I was reading a recent thread last week about some interest in the Schrades Kitchen Cutlery line of knives so I thought I would post a few pics of what I have. I probably should take a little Flitz polish to the brass though.

Now "THERE'S" an unusual addition to your Schrade collection! All too often we forget that Schrade also made kitchen knives, and I suspect these may appreciate in value because of this. (Mainly due to the fact that most people didn't think to collect them) ;)

Chuck, do you know which pattern # this blue bone one is ?
I know well how much time and energy small children require(and later demand), but every moment you spend today tending to their needs, comes back to you as future riches many times over. And quite likely you'll soon have 2 little knife collectors laying claim to some of your knives.

Roland,

To me it seems to be based off of the 897UH pattern. Oh, and you are dead on with the "little knife collectors" comment. I was on the couch opening the mail yesterday with my old 8OT and my three year old wanted to hold the blue one. I handed it to her, closed of course, then she wanted my old timer too. I closed it and handed it over to her and you would have thought she won the lottery. Grinning from ear to ear she clutched one in each hand and I had to nearly pry them away from her. Oh yeah, her time is coming!

Chuck, that's neat. I've had the same experience with my daughter, now 5 1/2, and up to 40 knives that she simply has kept, claiming they are hers, after being allowed to "look at" (handle) each. I think this understanding of ownership is in the female genes.

My kids male or female, have zero interest in knives. sniff. I'm envious of you guys!!

Here's an unusual knife I just purchased. Appears to be a Schrade Walden period contract from Schrade, for Shapleigh.
1950s-1960s maybe - any info would be appreciated!
Unsharpened, uncarried, unpolished - as close to original as you are going to get!
Wiped with a chamois, and lightly oiled. It has a few tiny specks, and some patina.
It has hints of the various Imperial/Schrade/Ulster/Camillus production methods. Interesting piece.

Charlie, I saw your post over in the traditionals forum and it still makes me sick! :D I'm so envious of your collection. Thanks for sharing all of your wonderful knives and keen knowledge with us "common folk". You are truly in the upper echelon of collectors.

Chuck

Now that's a Super BIG WOW ! A 4 blade Cattle knife with a superb deep Clip blade. Izzit big ? 3 3/4" ? I would like to own this one for sure. I'll have to look in "Cat. E" to see if i can find the SCC version. Congratulations Charlie. Superb score.
roland

Cat. E? Wha's dat?

Chuck

Chuck I'm sure Roland means catalog E. It's a reprint of Schrade Cut Co catalogs and supplements from 1926 to 1938. A.G.Russell had them done, but they are long out of print.
And I'm sorry you are not feeling well!:p

:D:D

Charlie - You mentioned you thought it was made in the 1950's or 1960's. The punch blade looks like one from a utility knife. Wondering if Shapleigh offered a utility knife during the same era? I would guess this knife is 3 5/8" closed, and still oogling the stubby clip blade. I do not recall seeing one that thick. Or is it the same blade you might find on a barlow?

Chuck - Ever visited the Schrade collectors site? There are catalogs for a lot of years, beginning with the legendary 1928 Roland and Charlie refer to. Great old illustrations...

I looked Roland, and did not find one quite like this, although there is a great selection of cattle knives in the 1928.

Done it again Charlie!! Mighty fine knife!! Right from the classic Schrade Walden stable. perspective looks misleading, the size of the spey against the punch makes it look a very big blade, or a small punch, either way. I'm guessing that the spey for instance is about the same size as on an 8OT?

Nice find!!

Russell

Charlie, amazing knife! Your scans are much clearer than the originals, quite the engineering feat getting all those nail nics on the mark side. Roland, I'm pretty sure that knife won't be found in Cat. E, although there are some similar, looks like possibly a Shapleigh exclusive.

Eric

Eric as Hal says nothing like this in the SCC catalogues.. Shows part of the decline in the USA cutlery business. Long ago a merchant could order a unique knife from the manufacturer. An existing frame and scales likely would be used, but the rest might be unique to that order. Later (beginning maybe ~ 40 yrs. ago) a merchant's special order became merely a standard offering with different markings & maybe shield along with an etch.
Along with another collector friend i have developed an interest in the Cattle pattern and have begun collecting a few. If you have Bernard Levine's Guide to Knives you can see that there is a range of handle shapes, sizes and number of blades in this grouping. Makes for great "knifin" (used as in "fishing"). Charlie's DE is the nicest i have seen.
roland

Hal, the knife is 1/32 shy of 3 3/4" - longer than you would expect.

Mike Silvey wrote "Pocket Knives of the United States Military" In it, he pictures three-blade Cattle knives, many without shields, which he theorizes were issued to the Army Air Corps pilots during WWII.
I wonder if this could be one of them.
