Looks like it has been almost a year since this thread was active. I've enjoyed reading on this topic and actually learned a few things.
I love both folders and hefty fixed blades. I admit I am like 95% of you where actually carrying a large fixed blade is kind of rare as my camping and hunting days are mostly over. And to wear one in town invites unwanted scrutiny and of course teetering on the edge of the law IF my jacket happens to close over most of the knife. I have a large Junglas blade that I DO use in whacking down tree branches in my yard. I've got two of these Royal Empress trees (supposedly the world's fastest growing shade tree) that have turned out to be a real PITA in keeping clear of low hanging branches. There are other tools that will accomplish the same job, but hey -- this is more fun.
Also I admit that most of my big fixed blades are just waiting for the Zombie Apocalypse, which these days the possibility seems to have some validity.
With regard to my folders, for many years I had stayed in the $100 range, except for splurging on the SOG FatCat about 5 years ago. But honestly, that knife is simply too big for pocket carry and needs to go on my belt. Problem is there are too many other things that also need room on the belt, such as IWB holsters and also room for my quite heavy Leatherman Charge (with tool kit). So the FatCat gets little use. Someday when I tire of playing with it, I will sell it.
I just recently jumped into the big league (I guess you purists would say the "bottom" of that category price wise) with my purchase of my first Rick Hinderer XM-18. I am breaking it in now, and it has quickly taken over as my EDC. I purchased it only because SIG offered this knife in a Legion format and as I am the proud owner of a Legion P226 9mm DA/SA, this was one of those times when I splurged on a lark. I guess after owning it for some 2 weeks, I admit I have come to appreciate its precision quality. Now that I've taken a bite of the apple, there may be another quality folder in my future -- but it will be one that "I just have to have"! We all know of that ailment.
