What's your cut-off point?

Talking about cheap knives, I started thinking we all have a cut-off point.
The point in price we are unwilling to spend past. We just don't see the gain past a certain price point.
This tends to rise upwards with most of us, as we get deeper into our hobbies and passions, we become more informed. (and I've found it's like this for everything I like, not just knives) We start out buying knives that cost little and before we know it we are buying more and more expensive ones.
Right now I'm at the 200 dollar plus mark. This is discount not retail price. Those blades go for around the 300 dollar mark, retail.
So where do you draw the price line? (Keeping in mind the price you can get a knife for not retail)

For me it' s generally also around 200$. But I did order a CRK Lg Sebenza 21 a few days ago, but I guess (hope...?:D) that was an exception. Generally it is around 200.

For production knives I'd say any more than a few hundred is pushing it.
I would definitely be willing to pay more for customs though.

I don't really have one, if it's worth the money. :D

I guess I would say $1,000 would be my limit to pay for a blade, but then that would be a fixed blade. :)

Really depends on the knife and maker, I have spent 2400, but from most custom makers the limit is 750 or so. I have not bought a production knife since joining this forum. :o

I currently don't see myself spending more than about $2500 because that's what the most expensive blades on my current list cost, and I can't imagine anything coming along that I want and costs even more.
I am not into fancy stuff, gold and pearl and ivory on a knife mean nothing to me so unless someone convinces me that this sword or knife is even better and more impressive than a MOAB or an AK I don't see me spending more than 2.5k.

But you never know. :D

A person could probably get by just fine with a Spyderco Tenacious folder and a Ka-Bar USMC fixed blade.

I've gone $327 +shipping. No Regrets.

I own one $400 knife (custom) and two that I've paid over $200 for. I have probably two dozen that sold for between $100-$200 and a whole sack full that were between $50-$100. Most of my knives below $50 are peanuts or small stockmen from Schrade, Camillus or John Primble that I've picked up here and there.

So I guess the whole point of all that rambling is that $200 is my cutoff point under most circumstances. The few times I've gone over were for very specific things I've wanted (and I've kinda regretted one of them).

about 200$.in 70s got in collector knives damacus bowies top end folders, etc.hit some hard times &got 30% on the dollar.forum was not born yet so customer base was much smaller.every item has only so much intrinsic value.even blue collar cats such as myself can sell a gun or work 80 hr. week & jump for a 200$ blade.if you get a good popular piece later you want have to sell same for dirt.however the customer base for 1500 to 3000$ knife is much smaller.besides i look at function ist.most knifes when passing the 500$ mark we start to get into [art]status.market shrinks greatly.

Currently, the most I have paid for a custom knife is $1800, so far.

i go with quality and what i like, that way no matter what the cost, you do not have to worry about any regrets, period. buying knives as collection pieces to make money will break you. only once in a while will you run up on something that you can make money with. and it is hard for me to turn one lose, because if i bought it, i like it alot...

currently the most spent on blade is about a grand.

Not fair for me to say right now. I didn't get back into knives until I was laid off from my IT job (figures). Needless to say, I'm currently working at Home Depot and have taken a huge pay cut. My "cut-off" figure right now is well under $100. If (when) I get back into my career field and make the $ I used to make, probably <= $200.

Honestly, I could be perfectly happy with my Delica, Mini Grip, Trance, Browning Ice Storm, etc for EDC.

My Kabar/Beckers would just fine as a camping/hiking knife too.

I don't see myself ever owning a Busse or Sebbie.

I've bought one knife that cost 400 and I just couldn't see it.
Returned it and bought two I'd wanted for a long time for the same money. They are the B/M 610 Ruckus and a ZT-0300.
I have to feel satisfied with what I buy and it just seems to me I'm getting a lot with those two. And this is all a matter of pure opinion. (as well as my money outlay)
I've reached a point where I sell off my knives brands besides Spyderco (which I collect) to fund purchase of non-Spyderco blades that I fancy.
