What's the scoop on Chinese D2 steel?

I'm extremely skeptical over anything manufactured and/or produced in China. How does it hold up against CMP-D2, or any other D2 steel not made in China? Does it break easier than American D2?

Is a knife made with Chinese D2 worth $352.80 USD?

That’s a very specific price. What knife are you looking at? At that price territory I would 1. Buy something made in the USA.(or maybe Russia) And 2. Be more concerned with the design of the knife rather than the steel type.

The Spyderco Warrior Hawk, which conveniently just went up in price from $336USD to $352.80USD. Is it really worth that? I'm trying to find the justification in such a high asking price point for Chinese made steel. Is Chinese made steel REALLY that good? Serious question btw.

Feel free to jog on/scroll on. Or you can simply answer the question, "is a knife made with Chinese D2 worth $352.80USD?"
Or not......
These questions invariably lead to the same Chinese bad vs good arguments. Better to learn to use the search function and read the large amount of information thats already available instead of asking for regurgitation of that information yet again....

Didn't you ask this same question about that same hawk a few months ago? Maybe you don't remember but....

I have no idea but my first instincts would be that any D2 would not make a great steel for an axe because it’s not very tough.

Precisely this. Spyderco doesn't specify where they obtain the steel from, nor do they mention the heat treatment processes involved, despite me asking on THEIR forum. My research on THIS forum has lead me to believe that if the heat treatment process is done right, D2 is adequately tough.

Because I do not have information regarding where the steel was manufactured/imported from, nor the heat treatment process involved, I'm left to assume the steel was imported from China where it was most likely manufactured, which then leads to my following question: is a knife made with Chinese D2 worth $352.80? Considering a billet of American D2 starts at around $20USD. https://www.metalsdepot.com/tool-steel-products/d2-steel-flat

You think, of all the manufacturers of knives out there, that Spyderco would likely have an "inappropriate" heat-treat protocol??

(Edit: spelling)
Well, they don't give the specifics on it. So your guess is as good as mine.

Unless, you can provide me a link from their website on how they do the heat treatment?

I understand this. Taiwan is an island roughly 180km east of mainland China, so unless Spyderco couriers in the metals used in the knives manufactured there, either by plane, boat, or magic carpet, how else would Taiwan obtain the steel?

There are a whole bunch of steel mills in Taiwan that can roll out D2. It's a very old steel that a lot of people use.

Taiwan is a great country for knifemaking. Spyderco is a great company with a very long and honest history in the world of knives.

If you want the ax buy it. If you want to come here and play devil's advocate you're likely to be burned to a crisp.

And before you ask no company is going to share details on their vendors and detailed prodcution process information with a stranger on the internet.
