whats up with kershaw?

Thanks for calling me back today and attempting to make things right. You took the time to call me personally after hearing about my posts here. I only wish you or someone from your company had done that ASAP after I called you yesterday at business opening. The issue is resolved, I wish you the best in 2011.

In less than 48 hours the problem is settled. It is likely the matter could have been settled without melodrama. But it is settled.

Kershaw has always been right with me. Great quality control, good customer service, excellent product lineup with good steel. Hard to find such awesome value.

Ended up buying the RAM today after some deliberation. I put aside some money for a Spyderco PM2, but my favourite dealer sold out of them and isn't sure when they'll get more in stock. So the money went toward an ESEE Izula and a Kershaw RAM instead. :D

Looking forward to trying out the hawk lock at last.

Hello all,
This is my first foray into Bladeforums. I am not sure if this is the proper etiquette, as I am posting about a specific knife (Kershaw Crown 3160) with some specific questions.

To tell the truth, I had been interested in this knife for the past 9 months or so; I tried to buy it over the summer, couldn’t find it, and a couple weeks ago found it on Amazon and picked it up at last.

It's a new model, so it probably took some extra time to hit the market. I was very excited to get it, though I hadn't seen any reviews on it anywhere.

Its main advertised feature (besides its good looks, attractive price, and micarta scales) was the NEW BUTTON LOCKING system, as advertised on Amazon's page:

"Polish your image with one of Kershaw's new Gentleman's knives. Polished blades and bolsters compliment this handsome Micarta scales. Kershaw's new button release makes closing the knife simple and intuitive. "

Also, here’s the description on Kershaw’s own website: http://kershawknives.com/productdetails.php?id=531&brand=kershaw

I was also going off of some information I had read on a different forum:

http://www.2brothersknife.com/2bkcforum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=881

Where an "updated" picture was very clearly posted, and the smoothness of the "lockback" emphasized. Granted, this is January 2010, but THIS IS THE ONLY INFORMATION ABOUT THIS KNIFE ON THE INTERNET! What was I to expect?

I only make a big deal about this because this was my PRIMARY (read: “only”) interest for ordering this knife. I had sworn off Kershaws because they only seemed interested in manufacturing liner locks, which I am generally unexcited about except that they seem to cost a lot less. But THIS knife promised something more, for the customer with my peevishness.

SO, a few days ago, I opened the box from Amazon, and beheld an absolutely beautiful knife, but, from what I initially saw, no button. And when I peered closer, noticed a LINER LOCK! And not just a liner lock, but one that had slipped past quality control because it locks open with the teeniest fraction of the liner. Solidly built otherwise (seemingly; though I have not used it). It’s definitely heavy, with the bolsters seemingly fused to the liners, and a flow-through design.

I contacted Kershaw’s CS, asking if a version of the knife existed with the much mentioned but illusory “button lock” and if so, where could I find one. Four days passed without a response, so, in my impatience, I sent the knife back to Amazon for it being different from the web description.

I guess I don’t collect a ton of knives, so I didn’t feel like hanging onto it. My only reason for posting, I guess, is to spread the word: The Kershaw Crown is a liner lock knife, and to ask Kershaw (if anyone from there happens to read this): HOW COME YOU DON’T UPDATE YOUR PRODUCT INFORMATION WHEN THE PRODUCT CHANGES? IS YOUR WEBMASTER SWAMPED OR SOMETHING?

The Crown changed from it's proto'd state. It's a liner lock now. I'll get our web site changed. Sorry for the confusion.

Welcome to the forums

Thanks for responding! As long as I have my soap box, could you update the picture for the OSO Sweet as well? The blade doesn't look like that anymore. I understand that it looked that way at one time, but it's not likely the model customers will buy.

Kinda disappointed to see this all on another forum, and without the OP mentioning anything about the outcome. Perhaps you are waiting for the knife to arrive first mknopfler?

Also, when you send the original knife back, please put it to my attention so that I can personally inspect the damage and report back to the members here.

They locked the thread there to contain it and keep it from getting out of hand. I put in my post there about your reply, and I think the mods there looked at the long drama thread here and then considered their thread done at that point.

Maybe folks here can keep an eye on other forums to see if this "issue" turns up elsewhere.

I'd like to say I'm surprised but I'm really not considering his behavior here so far.

I keep an eye on them; that's why I replied on THR.

I don't think it'll come up again, mknopfler has expressed his happiness with how the result turned out, after Thomas generously offered to fix the problem, and later with the kershaw-knives retailer talking to him.

To go back to the original point of the thread:

I have my share of Kershaws, but my all time favorite is the DWO 3000. Old design, nothing fancy, but they just work and keep on working. Disappear in a pocket and you can't scratch up an all-rubber knife body (steel liners, of course, but they aren't visible). I keep picking them up for a song, usually dirty and with a broken blade tip, and once cleaned (easy to take apart), reshaped, and sharpened they're an ideal pocket knife. I'm glad Kershaw keeps making them.

I've never bothered to send one back to Kershaw, since I find a shorter blade a little handier to use, but I'm sure they would take care of me if I did.

The other day I picked up a Black Colt, and while I can't complain about the quality the rubber grips on that are just a little too bulky for it to be easy to carry. Hey, if one knife suited everybody what use would this forum be?

But, yeah, Kershaw's great.
