Whats the most are you willing to pay for a knife?

I started like most thinking $100.00 was a lot of money to pay for a knife. Now I am not very interested in $100.00 knives.
Most I spent was $650.00 for a Covert Spitfire prototype I got from Larry Chew at the Eugene show last year. Yep, that was a good deal.
I just got a Larry Davidson balisong for $400.00. The two knives at the top of my next buy list are the scale release Cujo that Larry Chew is working on and a Randall bowie. Neither will be cheap, but they will be great knives and will see plenty of use.
I have realized that it is better to have one great knife than 5 good knives. Or even one good knife than 10 cheap knives.

I wouldn't feel right about spending more than $100 for a 'user'. I have a few in this category to choose from but my current EDC probably cost me no more than $20 (I bought it many years ago). I have spent in the neighborhood of $300 - $400 each for a few 'customs' and quite a bit more for one knife I just had to have! I'm sure sometime in the future, if the funds are available or if I hit the lottery or pick a winning trifecta at the races, I'll see something I like in a higher price range!:D

I MIGHT go as high as $100, but it would have to be at least 50% or more off the retail pricetag, like my last two knives were, and all my future knives will be. ;)

Man, that's a tough one to answer... My currently most expensive knife is in the $325 range, plus not one but two Kenny Rowe sheathes for it that added another $125 or so. I use the living heck out of it. I have less expensive knives, like the first two OVB Bowies that I cannot as of yet bear to use. I daily carry and use my Doziers, and while a fantastic deal for what you get, aren't exactly cheap. I have one Primos, and another on order, that will also see regular carry and/or use. I don't know why the OVB's are safe queens because they probably won't be much for collectability, but they just inspire awe and only get gawked at. Maybe my ultimate goal for a safe queen/collecter will be a Fisk. Another pipe-dream knife for me is one of Ed Fowler's. However, since this is the ultimate hard-use/high performance knife in MY book... I would gladly use a $1500 or so knife. Pretty strange, huh?
I'll let you know if and when I ever figure it out.

Wow! $500-$3000 knives? Man! You guys are insane! Must be nice to have knives like that.

I'm just curious. What do you do with $500-$3000 knives?

Most i've ever payed: $450. The absolute most i would spend on a knife would be $600-900, and only if i got a great deal.

...and there you have it:D

Most I spent was $620

My interest in knives has gone down.
But am still willing to pay around $500 for a piece

the max?
I'd say $1,000

but im mostly into balisongs so $1,000 is a lot for a bali...its just about the most you can spend

The most that I have spent was 550 USD for a Strider PAB, but when you consider that I live in Canada and it was bought with our northern peso, then it came out to almost 1000 CDN after taxes and shipping. Ouch. Considering how much I use it it was worth every penny.

I'm finding real value in scandinavian knives currently. The cutting ability of lasers, and all for 10 - 60 bucks. Ragnar's been getting a lot of my business lately.

Not out yet but i thought you guys would like to see it since it was brought up here, it's from Tom's site.

The most that I (actually my wife) ever spent was $1400 for a Warren Osborne Innova (BTW...I have GREAT wife). I've gone through all the limits (up to that point). I think the first price break comes at around $200 (higher end productions/inexpensive custom) then $500 (lower to mid-range custom). Then $750, for an ordered handemade, then the $1,000 mark. I have a tough time going over $1,500. Obviously, the NUMBER of knives I acquire has diminished considerably. What do I do with them? Well, some pieces up to the $750 range I actually carry and use (these are a select few, on EDC rotation). The rest are displayed in my home office.

It goes without saying that there is a certain cost of making a knife. In my opinion there are several factors that make up the price/value of a knife:

1. Materials - obviously Damascus costs more than most steels, Premium grade Mammoth Ivory costs more than wood, etc.

2. Workmanship - there is more cost (time) in detailed workmanship such as file work, machining, fitting, polishing, etc.

3. Knifemaker's reputation - a premium is certainly warranted for a custom knife by a reputable maker.

4. Supply & Demand - short supply and high demand can certainly draw attention and higher prices. This applies to the materials and the knifemaker.

Just my two cents worth...and what goes into my decision making when considering a new knife. Final words of wisdom...Caveat Emptor

I'm generally a cheapskate... but I'll pay for quality... Working knives 30 - 130 dollars for knives that I will use, unlimited for a display collection. All prices U.S. Dollars
