Which knife got you hooked?

No one knife got me hooked - it was actually the search. I wanted to replace my wal-mart folder with something more reliable and with better materials. After a few days of research, I couldn't stop!

I've always liked knives, but a spyderco resilience was what moved me to pursue quality.

The Kershaw Thermite. It came very sharp and I just love the speed safe assist on that. Looking to get some other folders soon.

I had always carried something, but it was usually a WalMart Kershaw or Victorinox, not that there's anything wrong with any of them, but then a buddy that worked at a Benchmade dealer got me a Benchmade 916, that blade changed the way I look at knives. Brad

I'd always liked to have a knife on me. But the one that led me here was the Buck Adrenaline Ti. Then I caught the bug.

Spyderco delica, 20 years ago. Then the Spyderco Leafstorm put me over the edge

I deer hunted forever with an old Buck trailing edge knife that my father tossed to me. Never maintained it, never thought much of it, just a tool. Then one day at the lease my knife mentor and best friend showed me his new hunting blade - from some hot company that everybody on line thought highly of...incredible blade geometry, convex blade, great ergo's, .25 inch thick blade...a complete monster. You guessed it - a Bark River Gameskeeper. On that moment I saw the light. I've been using good, high quality knives ever since.

I've owned and carried a knife almost as long as I can remember. For the longest time I too was a one or two knife guy, only buying another if the current was lost or damaged. The first $100+ knife I ever bought started the obsession...ZT 0200.

Actually I bought many fixed blades all through high school. USN issue Knives and kukris for my father and I to boonie stomp ComNav Marianas Guam. Long before my Police Model. The PM was just the first folder I purchased myself. Knives is an entire life passion. My absolute first was a Buck stockman. I have a cool scar from it when my father tried to teach me native wood carving in 1981.

Benchmade 275 was the first knife that really made an impression on me and thought "Holy F this is how knives should be".

My first good knife was found just like my other user knives. It was a giant swiss army type knife with full size fork, spoon, etc. I found it on a hike miles from no where on a power line trail I was on. I lusted after many knives over the years that I simply couldn't afford. the Western 49, the Buck 110, Gerber "V" steel Sportsman 2, and many more. I lived with mostly Barlow Carbon steels for years before I bought my first modern quality knife. A Spyderco Endura FRN G2 ( Gin 1 steel) I bought in 92. After getting used to the solid lockup, the actually good performing stainless steel, and the knife kept getting smoother and smoother as time went on.

That was a beginning. Naturally I had to try other Spydercos beginning with the Delica. Than the time came for other brands beginning with Benchmade Panther ( G2) then the Chisel ground ATS 34 Emerson ( ATS 34 was the first "super" steel. Not 440C as some say) , etc, etc.

I finally got most of the knives I originally lusted after. The Vascowear Gerber took over 20 years to get a decent one as they were long discontinued. Model 49 Western, Buck 110 etc. came after I had enough money and got above water when my kid was older, I had a sweet extra job making very good money and paid off all the cars, etc.

Then I began selling knives on the gun show circut but that is a different story.

Note: the only knife I was never able to get and still pine over is a good condition ( not perfect) Schrade USA UH LB 7 carbon steel ( the Schrade + are very easy to find. Carbon steel almost impossible it seems)

I started getting into quality knives when I started flipping balisongs. I started with a cheapo Bali, and I eventually ordered a better one from "blade play" lol. I remember clicking on balis and sorting the price from "low to high" and I'd see a BM51 as the most expensive. My mind wondered "what is so good about this mystical $100+ knife"?

I eventually found reviews and learned about anodized titanium, D2 steel, tighter tolerances, yada yada... I was sold:D

I bought a BM51 which lead to buying a mini grip shortly after.
And now I'm addicted to all things sharp.

This is why it's good to share your knives to friends and especially friends that have similar overall interests. My brother in law showed me a Randall (or three) years ago. I checked into pricing at the time and within a year or so I had purchased my first Randall. But as I mentioned before, I had been a life long user and carrier of pocket knives to that point. Fixed blades just never really interested me much to that point in my life. The Randall broke the fixed blade ice and I quickly picked up a few along with a my first custom. Gunshows were good places to purchase such things at the time.

What did you wind up replacing that wallymart folder with?
