What's with the CR Sebenza?

Heh, they do now! I've been sending them to Tom Krein. ;)

DaveH uses his newly ground Sebenza to slice his way through AllenC's defenses. Luckily enough, AllenC used the money he saved from not buying a Sebenza to buy a kevlar-and-steel puncture resistant vest!!

AllenC mounts an offensive campaign, but is ineffective!!

I think it is a status symbol kind of thing. Like people driving Hummers. No one "needs" a Hummer, and in reality it is a white elephant, but it costs a lot to buy and maintain. If the people like pissing away money, they will. It makes them feel superior to "the rest of us".

Same logic goes with the Sebenza cult. They can afford $350+ for a knife and it makes them feel good.

That's an opinion, but one could also say those whom can't afford,or choose not to pay this amount(the Seb, not the Hummer) say things just like this to make themselves feel good as well. Justifying jealousy or opinions by making the other guy out to be the one with issues is pretty common as well.
And let's be honest, I doubt there are many here whom genuinely couldn't afford to spend $330, if they really, really wanted to come up with the funds. Some might be able to do it a very short time, while others might take a fair bit of penny-pinching, but it's not expensive like so many other items of real quality.

Oh for God's sake.... You mean this place still has Users who have no freaking clue about the difference between a Production made vs. Custom made knife??

Hey, why does a BMW M3 cost more than a Ford Focus? After all, they both run on an engine, have four wheels and take me from point A to point B. Why is one more expensive? What am I missing?! :jerkit:

Interesting. Well now, I wouldn;t dare underestimate your knowledge and understanding of knives.....or of others.

Big Al!

That Buck 110 is one of the nicest knives I've seen in some time! I love the 110, but NEVER envisioned it with scales like that! Let's hear about who did that for you.

I think Bucks custom shop cna do buffalo horn scales like that if I am not mistaked...If you send yours in they can also switch out the blade with a brand new BG-42 one!!!! At a certain price of course...:D

that's funny, because the M3 is not a custom built auto.

stretch:

The custom 110 with Bg-42 blade is the deal of the century. I have one with elk scales and it's nice.

I saw that! I liked the textured Buffalo horn like AllenC has, the brown elk, and the sambar stag! I had to go look at the Alpha Hunter too - 154CM satin with Elk Horn or Maple Burl!!! :D

A couple of months ago, I got to play with a Chris Reeve Sebenza for nearly an hour. I scrutinized it the best I could, then opened and closed it over and over and over. The basic Sebenza is a minimum $350 knife. Now, I'm not bashing the Sebenza, just asking.....what's the story here?

I've got a Bencmade mini-Skirmish. It costs about $135. Now, argue if you will, but BM is making some of the finest knives out there for an affordable price. S30V steel, 6AL-4V-Titanium, nice pins, high-quality washers, all the exact same as the Sebenza. What's the story here?

I saw NO DIFFERENCE in makers quality between the two. What am I missing?
You are missing that $200 bushing in the handle......

The CR has a bushing instead of just washers and a pin. This is absolutely a better way to make a folder. Is it 200 bucks better?

The CR has a framelock. This is a strong mechanism, but about as low tech as you can get. It is not fast or particularly safe to close. The Axis lock is ultra high tech compared to a framelock [or linerlock].

The shape of the handle is about as un-ergonomic as they come.

I keep thinking about buying a Sebenza but can't convince myself that it is really anything special, or fun.

Titainium handles are nothing new anymore. Heck some manufactures even shape themto fit your hand! What a concept!
S30V steel is mainstream now, so that isn't a selling point.

If I want a bullet proof knife for survival, I'll use a quality fixed blade, and I have several for that purpose. I also have a Ritter RSK Mk1 survival folder which I can easily and safely close with one hand, and believe me, in a survival situation, you may only have one good hand to work with.

If Chris ever makes a bushing blade folder with a strong unique. fast one handed detent, I'm there so fast it'll make his head spin. Alas, he sells every low tech high quality knife he makes, so I'm not holding my breath.

I only have my opinion to offer but during 23 years of Army service I carried a Gerber EZout, a Spyderco Military, a Benchmade AFCK, a CRKT M21, a CRK Sebenza in BG42, and several others that didn't leave a lasting impression. I stopped carrying the others because the Sebenza is the only one I felt comfortable carrying and using when it counted. I'm picky about my personal gear. I bought it because it is made of high quality materials, is maintainable, and works every time. If something happened to it, I knew I could call Chris Reeve and it would be put back into service. I did not have the same confidence in the other knife companies whose product I carried – briefly.

Just out of curiosity, how much do Ken Onion customs start at? Anyone have one? How would that compare to the sebbie? KO customs are by faaaar my favs but I have to sell my SVT Lightning so Im not even gonna look for any high end knives for a while. :(

I have no idea what they start at but I have seen soe of them have prices tage of $900, $1200, $1800.........So they are a bit expensive...lol...Not sure if those were special ones or if they average at @ 1000?

I very recently got my first Sebenza. In fact, when I first saw it & handled it, I was NOT impressed. I thought, "Man, I need to get my mini-Skirmish back." But after playing with it for a day or two, the nice things about the Seb came out.

Now, is it worth 2-3 times the money of a MS? That's entirely up to you. I heard & read about some saying a Seb is a Bradley Alias, made by Benchmade, no less. But really, a an Alias is a Seb copy & like the MS, isn't quite the quality as the Seb.

As to worth, it depends. If you NEED that $350-400+ to live off of, then no. But lets face it, a Seb (Or even a MS, Alias, etc.), are knife enthusiasts thing. Someone, just looking to get a pocket knife & not have a collection of knives (No matter how small it is), are going to spend the money for ANY of the listed knives.

You "average Joe" just is not going to spend more than a $100 or so. So, literally is it worth it? No, it's not.

But, I didn't spend the time & money that I have to buy/trade-up to just get a copy of something. I wanted to have THE knife, the one that everyone else is copying. People can say that I'm justifying my purchase/trade, but you can make a case that they're justifying why not to get a Seb.

The bottom line is, you & I don't NEED a Sebenza, mini-Skirmish, or a Bradley Alias, for that matter. All any of us NEEDS, is a decent quality folder. If people didn't spend money to get nicer ones with "extras", whether that's extra quality, extra features, or both, we'd all be using Buck 110s or something similar. But we don't, do we?

From what I understand, this type of question/thread happens every so often. Personally, this is the first one I've participated in. It has been interesting, though.

Bearcut, Low-tech and simplicity will win 100% of the time in a so called survival type situation. As soon as you start adding bells/whistles and gimmicky add ons, thats when weak points are created.

I think someone already mentioedn how the sebenza is so simple....and thats one of its great attributes, the fact that all of the screws use the same size allen key is great! I thought about this today and looked through my knives and seeign that in EVERY single knife I have that has screw contruction the pivot screw is a different size than the body or scale screws...Most of which are torx screws...I don't have a problem with torx scres sicne I bought a torx set...but the ONLY reason I did was to use on ym knvies, I foudn out a long time ago that for the most part higher end knives have torx screws on them...So buyign the $8 torx bit set was a great investment, lol...but if your just gettign started in knives its hard to use them, most people I know anyway never even heard of a torx bit...and when I give my friend old knives of mine they have to give them back for a cleaning since they don't own torx bits either...So not onyl does the sebenza use a simple allen key, whcih most people have already (even if they don't every sebenza coems with one) they use simpel contruction...lets see a parts list...

-1 blade
-2 handle scales
-2 washers
-1 bushing
-2 body screws
-1 spacer piece
-1 pocket clip
-1 pocket clip screw
-2 pivot screw parts, front and backing

.......thats all...seems like alot in a list form like that but take parat your favorite knife and count the parts...and the whole thgin can be taken apart with one allen key provided with every knife! Can't beat it if you ask me...

I will bet that it will onyl be a matter of tiem before other compnies use a bushing systemj in their folders...wait and see, Chris Reeve made the framelock popular, as well as Titanium and S30V...that seems to be the standard now for higher end knives...Ti frames with S30V blades...I know that when another company starts usign bushings in their folders I will certainly give them a try too! And I am sure it will be much easier on the wallet...
