what's with everyone bashing slipjoints?

As you should. Locks give an inflated sense of security that sometimes lets us down. That's what I meant when I posted that slippies teach us to use knives wisely. By "teach," I mean you get some pretty rapid didactic feedback when you make poor choices. :D

Do you mean like spine whacking?:D

I don's really understand the OP's post. I have not seen any threads bashing slipjoints. Correct me if I am wrong, but to me one of the most well known pocket knife in the world is the SAK: which is a slipjoint.

Only slightly more retarded than spine whack tests on anything else, really...

Other than the basic, tap it on a tabletop to check basic lock up, type spine whack.

That is the only type of spine whack I do. None of that Cold Steel video stuff, thats insane.

I think we can put this puppy to rest.

1. Slipjoints aren't being indiscriminately bashed by people the experts who use them, and their alternatives, namely locking folders.

2. If you encounter a large number of people who are bashing slipjoints, it probably has something to do with their lack of experience and knowledge.

Do you have any other questions that you need addressed?

TC

PS
I apologise if my last post in this thread was difficult to understand. I had recently opened up a bottle of bourbon... All I was trying to say is, "Slipjoints can be used hard."

I get the feeling like I'm in a conversation with some people arguing about sneakers and work boots talking about their shoes and all and hard use folders are the crossover work-sneaker!! which the sneaker world hates!

If I am following what you are saying here - you get the feeling that the people that like slip joints hate hard use folders? That isn't the impression that I get from reading this thread, or from the forum in general.

Unless I'm mistaken about:
work boots = fixed blades
sneakers = slip joints
crossover work-sneakers = hard use folders

okay, well i'm not saying that this forum is bashing slip joints (do you really think i'd think you guys would????). i see some rarely on EDCforums, a lot on the web, sometimes more recently on youtube (don't get started).

yes, it occurred to me that spine whacking a slipjoint was retarded....after i did it:rolleyes:. i didn't do it as hard as i could- as in swing as hard as you can of course.

also, i posted this simply because i wanted to see your opinion-which if it's anywhere is probably more knowledgeable then lot's of other random internet places.

yes, it was pretty laughable, and i knew i'd get some guys going "what the hell is the insane guy going about?" (i'm not really sure either:D)

anyways, i've seen many people thinking that slip joints are not heavy use knives, and i think it's from so many "Experts" giving a bunch of reasons on how slipjoints have failed, and why a locking knife is better, blah blah blah.

anyhow, it's getting late, i've just read 5 pages of posts, you've probably realized i'm not all that sane, and so i probably haven't posted everything.

Although slipjoints in modest steels are more common, there are slipjoints in the good stuff if you look around a little.

A typical EDC combo for me:

As has already been stated. Slipjoints have been used hard for hundreds of years. They've found a Roman Swiss Army style knife so maybe for thousands of years. They're are awesome.
