Wheeler's Steel * Stuck in the metal with you

That sounds like a really bad idea to me!

It sounds bad but its not as bad as you think. Acetone will boil around 130-140 degrees Fahrenheit. The only hazard is the fumes are flammable. You cant actually touch a flame to non-boiling acetone in a cup and it will not ignite. The fumes are what are dangerous. If you do it in a well ventilated area its no big deal at all and really makes removing epoxied handles a breeze. It works good without boiling too, but takes a lot longer.

What you are doing by boiling it is creating more fumes than would exist in acetone evaporating normally, which is a danger in itself. These fumes can flow and be ignited by a static discharge. I think I'll pass on boiling acetone.

Thanks again everyone. I just noticed the thread is near 35,000 views... and that's just plain nuts. LOL :)

Yup! Last time I saw its equivalent was with a eye-popping Bruce Bump folder-shooter WIP. Looks like he might have to do another one to reclaim the throne. Well done Nick. Well done indeed!

He's closing in fast on the views for sure. I think on the next one I'm going shave, start working out, oil my body, hire dancing girls and build a rocket launching battle axe.:D

Ya had me up until the body oil. How about you hire dancing girls and oil their bodies up?;)

...and I'm kind of surprised you haven't made a rocket launching battle axe yet.:D

Bruce, didn't you already make one of those a few years ago? :D

Nick,
I have learned more in this one thread than everything else I have ever read about knife making. With your attention to detail, skill level and artistic ability, I would be willing to bet that there isn't a MS knifemaker out there who doesn't respect your work or wouldn't like to own one of your knives. Keep up the great work. Can't wait to see what comes next. Thank You.

Mark, I don't know about that, but I sure appreciate the kind words my friend. :)

I do know there is ONE Ms that wants one of my knives... but he ordered it before he was even a Js!!! :o :foot: ;) :)

Handle shaping got bumped back a bit because I ran out of propane (had to drive to town to get the tanks filled) and HAVE to get the steel finished for the ABS auction knife. As much as I don't want folks here waiting on me... I REALLY REALLY don't want Greg Neely and Bert Gaston tapping their feet!   :)

Hah,

He even remembers the little black-handled, temper-line hunter that made him order it.

See, when you get really old, things from the distant past are more clear than the present.

Well CLEARLY we are not talking about the same situation then, because the guy I'm talking about was looking at a GREEN micarta handled hunter. ;) :p :D

Just for s's & g's, I took a couple quick little videos the other night as I was forging the ABS auction knife to shape that I thought I'd share here because this is exactly what I was talking about on the first page of this thread when I mentioned forging the point of the blade down on the anvil's horn. Just thought a couple of you might be interested in actually seeing what I was trying to explain.

I didn't quite get it done in one heat because this billet of damascus was 3/8" thick at the time (I was experimenting with some patterning stuff) and that's a lot of steel to knock down in one heat by hand. For me anyway.

I also wanted to see if I could actually figure out the video embed thing too ;) LMAO :D
