What's your cut-off point?

I've bought one knife that cost 400 and I just couldn't see it.
Returned it and bought two I'd wanted for a long time for the same money. They are the B/M 610 Ruckus and a ZT-0300.
I have to feel satisfied with what I buy and it just seems to me I'm getting a lot with those two. And this is all a matter of pure opinion. (as well as my money outlay)
I've reached a point where I sell off my knives brands besides Spyderco (which I collect) to fund purchase of non-Spyderco blades that I fancy.

When are you getting the ZT 0300. :D

Talking about cheap knives, I started thinking we all have a cut-off point.
The point in price we are unwilling to spend past. We just don't see the gain past a certain price point.
This tends to rise upwards with most of us, as we get deeper into our hobbies and passions, we become more informed. (and I've found it's like this for everything I like, not just knives) We start out buying knives that cost little and before we know it we are buying more and more expensive ones.
Right now I'm at the 200 dollar plus mark. This is discount not retail price. Those blades go for around the 300 dollar mark, retail.
So where do you draw the price line? (Keeping in mind the price you can get a knife for not retail)

Consider that the manufacturer sells to the distributor at 75% or less of the “suggested” retail price. The distributor sells to the merchant at 50% or less of the manufactures “suggested” retail. The manufacturer is “always” looking for ways to cut manufacturing cost and increase profit. This is not speculation this is accurate fact.

The smaller knife makers do not buy the quantity as the manufacturers so it cost those more to make a knife from the same materials and they pass that cost to the consumer.

A question of mine is how the manufacturer and smaller knife maker calculate the “suggested” retail price. Some knife makers go further and control price and distribution and “suggested” retail price.

It seems to me as an investment it makes sense to purchase a true one of a kind custom item.

I view knives as tools first and look for value rather than collectability. I buy through my father from a distributor so I pay 50% of suggested retail but even then I look for deals from the distributor.

Its just something to think about?

Due at the post office tomorrow morning. (I don't work Mondays so I'm up there to get it first thing) The Ruckus may be there, too. I didn't get tracking numbers on that one.

Sounds good, make sure to post pictures and let us know what you think :D

I've found it makes sense for me to try to buy Spydercos as something that at least can be sold and maybe at a profit. (maybe not depends on the models demand and if it's cut from production later). I don't even try to resell my Spydercos, I just feel good that I can collect a few and they probably would sell easy and I'd not lose money on them.
I don't know enough about customs to even try to invest. I've seen a lot I thought I'd like to own, if they wasn't so expensive.
The B/M Ruckus I've always liked in the full sized model. The axis lock and the grip, along with the large pointed blade is just one of a kind to me. (also it very well could go the way of the Skirmish another I really like a lot)The ZT-0300 with it's G-10 on one side and it's Titanium on the other, along with it's heavy thick frame-lock and state of the art switchblade like assisted opening. I really like all the features on both of these and feel really good about buying both.

For me it's around the $110.00 I paid for a RC6. Though if a windfall of $$ came my way I would certainly use it for something more expensive, but for hard earned income that will be it.

The most I will spend on a factory knife would be a Busse or Sebenza. Both well worth the price IMO. I've only went over $1000 once for a factory knife.

$1200 is the most I've paid for a Custom.

I dought I'll ever spend that again since I'm getting away from buying for collection only. If I buy now, its likely to be a user. Just ordered a Dozier that will be made to my liking, at around $400.
I'm not getting any younger, and my only daughter has no interest in knives, so that $400 mark will prob be my new cap for a user. I plan to sell most of my non users in the next two/three years.

I would have to say about $500 right now is about the most I am willing to pay for a knife when I am able to get the funds together. Too many other bills right now to get really extravagant.

I don't mean to be a downer but I don't think you'll be happy with the ZT. It's just so clunky and big compared to the Spydercos you are used to. The blade is shorter than a Military but it weighs so much more.

Don't get me wrong: it's a very well made knife and probably the strongest production folder on the market. It's just overkill if you ask me. I bought one and only kept it a month or two.

 You sold your Umnumzaan?

Let us know how you like the Ruckus and the ZT. I guarantee the ZT300 will be like nothing you've ever felt before. Assisted 8oz folder. :)

No I didn't sell it, I looked at it 5 min and packed it up and returned it. I just didn't care for it. Many do and that's their privilege. It was a nice knife, but for 400 I just didn't get it.
I have had a ZT0200 and I loved it, but I bought the combo edge (it was early in the model's introduction all I could find) so I sold that and always wanted another, in plain edge. So, I got the top of the line instead.
I don't mind the weight as I carry hiking in a belt sheath and it's not all that much compared to the handgun I always carry. I like big tough folders, for hiking.

I read in an issue of Blade that Kevin Jones' cutoff point was $10,000!

That that is one SERIOUS collector folks!!;)

I must love the knife to spend $150 and I have to be absolutely crazy about it to spend $200 and up.

Yeah you got that right, they really are in a class by themselves. :)

You will love the ZT 0300, it is a tank of a knife and the workmanship is top rated.

First quality all the way.

nO WAY i CAN JUSTIFY MORE THAN $200. That is because of income limitations. If I had money to burn the sky would be the limit. I once held a $30 000 katana in my hand and would have happily bought it if I were a millionaire.
Ain't likely though.

Oh I know exactly what you mean. :D:thumbup:

So far $900 on a Burn custom. My next higher $$$ knife will probably be a custom Emerson. The most I've spent on any one thing was $6400 for my Rolex. Small cookies compared to other folks.

If you like the ZT, and ever find yourself with another $400 to blow, check out the SMF.
