What's the Sharpest and Dullest knives you've received out of the box

SHARPEST: Medford M-48
DULLEST: Chris Reeves Umnumzaan
It's always disheartening when you spend that kind of money and recieve a knife that isn't very sharp. Sure, a lot of us can fix that ourselves without too terribly much hassle, but it's a pain in the butt in my opinion. I like to use the factory edge on all my knives until it gets dull enough to put to the stones. I wouldn't mind so much but with the amount of knives that a lot of us have, sometimes it feels like a second job maintaining them.

Performance edge if I recall correctly. Perhaps there was an oversight. I ordered mirror polish blade, and it seemed almost as if maybe an edge was put on there, but when the sanding and polishing was done it wiped the edge right off. I'm not sure to be honest.
you should let them know they probably wanna find out what went wrong

What is the sharpest knife you have ever received straight out of the box? What is the dullest?

Sharpest knife= Cold Steel Trail Master San Mai III. Unbelievable edge, especially for a 5/16th in thick slab. Truly hair popping. Handled 2 other samples and both were the same consistency of sharpness.

Dullest Knife= Kailash Blades Scourge Kukri. Beyond butterknife dull. Zero edge. Couldn't break skin if you wanted to. Dullest new knife I have ever received, hands down.
Pretty much every Cold Steel , Spyderco , KAI etc have been plenty sharp .:thumbsup:

I did however buy a butter knife once that came appropriately dull ! :p

Sharpest: Another vote for the Dragonfly 2
Dullest: Esee Lite Machete. I need to practice sharpening longer blades anyways.

I have four Griptilian series knives that are not dull, but they don't seem as sharp out of the box compared to other well known brand knives.

Dullest= pretty much any of my machete, since they tend to come without a finished edge.

Sharpest would have to be one of my Good Kife Co and David Mary David Mary knives.

got two Tramontina with no, uhh.. there's no edge on the tip, and a few inches down from the tip. It's cool, because I have a project, but I do not have a machete with a full edge. Are a lot of machetes like that, or

You know I make machetes, too, right? ;)

I started BESS testing my new or LNIB knives a little while ago. Of the 20 or so knives on the list, the average score is around 212. The best was the BHQ exclusive Shaman in M4 at 155 and the worst was a Tactile Rockwall in Magnacut at 370.

Dullest can't remember

Sharpest although not a class of knives we are talking about here but easily sharper than any bushcraft/survival/combat etc... Knives by a huge margin - my Shinichi Watanabe blades. "Dangerously" sharp and the only knives I've accidentally badly cut myself with. A simple light brush on my skin resulted in deep cuts.

Although I guess few knife makers have the sharpening skills of this gentleman.

I'd love to commission him to make me a Bowie but don't currently have the funds for such a knife.

Had a Cold Steel Code 4 that was insanely sharp.

Dullest knife? I've been pretty lucky with this. I think the dullest knife was a Kershaw I bought years ago. Can't remember the name, but I'm 99% sure they discontinued the model.

Dullest: Condor Hudson Bay. I still love the hell out of that knife though and it is always in my Jeep at the ready.

Sharpest: I really don't know. I've had a lot of knives come very sharp for production. I'll switch it up a bit and say which production company I believe to have the most skilled sharpeners producing the sharpest, most consistent edges. #1 for me is old school Kershaw (2005-2015 era, I don't know about their current stuff). #2 Spyderco, I've always had a good experience with their edges. And... I guess that's really about the only two production companies that have consistently impressed me throughout the years. I have a feeling that they get a solid team of sharpeners and they stick around longer term than most companies for whatever reason. With every other company I've had a mix of impressive edges, pretty good edges, and wonky edges.
I agree, but that’s nowhere near “old school” when it comes to Kershaw.

True, but he's right though. That era was my Kershaw years. I usually got a very sharp knife from Kershaw. Probably why I listed my dullest knife as being from them, because it stuck out the most.

Kershaw used to produce a really decent product for the money.

Ah, but he’s not though.

2005-2015 is not even close to “old school” for Kershaw. They made quality knives then for sure, but it ain’t old school. Think 1974-1999. That’s “old school” Kershaw. Doesn’t matter what your particular history with them is. Hell, it’s not even mid school.

Kershaw was the sh!t in the 80s-90s. They only got better. Some of their Chinese produced stuff is just junk but that’s not what I buy or why I like the company.

I guess I’m gettin’ old. Now, get off my lawn!

I didn't mean he was right that 2015 Kershaw is old school.

I'm getting old too. Holy crap the grays popping out in my beard!

Have a great rest of your weekend my friend 🍻

Haha yea that's true. I guess that era seems old school to people who just got into the hobby in the passed few recent years, but you're right, they've been making good stuff a lot longer. That's when I started getting serious about knives (about 2005ish) so they seem like old school Kershaws to me.
