What's the strangest item you have in your survival kit/pack?

I'd have to say an extra pair of sunglasses. I am always wearing them, and if I lose the ones I have on I have backups.

I carry hand sanitizer, contact solution, and a spare pair of contacts as well. It seems like a good insurance policy against broken glasses or contacts going bad during a crisis.

It surprisingly easy to lose contacts in everyday life sometimes, let alone an emergency.

I also carry a small metal cross - if luck's against you, it's good to have God by your side.

The pencil sharpener is a great idea!

You guys opened my eyes so to speak, I need to add some spare glasses to my kit.

My smaller kit has the essentials to survive, with some of the extra "odd" things I mentioned above.

In my bug-out bag, I have my passport, copies of all my photo IDs, cash in small bills, and a very small amount of real gold in very small individual pieces. If it really hits the fan, that would allow you to get out of the country and, if the US dollar is devalued or worthless because of that crisis, you'll still be able to get stuff with the metal. That's obviously worst-case scenario, but it's being prepared.

weird item? Starbucks Via Via instant coffee.

I, too, carry the Starbucks instant packs of "Via". I actually have them in all my packs (EDC pack, vehicle bags, etc.).

In addition, I carry a "Jet Boil" system in my Laserne pack along with an "Esbit" mini stove kit (with fuel cubes) as my backup. I also have the Esbit and fuel cubes in all the other packs/bags just in case there is a need for an emergency cup of coffee...:D

I have some:
-Glucose Tablets (for some quick energy)
-Starbucks Via Instant Coffee (good field coffee)
-Caffeine loaded chewing gum
-30' of 175lb test kevlar cord
-Several packs of body wipes for a field shower
-Battery powered cell phone charger
-Solid ceramic razor blade

+1 SouthOrd JackPick, plastic handle. I practice lockpicking, as it helps in my job. Freaks customers out when I schedule a service call and no one's there to let me in. They show up an hour late and I'm almost done. Law says its not illegal as long as your not taking anything. Most times, I'm leaving something.
