whats ur favorite stockman

I will say that I'm quite pleased with the comparatively large sheepsfoot on my Case/Carhartt medium stockman. Very good fit and finish too.

I've never seen these before, they look great! Do they make other sizes like a large stockman? What is the scale material? Canvas micarta would be the most appropriate I suppose but I don't want to assume.

The Stockman is my favorite pattern by far. If I had to pick one as my personal favorite it would have to be this #66 in Blood Red bone.

I decided to take a couple pics of my favorite stockmen in each size I own, in 1/8" increments, from 4⅜" down to 3⅜".

From left: Moore Maker, Queen, Tidioute, S&M, Case, Fight'n Rooster, Rough Rider, Fight'n Rooster, Rough Rider.

Here they are with the main clip opened.

3 are in stainless, 4 in carbon, 1 tool steel and 1 Damascus. 3 swedged, 6 without. 5 in bone, 2 in stag, 1 in wood, 1 in horn.
6 with round bolster, 3 with square. 4 sheepfoot nicks on mark side, 5 on the pile side. 6 with nail nicks, 3 with long pulls.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of commonality between them, but they all have great snap and action, they all take a great edge,
and they all have three useful blades. And I guess most important of all, they each have some WOW characteristic that I love.

FordRanger, I have a Case Carhartt large stockman in duck-brown G10 on the way.
Everybody,
My Queen Bird's Eye Maple #9 large stockman is no longer my favorite.
One spring broke by itself, and I sent it back expressing the hope that they'd replace both springs, because what were the chances I had two batches of springs in one knife.
I had great communication with my CS rep, and the knife came back incredibly fast, but the spring was replaced with one so mushy it barely held the blades closed. Then the other spring broke. I asked for a set of springs and pins to do it myself, and got no answer at all.
Meanwhile I guess my chromed Boker USA is my favorite. Or my old Utica.

Very interesting post, Jeff.:thumbup: I enjoyed seeing your favorites by size, and reading some miscellaneous stats about them.
But please don't leave us hanging now!! I'd certainly appreciate a list of the WOW factor for each knife!

The OP for this thread who was looking for advice hasn't posted since April, so he may not be getting any value from this discussion. However, it's a fun topic.

My problem is picking out a single "favorite." I've got a lot of them and they all have their place.

My favorite just from a "I really like it" perspective is my Case 6375 Large Stockman, stainless steel with the purple bone handles.

However, it's much bigger than I need for most things so it really only gets pocket time on the weekends.

My most carried overall is a Case 6318. It's a pocket friendly pattern with the rounded bolsters and slim serpentine frame.

I prefer the blade layout better on the 63032 Medium stockman, but the square bolsters make it a little less carry friendly so even though I like it better than the '18, I just don't carry it as much.

For a while this Case 6344 was getting a lot of pocket time. It's small enough (3 1/4" long) that it sort of disappears (square bolsters and all) and I love the very sharp point on the main clip blade.

When I want something with some size, but less bulk than the big 6375, I go with this Case 6347. Only thing I don't like about it is the lack of a well defined point on the clip blade.

This one *should* be my favorite. It is certainly my most expensive. A GEC Dixie Stockman. Great blade shapes, carries slim for such a large knife. However, I just haven't ever gotten around to carrying it yet. So many others to choose from. (Pic reused from the dealer I bought it from, GunstockJacksKnives.com. This is the actual knife I received. Hope Barry doesn't mind.)

I like the CASE Humpback stockman. Spear master, which is unusual, sunk-joints as well.

Queen Cutlery's Small Stockman in WCSB and D2 is a very good compact knife. The Forum Knife of 2008 from Northwoods in stag was based on this same frame, not as well put together though...

OK, here goes:
Moore Maker #5304- long clip, markside sheepfoot nick, love burnt bone.
Queen #49- gorgeous wood, D2 steel.
Tidioute #53- low lying blades, phenomenal ram's horn.
S&M #09- gorgeous long pull clip, great bone, very pocket friendly for a 4" knife.
Case #47- burnt bone, beautiful Damascus steel, 3-spring (no krinked blades)
Fight'n Rooster prototype- magnificent bone, tremendous F&F, best quality (probably my nicest knife, period).
Rough Rider #441- nice stag, super sleek in pocket.
Fight'n Rooster stag- toasty stag and top quality.
Rough Rider #406- unusually endearing reverse Eureka pattern. Not sure exactly why, but anyone who has one, likes it!

Case 6332. Jigged bone 70s stockman with half stops, a rare bird but the best of both worlds IMO. Also has a pen in lieu of the spey.

WAIT......did you just say stockmen with half stops?

I didn't know there was such a bird.

Can you share more ........ especially pictures?

Thanks,

Jim

Of the stockmans I've handled, the Buck 301/371 would be my favorites. I ordered a couple Rough Rider, Colt, and Hammer Brand stockmans back in December, but they arrived after I had to go back to work, so I've not seen them yet.

That is fantastic looking. I'm a huge fan of the 70's case knives, particularly the stockmans. They have more value (quality/price ratio) than any other period of case knife IMO.

The Stockman has long been my favorite pattern, it's just what size to use that I get hung up on occasionally - most often I prefer the 897UH or 6318 size. Fortunately Schrade USA used to offer a nice variety of frame sizes but Case still does. Buck only offered three frame sizes (307, 301, 303) of Stockman pattern knives, but I do have at least one of each - need a picture of them too. OH
