What's the point of a Sebenza?

Here you go.

Regular on left. Classic on right. You can also get the Insingo point, I like it.

See? The point of the Insingo is awesome. It's a sharp point, so be careful. It might poke you.

Interesting question and answers.

I recently used the sports-car-for-errands analogy myself. It turned out that the person I was talking to does own a Porsche, and does use it to run errands.

After all, when you own a Porsche, why wouldn't you use it as much as possible?

My Sebenza is the same. I own it, so I'm going to use it, because otherwise it would be a waste of money. I can't afford to have a knife that expensive, and that nice, sitting at home. I chose the plain handle because I don't want to ever worry about the cosmetic consequences of using it. An since I fully expect to be using it twenty years from now, barring accidents or tragedy, that amortizes out to costing about as much as a can of Coke each month.

The Sebenza isn't a Ferrari or a Porsche, though – the better comparison would be a nice and solid pick-up truck. How would you feel about getting one of those dinged up and dirty?

I am not a knife collector, ..... but I do greatly admire fine workmanship and design. As I have gotten older (and smarter, ... hopefully) I have tended to buy fewer, but better things. My Sebenza (when I get it in a few weeks) will join a few other items that I always take special pride in when I handle or use them. My BMW, Russell Boots, Browning Shotgun, Wellenstyn Parka, Fortis Watch, Vespa scooter, and a few other selected items all have that special ability to making me feel rewarded for having worked long (45 years) and hard in my career.

The car analogy is never a good one to try and use. A Ferrari is largly still a hand made machine that is literally out of reach to any one but the most solvent of people. Anyone that can drop 100K on any car is buying a toy to play with at the weekends, they will usually have a nice Merc, Audi or BMW for going to the shops in. I don't carry my CRKs at the weekend and a Spyderco, BM or Kershaw through the week and I'm sure most here don't either. :p
CRKs are production knives with some amount of hand finishing and they are not comparable to something hand made or the price of a house, IMO. The point of a Sebenza was to create the best tool possible using the best materials possible in line with the design philosophy Chris decided upon for his endeavor. There is no such thing as "too well built" IMO and if it performs as intended then that's that. For some people there is no point to a Sebenza but for some there is every point to something like a Sebenza as they want the materials, design and engineering that goes into the item and are willing to pay for it.

I'll start by saying that I got my 1st sebenza (large plain 21) not too long ago. It is the finest crafted knife I've ever handled and I've carried and used it in the time I've had it.

From what I know of the knife and Chris Reeve, it seems like it was designed to be a utility knife, that with proper care and maintenance will last a lifetime. But I sometimes feel like it is TOO well built. To me, EDCing a Sebenza feels like driving a Ferrari to run errands. It just doesn't feel like it's living up to its potential.

What are your thoughts on the purpose of a Sebenza?

I could embolden the points I agree with, but I think the whole post has merit.
Good post. :D

I'd love to find a top-quality, high-end house or car for $400. ;)

You and me both, mate. I remember a few years back a pissed off wife sold her husbands Lotus for £5 on ebay, not sure what happened in the end with that one though ?..... :D:thumbup:

I sincerely wish I had a well thought out, articulate response to this question ..

I wish I did, but all I know is everytime I use one I'm happy. The feel of it, the design, that's enough for me. I consider it well worth the price of admission.

I've never been using a Seb and had the thought I could be using a better knife cross my mind.

Is chris reeves just a designer label now since the advancements of other manufacturers, giving the same warranties etc?

Nice wee bit of trolling there, coping. We are smarter than that here though. ;)

I asked myself this question a few years back, comparing the Sebenza I had had for more than 15 years to newer (and cheaper) knives with harder steels and what I assumed were more up to date designs. Got rid of my Sebenza and discovered that I missed it--missed the purity, simplicity and rock solid reliability of the design. Missed the exceptional customer service CRK provides. Using and owning fine tools has always been a source of delight for me--here's one I can have with me at all times, use any number of times a day and enjoy each task I do with it.
