what's with everyone bashing slipjoints?

It's a free country, did anyone else get the gist of his post?

I'm not trying to be a dork [maybe it comes naturally?] but there are things / niches a slipJ is good at
and there are things / niches a locker is good at, things that I do, I speak for myself.

Ok, I get it your slipjoints are perfect for you but why the beef against locking and hard use folders? Aren't you glad that others buy locking folders meaning there are more slipjoints in the market for you?

You are actually doing spine whack tests....on a slip joint? Really?

Do you mind if I ask why? What exactly are you testing?

Only slightly more retarded than spine whack tests on anything else, really...

Other than the basic, tap it on a tabletop to check basic lock up, type spine whack.

I like slipjoints quite a bit. There's something to be said for a small, handsome, easily carried, non threatening folding knife with thin blades actually intended to cut something. If I need to pry, there's other options. Even a "hard use" folder makes a terrible prybar. The lack of a lock is no problem and helps ensure (enforce?) proper knife safety.

I feel a lot of knife nuts could really learn a lot by carrying a humble slipjoint for a while.

I get you and that's not an issue with me.

Not really, learning how to use a knife properly is the result of good instruction and common sense.

Even a "hard use" folder makes a terrible prybar.

Why did you feel you needed to include this? What has bashing another's knife nut's choice have to do with what you like?

I get the feeling like I'm in a conversation with some people arguing about sneakers and work boots talking about their shoes and all and hard use folders are the crossover work-sneaker!! which the sneaker world hates!

True. However, I think many knife nuts would also be surprised by the ease of carry and what can still be accomplished with a smaller knife.

A frequent, if misplaced, criticism of slipjoints is that slipjoints aren't good for prying. My intended point is that while prying probably won't break a "hard use" folder, it still isn't a great prybar, as knives in general don't make good prybars. And especially folding knives, at that.

I think we are all aware of what size knives can do what.

Any links to any posts bashing slipjoints?

This is just gratuitous bashing because hard use folders are not meant to be pry bars and calling them sharpened pry bars is a way to denigrate them and present them in a ridiculous light.

I don't believe I've heard much in the way of slip joint bashing, but there is the occasional person coming around explaining how a locking function adds a level of safety for those less than careful times. Ever since I got my first slip joint, I haven't gone without one except for those times where it might be confiscated. Most useful tool in my EDC, only second to a flashlight.

Very few people have a problem with slipjoints. I own them and I use them mostly SAK's). But if a knife is sold as a locking folder, I expect the lock to be strong and dependable.

Personally I don’t see a drawback to a folder with a lock.

I find opening and closing them easier than with most slipjoints.

So for me there is no urgent reason to buy a slip joint, when I can buy a similar knife with a lock.

I'm not trying to be a dork

That's a hard sell given your posts and all the edits here. :p

You are missing the point of hard use folders, or are you a "crypto" Cold Steel hater?

*blah blah* ... pry open a real crate with it and I'll shut up mkay ;) :p

Ex-freakin-zactly sez me.

If you had a point what would it be? ^^

People would be talking about their grandpappy's sebenza if they had existed 80 years ago. Our grandfather's used slipjoints because that's what was available. Go to the auction site and look up knife lots. See how well they held up. Also, just because some people like knives with a lock doesn't mean they can't figure out which side of the blade cuts. It doesn't just seem like it's more secure, it is. You don't always need that extra layer of security, but if someone likes it more power to em.

Slipjoints = Good
Modern Locking Knives = Good

So I keep a foot planted firmly in both camps - pretty much everyday..

To me, well made slipjoints with carefully crafted handles are useful works of art. At the same time, quality tactical knives are simply awesome.

Hello. My name is Steve and I'm addicted to knives........

To see how fast he can get it to snap shut, lol.

I would never bash slipjoints. They're great knives. As hard use though, aparrently you've never slipped and had one snap on your finger? I have... If I'm planning on using a knife for a serious chore, I'd prefer it lock, and I keep my digits. Slipjoints certainly have their place though, and I have a certain fondness for them as well.

Don't know where you heard it, but I've never heard any slipjoint bashing:confused:

I love them, and think most of us true knife nuts like many types of knives.....well except for those tacticool ones:p
