What's the strongest a fixed blade can be without weighing too much?

Hack all you want , and it comes sharp enough to shave hair and push cut phone book paper

That's the cqb one , actually not much bigger than the belt knife, it packs a punch though. Comes dang near mirror polished edge and the weight is balanced to where let's just say it's designed as a weapon more than a tool and the couple times I've put it in that pallet let me know it's real good at what it's made for

beautiful blades. but are you saying you cut the book cleanly in half with one swing with a half inch thick blade?

Almost made it through three books at one point but the log I was chopping on was too unstable and the ground beneath it too squishy so it's robbing a lot of the chopping power.

Not to mention I'm crunched down on my knees swinging one handed to be able to film & chop at the same time. U-Line sends us lots of catalogues at work so I've been able to do a lot of test chopping LOL.

I must know how to get that Parang, it's calling my name.

12" blade of 1/4" S7 tool steel, almost full flat grind so it is surprisingly nimble in hand. It was a bare blade that I did the handle on to compliment the style of the others I've purchased from William Nease of UnsubtleBlades. Currently working on a wooden scabbard for it (slowly) LOL! FWIW, William will make you one if you ask him nicely I'm sure. ;)

Unbelievably, still getting time out errors. Too many responses are about posters, not the topic. Mods, please close this.

Thank you both! It's a big, thick and heavy chunk of almost-INFI steel; what's not to like! :D:D:D:thumbup::rolleyes::cool:

Also, it does work quite well; even a light swing is devastating against many objects that have been put in front of it LOL.

With it's brethren:

That is some awesomeness right there. How much do they each weigh :p

Sorry, but what IS the topic? "Why do knives break?" or is it "What's the strongest a fixed blade can be without weighing too much?"

I think we are all trying to figure that out. I posed my theories on why they break....cross sectional areas....but the latter I know I will need further clarification on.

Due to this kind of post, Mods, please close this thread.

Why? Seems like czechmate has some knives that don't look like they would break, and you asked how much a knife that wouldnt break would weigh.

Seems like it is exactly on topic.

Talking about knives, seems like.

That bottom one is sexy though. Should be tough seeing as it's made out of 1/4" S7, but doesn't look too heavy either. Good stuff.

Most of the speculation is not about the topic. It was about increasing strength while maintaining traditional weight and balance.

I'm not the only one having this problem with 524 time outs.

Well...the topics of threads drift. Nothing one can do about it. Believe me, if you open a thread, it doesn't mean you get to control it. Learned that long ago. And talking about the weight of Czechmate's blades hardly seems like much of a drift.

I know I'd like to know how much those bad boys weigh! Very cool knives.

Czechmate has some big blades that clearly have not broken. I wonder what they weigh? Is that not what this thread is about. Strong blades and weight?

So Czech, how much?

that's freaking impressivr

Or better yet, the RD Signature Series; 3/8" thick S7 blade next to a becker bk2...:thumbup:

100_0792.jpg

The Signature Series are monsters. Even the regular RD series are. I have seen Justin Gingrich (the guy who made them) try top damage them and fail. Ended up shooting one...still did nothing. Really designed for an Army Ranger by an Army Ranger. Not subtle guys those Rangers.

Funny thing, they dont use knives to pry open stuff like doors. They use their shotguns.

I agree 100%! See too many fools using knives for what they were NOT designed for. Plenty options for a light axe available that will work in much less time, better with less effort, and reserve the knife for it's intended purpose!

"Mods, please close this thread because I can't control it and I started it" (paraphrase), does not seem proper. The concept of size/thickness/weight vs. indestructability is being addressed. Some interesting knives have been shown and some interesting (even if not the OPs) theories put forth. Marci has shown considerable self control. craytab has been less than dogmatic. :) The mods have no need of my vote, but I believe the thread, at this point, has merit. Please carry on.
