What's your method for cleaning tape snot?

Does nobody work on cars anymore? Brake cleaner is my go-to gunk destroyer....I keep probably six or eight cans of the stuff stashed away around the garage and shops. And, as far as food is concerned, I may not live to be 65, but, dammit, I can stop on a dime!

Mineral spirits. I use the Gamsol brand, which is odorless. Works way better than rubbing alcohol.

I went down to the hardware store the other day and bought a quart of odorless mineral spirits.

It was definitely not odorless.

Now either I have the ability to smell things which normal humans cannot, or I am a victim of false advertising. Or perhaps in this case, "odorless" must not mean what it's supposed to mean.

Yeah I think they use that word pretty loosely in marketing. Ever tried "odorless" insect repellent?

It was a slow news day here in town…
Wow, this thread stil running.....
Impressive.
If not mentioned yet I use strong paint thinner in most cases.

Does this thread stil has a point? I mean, who on earth would ask on a forum how to clean a blade?
A guy with too much spare time? A bored guy needing some conversation? An ignorant guy without a clue how to do anything?
Just guessing....
Just clean your blade as any other tool you have (if you have). If water and soap does not do it use something stronger like alcohol or gasoline or forbidden chemicals you stil have in your garage.

Mineral spirits.

Holy crap, dude. I bought a used step ladder yesterday. It had some weird sticky goop on it. I got most of it off with brute force, but there was this hard residue left behind. I couldn't get it out with goo gone or acetone or 70% isopropyl alcohol, which usually works. I poured some mineral spirits on it and it just dissolved away instantly. Now I have a nice looking sturdy step ladder which only cost me five dollars and little work to clean it up.

Mineral spirits are no joke, huh? Are they toxic at all? If I use mineral spirits on my SAK, will it dissolve my celidor scales? Will it strip the oil from the pivots?

Like most solvents, white spirits are moderately toxic. Probably best to use gloves. I don't, but probably should. I don't think it's an issue for occasional use. It can cause problems people who are exposed to it constantly, like painters.

As far as using it on celidor scales ... 🤷‍♂️. If you want to try it, I'd definitely test it out on a small spot on the side of the scale before wiping it down.

I have several sets of old junk scales which were pulled off SAKs that I used for parts in custom builds. Some are just broken or failed experiments at modification... I can put some mineral spirits on one of those. I actually happen to have the box out that has them inside... I can do it right now...

Okay, click the spoiler button to find out what happened.
It doesn't dissolve them! Very surprising. I expected to see the celidor melt just the same as if it was exposed to acetone or isopropyl alcohol. It seems just fine. Totally unaffected.

That's good to know.

edit: Real world results. I had to cut up a cardboard box this afternoon. The main blade of my SAK got covered in tape gunk. I put some mineral spirits on a paper towel and all of the gunk instantly wiped right off. Zero effort. The blade is now cleaner than I've ever seen it, since I first built the SAK out of parts from filthy used knives. It's literally squeaky clean. And shiny. Just from a few wipes of a paper towel.

I wouldn't do this to a knife that I use for cutting up food though.

Solvents are weird. Mineral spirits are great for most knife gunk, but rubbing alcohol is way better for removing Sharpie.

I use acetone to remove permanent marker as I find it works best. Isopropyl alcohol works as a great hack if your sharpie is running dry and you need to squeeze a little more use out of it.

My favorite time to degunk.my blade.is while dropping a duece!!!😜
Just plain old pressure and friction with my thumb and of it comes........
