Wheeler's Steel * Stuck in the metal with you

Sir, thank you for this GREAT WIP
within 3 hours of sitting in front of my computer and watch the whole knife making.
Thank you for a lot of great pictures and information that you share with us ..
Regards from Croatia

With well over a quarter million views, I'm guessing this one holds the title of most epic WIP thread ever.

Ha! Crazy, right Roger?!?!? Knock'n on the door to 275,000 views--- I remember telling Angi I thought it would be really cool if this thread got to 30K views.... LMAO.

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to go through this thread and to the many folks that have taken the time to thank me for doing it. That makes it worth the time and effort that went into doing it in the first place. :)

This was an awesome WIP and I come to it all the time to check different thought in the past 2 or 3 months. I do have a question though.

What is the benefit of using a torch and softening the shoulder area compared to doing the shoulders before HT? How does it change the function of the knife?

Thanks, I'm glad to hear some guys are still perusing this thread. :)

If you look at page 11, post #202, you'll see why I do it the way I do. Some guys don't do it that way and get great results, but it's what works for me. And Mike Quesenberry....!!! :D

Thanks Nick, I miss understood that. Do you worry about the softer ricasso area?

Truly amazing documentation Nick and Lorien!!!

With Julie's book at the printers I had some real spare time and went
all the way through this WIP Thread (with two long breaks in between).

This got me thinking on how I could add a section in one of my next
books displaying and describing highlights of this custom knife making
detailed process and the continuous interaction between the collector
and the knifemaker....

Take care of all the original-size picture files (backup too!) and keep
the knife in good condition if additional shots of it are needed....

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

This is the best WIP ever. I have it book marked on my computer and look at it often. It has taught me so much! I've got a ton of respect for you Nick. Your attention to detail is inspiring! Thanks a ton for sharing knowledge! Mason

Thank you guys :)

David, that's a very exciting notion!!! :) Unfortunately, the 2,000+ photos I took, as well as the back-up hard drive, were at my parents home and were all destroyed in a house fire on Christmas day 2011. :( :( :(

Well, actually the ones on the computer itself were possibly okay, but it was stolen a few days after the fire.

How depressingly unfortunate! I really have no words....
At least the fact that this thread will last forever is a tiny consolation...

What made me make the above suggestion was the fact that the quality
of your photography was very good and I began to visualize what could be
done with the pictures....

All the best,

Even though I'm not a knifemaker, I learned a lot of tips and tricks and just solid info on doing things with precision from this thread that I could apply to my other hobbies where I tinker with things. Of all the threads I've read since finding Bladeforums, this one is by far my favorite.

Nick, I guess I have only one more question that I hope you could shed light on for me. When you are drilling the hole into the handle block, how do you account for the curvature of the tang? I see you scribed some strait lines but didn't mention them. Do you just drill strait all the way down and then use the broach in the selected spots to get the tang to fit?

Would you say that the hole is over size?

Mr. Wheeler, Mr. Darom.....if this thread were to be summarised in bookform....I'd have no problem laying down money for it. Even if someone were to compile all the pictures and comments into PDF form I'd have no problem paying for that.

Instead I'll have to settle for just going through it page by page again and again.

Are you kidding me my far away friend! I have been all over this thread for a long time! I want you to get a wider angle lense so I can get a better look at your shop and some of your special tooly bits. To be honest mate, fantastic thread, very well done! Outstanding.
Cheers Keith

I have summarized this thread into a simple PDF book. It is big: 363 pages packed with photographs translate into 67Mb of data. Please PM me for a link.

I have PM'd Nick about the book roughly a month ago, but got no reply, so I assume it'd be OK to start distributing it (free, obviously) unless he says otherwise. Also, there might be a few typos and errors, I do apologize for those in advance.

Thanks,
Al

While I appreciate what it appears you are doing, I personally would not have chosen to compile and release something like this without getting solid permission first, at the very least. But that's just me.

Additionally, the thread itself was a collaborative effort and I don't recall being contacted by anyone regarding redistribution in a different form. Yes, Nick provided the pictures and text, but I host the photos and posted them. Some of the text is mine, and for what it's worth, I edited all of it. All photos are on my photobucket account. This thread would not exist if I didn't start it. The shear quantity of information relied on teamwork- I'm not trying to blow my horn when I say that.

I personally would prefer that, until Nick sees fit to publish this information further, people who have an interest in this thread and its contents be referred to Bladeforums, since there is a strong possibility they might further support the forum that made this thread possible in the first place.

I have no idea who you are, nor do I understand why you feel entitled to do what you are doing. But it's your life and I am not going to tell you what to do. However, for the sake of propriety, respect and protocol, I hope that you will decide to do what is most right.

Theoretically, if Nick were to decide that he wanted to publish this info and try to make some money off his hard work here, your efforts might screw him. I'm pretty sure you don't want that.

Please think this through, and pm me if you want to discuss the matter further.

thank you.
No worries.

Thanks Lorien and nick! one of the best WIP I've seen ever. each time I read it I learn something new! Excellent design, job and execution.
