What's with all the Flakes lately?

It's interesting that this has been brought up since I recently had an incident where an "I'll take it" was posted and then nothing, zilch, nada. I lost a sale to the next person because I told him I would wait for 24 hours. The first guy flaked but I had to wait and then lost to the guy that posted seconds because he purchased another knife in the meantime (can't blame him at all). Communication is the key to a good transaction and it only take a few moments. One last rant...how about the folks that never let you know that the knife arrived safely? All it takes is..."I just got the (insert cool toy here)...thanks so much!!!" It's just odd in my book at least...rant off!

You need to put a time limit on how long an 'I'll take it' is good for.
The luxury of using that system, which is a fair one, doesn't mean that you get a day to think about it.
It means, you are ready to buy....

Agreed with your last point.
It's nice when the seller posts it as shipped and the buyer confirms receipt of the item...

I think I will take your advice on this with my next sales thread...Buyer must post an "I'll take it" followed by a PM and payment (unless otherwise communicated).

Good advice about the time limit. I'll not let that happen to me again (where I wait all weekend after an "I'll take it" for a payment that never comes).

Regarding shipping, I always ship USPS Priority, and request tracking (free) so I can get updates from the Post Office on progress and notice when it's delivered. But, I still appreciate it when the buyer communicates that it's arrived and all is well. 2-way communication in always the best.

This is how I word it now: The first "I'll take it" posted in this thread followed by PM or e-mail for payment info gets the knife.

I always follow up with a tracking No. and ask the buyer to let me know when the knife is safe in their hands.

Flaking is nothing new, it's part of doing business on the forum. Just happens here often because our transactions aren't that of normal online retail where once you pay then they send your item. Here you talk, ask questions, negotiate, etc...and that allows the other party to back out at any time they wish to. As other members have said, when selling, keep your options open and put a time limit on when i'll take it is good. You can even say I'll take it is good only if followed up by prompt payment.

Here's something I do, probably not the most ethical thing to do, but it works for me. I'll take it isn't a contract for me. I'll take it is gibberish words. It's a contract when their money is in my hand, then I have an obligation to perform a service to them, which is deliver what they paid for. Until that money is in my hand and we've done an exchange of cash for goods, I keep that knife listed. Only once I've been paid do I put up the Sold. Simple rule, money talks, bs walks.

I was just about to say this exact thing! This is my Dads favorite phrase, and I hear him say it almost every time we are conducting business with our clients. He will tell them straight up "let me see the money, then will talk"!

I recently had a flake, happens almost every time i start a sales thread. What pisses me off the most is when you send them paypal info and never hear back from them. A simple I changed my mine is better then not saying a thing!

At this point in my life I don't let it keep me up at night, just part of the game now a days! Re-post and move on!

Agreed.

I think if you just make it clear from the first PM or email, that while we negotiate, if a firm offer from someone who is ready to pay comes in, it's a take it for full price, or leave it, and negotiations are over.

Nothing unethical about that, as long as it's communicated up front.

Hearing what others do to avoid being screwed over by unethical sellers, or buyers with no moral compass, has been very helpful to me in this thread and I want to thank all of you for your input. I see that one of the guys -see post #1- who flaked on me (after keeping my money for 3 days he had a change of heart and decided to keep the knife and back out of the deal) is back offering another knife for sale yesterday: good luck to the buyer!

Thanks again for some very helpful advice.

Some people just don't get it. That will never change.

Ok so what to do about this flake? You can see his name if you go to the thread. I sold a pristine small regular Sebenza last night to a buyer that asked zero questions and sent payment fairly quickly. 8 hours later he emails about blade centering which I tell him is towards the presentation side as I'm getting ready to pack this up for the post office. He whines about having to send it in to CRK and asks for a refund 8 hours after the money was sent because blade centering is a "pet peeve" but he so really bad wanted a small regular. Sounds like buyers remorse the morning after more than anything to me. I try to be fair on here, but that's pretty piss poor behavior IMO.

Now my thread is marked sold and closed and will be bumped down to the next page before the day is over probably. And I bet many would claim it bad taste to leave him a negative feedback, but really don't see what's wrong with that in this case with funds in my account for 8 hours and almost out the door to the post office. Of course I could've ignored the email and mailed it anyway and said the hell with you, but that's what happens when you try to be fair to strangers that can't come through.

I hear ya, uofaengr.
After waiting 3 days for buyer to pay after he said "I'll take it" --left my For Sale Thread on the second page where it's done nothing. After he finally flaked out, I had nowhere to go but this thread. Sure I can relist item in another week, but who knows when I can finally sell it and get it out of here.

As for leaving negative feedback, as the moderator pointed out on page 1, no feedback can be left if there was not a completed transaction. I don't like it, but that's the forum rule. Good luck with your re-sale.

There actually was a completed transaction as I still have his money. He just now wants it back. I'll get around to it eventually this weekend.

Wow!
Guess there are some folks that have no ethics, no standards, no moral compass. A person just out for himself and no regard for anyone else.
Don't know why he has not been banned....

If everything on this thread adds up, I am sure RevDevil will take the necessary action to deal with the problem.

According to that old thread, he never even made full restitution back in 2009. And now he has a new account? Why are both accounts not banned yet?

I'm going to do that in a few minutes actually. I need to have just a wee bit more proof.
