Whats the deal with spyderco knives?

Not trolling. Im honestly interested as to why these are so popular. I bought one on a whim and gave it to a buddy after 3 days. Ergonomics were crap and it was just ugly. To each his/her own I guess.

Where does one find these friends that just give away nice knives for free after a few days?

Whoa??? Fanboy here...At first, I too disliked the blade shape, holes, serrations.
But one day I picked up a Military & after months of use - I finally understood, it's the ergonomics.
No one can change how you feel about a design & you have your opinion... but like my mother & others have always said - "If you can't say something nice about a subject...":mad::mad:

Spyderco knives may be 'ugly' at first, but the beauty comes to light the more that you use them.

After a little use/time, you will come to understand why Spyderco knives have the following that they do.

MFShirley, do you shoot at all? If you're familiar with the Glock, think of Spyderco as the Glock of knives. They're REAL beauty is in how tough they are, and generally how light and reasonably priced they are. They use high end polymers for their handles, which offer a reduced cost, ease of manufacture, and phenomenal grip. The plus? They also make higher-end knives, such as the Gayle Bradley. Look around, try a few different models. I think you'll find that they're functionally beautiful, and that they'll grow on you.

Man...I didnt think people would get so offended..kinda funny tho.

It's not a matter of being offended. It's the matter of an individual wanting to find out more information about certain knives but starting out with an antagonistic approach in their first post....that kind of behavior isn't given a very warm welcome here.

Just fyi...

Some men prefer a hole others prefer a stud. ;) Buy a PM2 and I would be surprised if you don't like it.

Don't do it !!!! I picked up ONE Para II, Now I have way too many!!!! Right now,I'm jone'n for the soon to be released already sold out sprint in green.
lol

I see what you mean. It was kinda di%#ish the way I came out. Im just very blunt and my filter doesnt always work. Gets me in trouble sometimes lol.

I agree they're garish. I own two, a delica something or other and a para military. They're utilitarian and will last forever, but I've made the switch to classic carbon folders for EDC because they look nice and feel classy.

I agree with the op. I know the materials are great, but I don't like the look or ergonomics in MY hand. HOWEVER after handling an endura and sage I can definately see why they have such a grand following. And that being said I still want a para2 :D.

To the op. Reword your posts into more of an opinion and people will be more willing to share their opinions. Instead of harping on you for trolling

They do look strange. Look at the Dodo. But function over form right? And part of the strange looks means that their knives are a lot more varied, rather than the same straight handle, finger grooves, and such. Instead, you have knives that use a variety of shapes to fulfill a particular need. And their knives have great value IMO. VG-10 for $50 in the Endura is pretty good. Also, not all of them have the "triangular blade." Try the Civilian, or the Cricket, Balance, Dodo, Massad Ayoob, P'kal, and a myriad of others.

They are popular because they just plain work. As Sal, the owner of Spyderco says, "they are designed in the dark". With spyderco, in nearly all cases, form follows function. They use very high end materials and have very good build quality. They are very utilitarian and not overly flashy. In general, even their higher end pieces are very affordable and represent a tremendous value. Many of us happen to really like that approach to knife design. Good thing there are so many great companies out there to please all types of customers.

Deleted by MikeC, post number 55 is the appropriate way to deal with this. My apologies.

I get theyre made of top notch materials for the most part but they all look the same. Triangular shaped blades, giant ugly thumb hole and horrendous serrations. Some are even fully serrated...who wants a fully serrated blade?
And.....GO!

One has to use a Spyderco to really appreciate them, they are designed for high performance.

This, thank you mkjellgren for showing us how to go about responding to the op's post.

i have to say i loved the look at first, then i lost intrest in them and moved to CRK. But i love the thumb hole as a perfect circle! i wish more knives had it (Strider).

spyder hole is awesome, i used to not be into spydercos after having half a dozen enduras i returned. but after the bbl and the military line I'm hooked. and if you don't like the leaf blade and ffg then you have not used one. a manix will in my experience out slice a sebenza. not hating on crk in any way i love my unnum but the blade geometry is perfect. nothing more needs to be said lol.

The trademark is expired, I believe, so it's free game. Spyderco also licensed it to a few companies, as is my understanding.

I saw another few knives today not made by spyderco when I was searching for spydercos.

What do you feel is a reasonable price for a used Para2 or military model?

If anyone has one too many extras laying around I'm interested in giving spyderco a try for the right price. Please shoot me an email usmchans@yahoo.com

Thank you
Hans
