What's the knife that has disappointed you the most?

Benchmade Apparition.

I coveted it online and in magazines , payed over $150 for it , got it home and the more I toyed with it the less I liked it.
AO is very crisp but I always feel like Im going to slice off my thumb , I will never buy an AO that is not a flipper model ala Kershaw.
The liner lock was sloppy ! Sloppier than a $30 M-16..... The fit and finish were dispicable for a knife that expensive. The blade was very sharp , just about the only good point... It sits in my drawer unloved and unadmired.

Good thread here:thumbup:You can learn a lot from it too:D

My biggest disappointment was a Böker Walker, the liner lock on it is totally vile and the fit&finish Third World, not cheap either.Real toss:grumpy:

Others which turned out to be a big let down- Buck Alpha Hunter folder, clumsy and too big,why have a sheath for a non sheath knife?? Its smaller cousin the Alpha Dorado is a very good knife though.

You hear a lot of ra ra about Bark River, well the Woodland frankly appalled me. It's got good finish yes,but very nice slippery handles for you to get your fingers off and onto the blade...and for a small knife it's ridiculousy thick-yeah I know,Bushcraft...a small hatchet does it better and is not much worse at slicing:eek:

OK back to you, this is informative!

This was the knife I was going to post about. Just something about it that I didn't like. However, I have since bought many Benchmade that I love and some with the AXIS locks have become my very favorite knife ever. I wouldn't let one bad one turn you away from a company as a whole.

Also, the knives that have a thumb stud very close to the handle work just fine. But you aren't supposed to push them out but up. If you flick it up parallel to the handle the blade will pop open.

shallot.jpg

Kershaw Shalott - nice in the picture but too thin to handle.

SOG Trident Tanto

uncomfortable amount of blade play
Zytel handles feel cheap
the AUS-8 dulled after minimal usage
seat-belt cutter does not work at all (that is one of the main reasons why I bought it)
not a terrible knife. just wasn't worth $75

My biggest disappointment was a Benchmade Griptilian because of those dreadful Noryl handles. I wanted to love it since all the important points (lock, F&F, edge etc) were right but I could not, it felt so dirt cheap. Gave it to my father-in-law the day after it arrived.

Why can't Benchmade make Griptilians in G10? I figured they would have done that by now. Seems like it would be the next most logical step in the evolution of it.

I'm with amen74 on that the grip NEEDS some g10.
Custom/expensive knife
I think the absolute biggest disapointment was a custom I got from Chase Axin. It was a custom "fighter" knife 550 cord cutter/skull crusher on the butt, S30v, g10scales, sharpened swedge on top. First off the edge was garbage I mean like a 4 year old with a belt grinder did it. Fit and finish all around aweful. kydex sheath was a real POS. THEN it fell from about 2 feet and the hook part of the cord cutter broke off. worst of all all my buddies who told me how crazy it was to spend 350 on a knife saw the whole thing and knew I'd been waiting months for it. Chase is a nice guy though and I got my money back.
Production knife
That's easy CRKT KISS absolutely trash I would have rather burned twenty dollars one bill at a time.

+1
Yup,me too :grumpy:

I can't honestly say I've owned one, but about a year ago I decided I had to have a Sebenza...
One of our local knife shops has them in stock, so I went to look at them.
The fit and finish is nice, the blade opens and closes smoothly and the lock up was solid. Other than that I can't see all the hype. I guess I was expecting something magical to happen. No doubt a nice, well made knife, but there is only so much to a folder...

It funny because I have a Kershaw Vapor that I bought at Wally Mart a few years ago for 18 bucks, and I call it my poor mans Sebbie :D

Blade opens and closes smoothly, and locks up solid. I know the blade steel isn't the same level as CRK, but it holds a decent edge and sharpens up easily

Schrade Cliphanger.

Magnificent steaming pile of crap. Worthless serrations, an opening stud that required 8 fingers to open smoothly, a linerlock as thick as a business card, and handle scales (supposedly FRN, I think) so weak that I could easily unlock the knife by squeezing them together. Love the Old Timer line, but this thing was so bad it's one of only 2 knives I've ever tossed.

That's too bad. I got my dad one of the original versions (bolster +faux buffalo horn) a few years back for his birthday and he LOVED that thing. Then he lost it about a year later at a track meet (he's a PE teacher) so I got him one of the Black Class versions (D2 with G10 scales) and he's been using it ever since. He's been more than pleased with his, and I (like a good son) inspected both of those knives before gifting them and found nothing at fault. But, hey, that's how it goes sometimes, right? :o

spyderco centofante. what e cheap feeling knife for a spyderco.bad ergos to. have liked cheap walmart gerbers better.

A Strider SMF.

Kind of sad that a $400 knife would come out the factory with blade play, scuffed markings, and lockup way too tight.

I have one of those POS rusting in a drawer. No pocked time ever and two hands to open it:barf: My oldtimers and sharpfinger have no signs of rust and they are in the same drawer. Ok a tiny bit on the brass bolsters and on the handle...but not on the blade.
Anything and I mean anything by Gerber has been a big disappointment. I handled the multitool and thought it felt ugly and cheap. I have a paraframe but it doesn't hold much of an edge or take one.

Hey folks , those who responded to my Apparition post.

I did come down a bit hard on Benchmade as a whole , my apologies.

Only other Benchmade I own is a Mini Grip and I do love that little knife and like the poster above I sure wish it was G10 instead , oh well , all that aside the Mini Grip is a fantastic knife.

What bummed me so much on the Apparition is the price I paid versus the F&F.
The AO , I know how to flick it with my thumb , it just does not feel as safe as the flipper type AO's from my beloved Kershaw :) and I really do feel like I'm gonna eviscerate myself with it - not that i'm a klutz :D

Seriously though the F&F was horrid for a knife that expensive and from a company as renowned as Benchmade but me being the tinkerer that I am I took her apart and polished her up so that all the mill marks were gone , it looks much nicer now but still languishes in my knife drawer.

Have a good one folks !

ps- I've seen a lot of complaints over Kershaw and CRKT beadblast finish rusting. I for one have a love/hate relationship with bead blasting.
The purpose IMO of BB is so that less time and work go into the actual production of the knife , thus saving us consumers some coin while still being able to buy a great knife.
I religiously polish all my BB knives to some degree which gets rid of the possibility of rust spots and makes the knife much nicer looking to boot !

Ok , now im done :D

one of my disappointments was the CRKT m16-10kz, right out of the box the liner went all the way over to the other scale, but it was like 20 bucks shipped, so i cant complain too much i guess...
