inexperienced opinion on the matter, which seems similar to yours on Spyderco. Rest assured that whether or not you like them, they're awesome and you're missing out.

Not trolling. Im honestly interested as to why these are so popular. I bought one on a whim and gave it to a buddy after 3 days. Ergonomics were crap and it was just ugly. To each his/her own I guess.

There's a reason Ti isn't used for blades often. Doesn't take or hold a great edge being the main one. I'd rather have a Ti frame and lock, with a CPMS30V blade ;)

Which Spyderco did you buy? Did you handle a variety of them first? Some work well for large hands, some for small hands, so before you trash the "crap" ergos, try holding more than one.

As for serrations, I personally prefer a plain edge, but I do own two Spyyderco Rescue models specifically for the serrations, as well as one partially serrated Endura.

As for looks, I personally don't find that many knives to be that ugly. I won't buy an ugly car, though, even if it is fun.

I don't own a Spyderco and also wondered why so many love them, it might be my next buy, I hear a lot of good stuff about them.

I'm another convert who used to think they were ugly, and associated the SpyderHole with cheap Chinese junk. On a whim, I picked up a Delica4 after reading a little here regarding how much people loved them, and it's been all down hill since then. I've got a few PM2s, a Gayle Bradley, couple Stretches, Pacific Salt, Salt 1 SE, Enduras, etc. A few will probably get sold or traded (they can't ALL fit me like a glove!), but I'm sold on Spyderco, and recommend them regularly now.

As for their serrations. The Salt 1 is the only fully serrated blade I own, and it's SHARP. I used to think that serrations were more for tearing through things, rather than cutting through them. Boy was I wrong! If they're kind of dull, sure, they'll still tear and chew through fabric OK enough to get the job done (ie., cutting a seat belt or something), but when they're sharp, they cut just as well as anything else. I got the Salt 1 as a small dive knife, and I think the serrations will feel right at home working under water. :)

When I get a new camera, I can show you a vast array of different designs.

There's lots of others, but if you think those ones look the same, then you need glasses.

Spyderco owns your face. Seriously. If you don't get Spyderco, you are so a total noob.

What he said ^^^^

Now thats a decent looking spidey. Whats the steel? hows the lockup?

Steel is printed on the base of the blade (CPM-M4), and the lock up is bank vault solid on mine. It was another Spydie that was talked up big, and I managed to get a decent deal on it. Due to it's looks, it makes a fantastic gentleman's folder (I wear mine to church all the time), yet it's as tough as anything else. HIGHLY recommended, IMO.

LOL.....my thoughts exactly.

Horrendous serrations? They have the best in the business.
Ergonomics were crap? Seriously.....you came to that conclusion from only owning/handling one Spyderco knife? C'mon....
Only after three days, you chose to give the knife away? Spyderco knives may be 'ugly' at first, but the beauty comes to light the more that you use them.

After a little use/time, you will come to understand why Spyderco knives have the following that they do.
