there's a similar thread but it's asking for recommended sharpies to buy. my question covers past and present. i just want to qualify it thus:

1. exclude box cutters, straight razors, scalpels, cloth cutters, other edged "trade" tools.
2. refers to honed continous edges, not saws or stipples or anything.
3. some particulars on whether you bought it, received it as a gift, or if you made it yourself.
4. share some of your experiences with it.
5. pictures will be appreciated.

maraming salamat!

Is that sharpest out of the box? I can get this one sharp enough.

Mike Snody Bailout. I pulled it out of the shipping box, and cut myself un wrapping it. VERY fine edge right from the maker.
I also have a Wharncliffe from John Wylie Jr. that was sharpened on the Wicked EDge system by its previous owner. Hair splitting sharp.

With a good set of stones, and a proper control of edge angles, every knife could be made hair whittling sharp. Right now my Super Blue Caly 3.5 seems to take such an edge the easiest of all my knives.

I have bought quite a few good knives that came to me sharp , but the sharpest one was a Boker Plus Jim Wagner Reality Based knife . It was scalpel sharp right out of the box . So sharp in fact that one evening sitting at my computer I took it out to look at it and was handling it a bit as I turned it to see it from different angles . Then I notice a drop of blood on the edge of my keyboard . Looking at my hands I see that I have blood dripping from a pretty fair cut that I didn't even feel . That's sharp !

My Bob Crowder , ATS 34 mirror polished, seymchan meteorite bolsters, mammoth tooth handle, tapered tang. Bought this from Bob at last year Montana Knifemakers Ass. show. Very sharp

My William Henry E6 is the sharpest knife out of the box I've ever owned.

My Fiddleback Forge Nessmuk, scandi ground, is the sharpest, out of box, that I've owned. I just got a Bark River modified Ontario machete, and for any blade, it's sharp. It's scary sharp, because it's a 14" long full convex edge, it shaves, slices through thin catalog paper. Machetes need to be sharp, but Bark River took this to another level.

Im not usually all that impressed with most factory sharpening jobs. Out of the many Spydercos, Benchmades, Striders, a few each of several other brands & a few customs, the 12+ CRKs (though currently own three) have been the most consistent with a carefully beautiful, super sharp edge out of the box. Out of several CRKs I've owned a small Sebenza 21 S35VN, was a major standout. It was "how the hell?" sharp.

This Buck 110 in 420 HC is the sharpest knife I own... factory edge that was stropped on an unloaded leather belt.

Spyderco WT Karambit and Beretta WT Avenger 2 (the one with CF laminated blade). Guess sharpness is preloaded by default with WT designs :)

Alan Davis EDC 4" has to be the sharpest I've seen so far. 1095 Clay tempered with suguha style hamon.
Hair whittling sharp, could cut free standing hairs with just a touch. Superbly grinded, actually.

I'd have to say my RJ Martin Overkill.

Has anyone else noticed that most of the knives that are the sharpest are customs.....

I guess knifemakers know how to put a sharp edge on their knives.

When it comes to sharpness RJ is in a class of his own. I have his Devastator, and when I first got it the blade was so sharp that if it wasn't for the flipper doubling as a guard I'd be scared to use it.
BUT, I'm not editing the original choices, edges on those two can challenge any other knife, custom or production, I have ever handled.

My murray carter neck knife is easily the sharpest of my knives

I have been wanting a Murray Carter knife for quite a while now. I'd love to take his metallurgy class too but for the time being I'll just drool over the Neck Knives he makes.
