Where Should I Go In Texas?

June is hot - I'd stay the hell out of Texas. Especially East Texas where the humidity can drive one to suicide.

The Guadalupes are nice, but go early in the Spring or Late Fall. Spring is a nice time for Big Bend.

I've never been to the big Texas cities other than driving through, but statistically they have high crime and pollution rates - some of the worst in the US.

Colorado and Wyoming are nice in June. Might be a good time to go to the Northwest?

Happy Vacation,
Bob

I live in Texas near Houston. If you want to see the desert, visit the Big Bend. If you want history and the "Mexican flavor" visit the Riverwalk and Alamo in San Antonio. It may be hard to see both in a week if you are driving!

Munk,

My advice is to go see the Alamo and the Riverwalk. You can cut through San Antonio and Austin down to the coast to Corpus Christi. The panhandle is sort of dry and flat, not a whole lot to see there. Amarillo is a good place to stay, but not a whole lot to see. Lubbock is nicer and bigger, depends on which way you are going. Like Yvsa, I loved playing with Horny Toads when I was a kid.

Shiner Bock is great. What an excellent beer. I kind of miss Canadian beer (Labatt's), but I have taken to drinking Dos Equis and Shiner Bock. Good stuff. And you really have to get some good Mexican food, which is real easy, since there's a Mexican restaurant on every corner. Down on the coast you can get killer seafood. Fresh shrimp, crab, flounder, redfish, red snapper, trout, you name it. Lots of good barbecue places, too. And really good Steaks.

Texas is pretty easy on guns, I wouldn't worry too much. Pretty easy on speed limits too, although I do notice people with out of state plates get pulled over a lot more. And if you go through little towns there are local speed traps in some of them. Of course in West Texas it's quite a ways between towns.

Mmmmmmm!!!! Seafood!!!! I haven't had Redfish since I was a wee lad, and those huge Ocean Drum weren't too be sneezed at either!
We once lived in, I think it was, Riverdale not too terribly far from the Gulf.
There were three families of us that lived in a wide spot in the highway, The old man ran a very small service station and did mechanic work. One of the other guys made venetian blinds, the old kind with wooden slats.
Can't recall ever knowing what the other guy did.
The guy that made the blinds had plenty of the heavy cording to string them and they would take a spool of the cord and take off for the weekend.
There was a small sand spit not too far out in the Gulf where they would take a rented boat and motor and fish until Sunday afternoon.
It wasn't anything for them too bring in six or eight stringers of Redfish and Sea Drum when they came home.
We would be up late cleaning fish and have a big fish fry as well.
Nothing like fresh caught Redfish right outta the Gulf!!!!
There's a truck that comes up from South Texas every year from about April until fall with fresh shrimp, oysters, flounder, and other goodies from the Gulf.
I need to ask them why they never bring any Redfish. :grumpy:

I left the BBQ reference up there for DIJ.:p ;)

Dallas is only about 6-7 hours from here I think. It's a nice drive for us down to Sherman just over the line and back taking our time over a day.:D

Now I never drove thru 100 mile per hour winds knowingly, but I've found out about it later. They usually shut the roads down when winds get around 75 or 80 mph, but I know where to get around the roadblocks. Worse than the Washoe Zephyrs that fellow Mark Twain wrote about. Hell, by the time the wind gets from here to the Washoe area, it's plumb tuckered out! :p ;) :D :D :D

If your into Guns and knives and history and pass throught the Waco Area hit The Texas Rangers Hall of Fame ( the Law Enforcement Rangers)
the real ones. PS the Dr Pepper museum is in Waco as well.

Not trying to hijack your thread, munk. But....does anyone have any advice about Arlington, TX? I am going there in March. Driving or riding my bike. Haven't decided which yet.

Thanks all.

arlington has a lot of great strip joints, six flags over texas (theme park with many scary adult-only rides), the University of Texas at Arlington (where I went for a year) , Metroflex pro gym (where mr. olympia ronnie coleman lives and trains), lots of great restaurants, martial arts supply stores, gay bars, water park, and many other pleasant places to visit.
enjoy!

I yam shocked, SHOCKED! Not one suggestion that you spend your vacation in Scenic Amarillo. Using Amarillo as a base you can see it ALL: Borger; Pampa; Dumas; Hereford; Dalhart ("See Dalhart and die.") Everyting your heart could desire: armadillo races; U.S. Route 66; rattler roundups; wind; dust; pickups; heat; speed tarps. Yup. That's the ticket. Amarillo.

If you want to go to the Gulf Coast, go south to South Padre Isaland. Beach is much nicer there and you can scoot across the border if you want to. I live in Houston and it is as safe as any where else. North Houston is actually booming and more of an affluent area now. Someone is giving you 1970's info. Big Bend is the place to go. Never been much impressed with Corpus. San Antonmio is nice.

West Texas
barely north to see Carlsbad Caverns,
nice walk & be sure to watch the bats leave at dusk

sand-dune desert area just west of Midland-Odessa

Southish to see the McDonald Observatory

And Davis mountains area

Anyplace away from a city is great for stargazing

It's been years since I've been Amarillo way. Wonder if they still have those Cadillacs? half buried in the ground?

I realize Summer is no time for Texas. ON the other hand, I used to hike when it was 113 in the Mojave. Would anyone come with me? No. Could I do that today? No.

We are handicapped by when we can get her Mom to babysit. We have no family in Montana.

As for heading North- I've seen mountains and pine trees: I live in same.

We'd planned on going to the Padre island, though it looks more like a highway in the middle of the ocean on the map. I'd like to know where the best beaches are. Muddy water won't cut it with my wife.

I probably won't bother with a gun. I don't like being unarmed, but by the time I screw with baggage and airlines; well, the thought leaves me cold.

That may mean no khuk as well. I hate the idea of someone lifting it from my luggage at the airport.

This is what modern law does to the Second Amendment- it pretty much neuters it. Oh, you can do it, if if if.

Ddean has some good ideas there.

Semper Fi,
Hope you're going to visit someone, or business function, since IMHO there's not much to attract someone to Arlington :D Like amost all DFW-area suburbs, a nice place to live but not much for visitors... Lived in Arlington 15 years myself.
Six Flags is good if you like amusement parks. Wet N Wild (or whatever it is called today, that's the '80s name) is a big waterpark. Ballpark at Arlington, BFD.

Fort Worth is better. Active downtown area with shops and restaurants (all DFW area has great restaurants). Sid Bass (I think) Western Art Museum is very good. Stockyards area with Billy Bob's entertainment complex. I'm not sure if they are doing the cattle drive through the streets every day anymore or not.

If you're into outdoors stuff there is the big Bass Pro Shops and soon to be Cabelas megastore in the area. Also Cheaper Than Dirt's retail location. Most of the fancy malls are in Dallas. Dallas has some nice museums, Nasher sculpture garden, various party areas.

Let us know what you like to do and I can get more specific.

Beaches are best on the most southern end of south padre Island. If you make it thru Houston, be glad to lend you a pistola for your journey.

Thanks, mPisi

I am going on business. I may check out that Cheaper Than Dirt store though. I can always use some more magazines. :D

I've been to Texas a few times and never saw anything that impressed me enough to return.

One of my friends said that the state wouldn't even exist if the Alamo had a back door.
