Hey guys, I was wondering what your go to war knife, maybe a fixed a folder combo.
I'm going to be joining the army, have been putting a lot of thought recently towards what my ideal combo might be.
Ahead of time Thanks to any prior or active duty military members.

KaBar D2 Extreme, Leatherman Wave and Cold Steel Recon 1. Seems like a nice balance of size and weight and capability.

You may not be allowed to carry a knife for a while. You might be better off holding off until you know what you're going to be doing.

In the end, a good multi tool or one of the newer, large, locking SAK's will probably be the most useful.

While I haven't been to war, If I had to pick a folder to trust my life to it would be a Recon 1 as well. It's just tough as nails all around. As far as a fixed blade I'd pick something in 3V more than likely. So like a Survive Knives GSO 5.1 or something similar to that.

I once asked my dad this same question. He's not a knife guy, but spent over 20 years being deployed all over. His answer: "Leatherman Wave." He used his for everything. Thank you in advance for your service, and good luck!

Years ago, long after I got out of the military, I got my first Leatherman multi-tool.

My immediate thought was: "Damn, I wish I had one of these when I was in the military."

So, if they called me up and told me I was going back in, I'd get a Leatherman of some variety... probably a Wave, or maybe a Wingman or Sidekick (inexpensive).

Just got off the phone with Green Beret buddy. He took a Benchmade AFO on lots of deployments, both as a .Mil and as a civilian contractor. He says AFO.

You've been a member here since 2008... so you should have a grand idea as to what you want. Good luck to you.

We have to mingle with the locals to win hearts and minds, so some units prohibit fixed blades because soldiers have been stabbed by people grabbing their knives. I would recommend a multitool. Pliers and screwdrivers are very handy.

Yep, took the D2 Extreme Fighting/Utility Knife and a standard Leatherman(still have both) years ago. Today I'd go with a Leatherman Mut and my Big Chris PD1 camp knife. Production fixed would be Survive! GSO6 in 3V.

I'm a USMC veteran of Desert Shield/Storm. If I had to do it all over again I'd take a Treeman 8" dagger on my belt, and a Recon 1 in my front pants pocket.

I'll second the comment to hold off on your purchase if $ is an important factor. Once you are in, you will have access to discounts on gear. As military personnel you can sign up for pro deals through companies like promotive. I used to get %50-%60 off benchmade, spyderco, kershaw/zt... Hope my suggestion isn't a forum violation. My apologies if it is.

As for knives, I really like my Emerson commander and my ESEE 4. The Emerson has tough steel, comfortable handle, and easy maintenance. Also, I prefer a liner lock because you cant jam it by squeezing the knife like you can with a frame lock. ESEE has an amazing warranty and will replace or repair your knife regardless of how you damaged it, so you don't have to worry about breaking and being out a lot of dough. If you go with ESEE be sure you are getting one with 1095 steel. They do not provide the same warranty with the other steel they use ( i think 440 or something like that).

Best of luck and let us know what you choose!

I really appreciate everyone's advice. But I know what blades ill be getting it's just trying to find them haha. Busse boss jack or SJTAC and snf coyote g10 drop point. I really just wanted to know what you guys would carry if you were in a war.

I've talked with many soldiers who have been deployed and always hear "a multi tool and a good fixed blade"

If i was enlisting i would either bring a busse (or one of its off shoots), esee, becker or even a cold steel depending on the budget for a fixed. Hell even schrade seems to be popping out the odd hone run here and there with its current line up.

For a folder to bring? Id go with something from cold steel if lock strength and long term easy maintenance are a concern. If your folder is just going to serve the purpose of general cutting tasks then a frame lock, or even a flipper would be out of the question. Some might argue go avoid bearings but i feel they are fine as long as its a caged bearing and not a loose system. With that in mind i would be a little more discriminating with a folder. Cold steel love em or hate em ( i lean towards hate) have a really good factory making knives for them and even if you cant stand the marketing the knives impress especially now with premium steels available. A few options from zt would be good like the 0909 with the manual bearing flipper and a g10 grippy handle and steel heavy duty liner lock its plenty strong. Also i might prefer a frame lock where my grip is constantly reinforcing the lock engagement. Striders supposedly are good military knives but i have no experience with those really. If i were you i would really invest in a good knife in each category. The best you can afford. A fixed blade inwould worry most about as that is what i would be relying on unless its just a really small chore.

My cousin is in the Army and I was going to pick up a TOPS HOG 4.5 for him to take East. On the Advise of the Maker, GySgt David "Norseman" Williams, I picked up an Leatherman Surge for him instead. I believe GySgt Williams said he'd never go out without a "Force Multiplier". My cousin is in EOD and Leatherman makes a version of the Surge specifically for that.

I gave the Surge to my cousin along with a prybar and he said the Surge would definitely see more use than any knife.

My BIL was issued a nimravus fixed blade and and auto presidio. He heard I was into knives and the first time I went to his house he brought them out for me to check out.

The Presidio was beat to hell, tip rounded off, scratches everywhere. The Nimravus looked like it had never been out of the sheath...

Strider RW-1 for the folder definitely , someone could get very stupid with this knife and still not break it.
