Wheeler's Steel * Stuck in the metal with you

Nick,

Just watched the forging of the tip videos, and now I am completely re-thinking how I forge tips down.

I can now understand how forging on the horn prevents the dreaded "fish mouth" that most people have to struggle with when forging on the edge of the anvil.

Thanks so much for this enlightenment.

Robert

Thanks Robert :) I'm not sure how well it will work on other anvils. All Nimba anvils are made of a high carbon steel and the entire thing has been heat-treated---- so I have some pretty serious rebound on the horn.

The tip of something small like a hunter, can be forged in with just a handful of hammer blows using a 3-1/2# hammer this way.

Good eye John! That little dip translates to a radiused clip on the finished blade.

He's closing in fast on the views for sure. I think on the next one I'm going shave, start working out, oil my body, hire dancing girls and build a rocket launching battle axe.:D

Just like looking at all your well oiled machines is good enough for me!

Not that anybody's counting, but my other big WIP has 45,000 views ;) :p :D :foot:

Ya, but weren't half of those all us checking back-in over and over month-after-month to see if you'd finished the darn thing?! :p:p:p:p:D

Fantastic work Nick, I'm learning buckets full! THANKS!!!

So how much longer to the next installment on this WIP, or is Nick waiting till the view count gets above 45,000?

I believe the photo/caption compilation plus the unexpected handle issue caused a time overlap with a prior, and more significant commitment.
Patience is a virtue:)

I just found this thread and read it all in one sitting. I would like to thank Lorien and Mr. Wheeler for all the great info and education. The time taken is pretty committed.

I am not a custom knife guy but this thread sure has peaked my interest.

I think that's how he gets the big stats.

As soon as there is a post from somebody asking about the status, we all run to the new post hoping to see if there is any progress

I just fell for that one too. There could be 45 of us clicking in 1000 times each. :D

Sorry folks, wasn't trying to drag anyone along! Lorien knows what's going on--- I think I even posted it right here in the thread too, but also know half of the people looking at this thread aren't actually READING any of the words anyway--- so I wouldn't expect everyone to be up to speed. :p :foot: ;)

The progress on the other piece has been positive, so I think today I'm going to take a quick break from it and TRY to finish off Lorien's handle.

If this new block has a void in it, then I'm going to just wrap it with Gorilla tape!!! :barf: ;)

Touché!

You are a rascal Nick! Take your time. As the frog said, time's fun when you're having flies. We're having a blast!

What! I've been reading what has been written. I would look at the pictures more if you'd get Angi in there helping with some of the work. I am betting that she is the one with the artistic eye helping you to work out the details of your designs. ;)

I am in no hurry I am enjoying the thread too much:D but if the new block has a void don't use gorilla tape, I will send you a bunch of used bike tubes and some tubular glue instead:p

'a truth that sets you free, and accountability that keeps you there'
:thumbup::)Thanks David. That was ape-preciated.

IMHO, this thread is an incredibly informative body of work from a Master Craftsman
Not only have I been reading .......... I've been taking notes ;)

Like so many before me, thanks a million for taking the time to put this together Nick :)

You too Lorien. Thanks  This would all be null and void without your original concept.

:)

Lorien will be getting pics later--- but I'm adding this so all the hungry dogs will know that I didn't abandon the knife or the thread!!! ;) :p :D

The upside of the handle fiasco... is that this new piece of material is MUCH nicer than the last one, which IHMO, was a killer piece of wood! :) I think you'll see that, even though the handle hadn't been hand sanded at the point of making the video .

Ran out of disk space and the video cut off at the end, but that was my cue to stop talking. ;) :o
