Which knife that you own came with the sharpest blade?

I'm just getting into sharpening myself and am having mixed results. I guess I've got to keep working on it.

Anyway, it got me to thinking about how knifemakers sharpen their blades. So, I went around looking at the knives that I own to see which one was the scariest. Actually, I guess you'd have to separate it into two categories, production and semi/custom. Basically since a custom maker can spend more time.

I found my Sebenza Tanto is really scary. I guess blade grind has an affect as well since this knife is super hollow. As for a production knife, I was impressed with an '98 Microtech SOCOM M/A I have. How about you?

Number 1 being the sharpest :

1. Antique Wakizashi by Ise Muramasa. Wicked wicked wicked sharp !!!

2. Ed Fowler pronghorn. 52100, great steel. One of my favorite steel.

3. Jay Hendrickson.

4. Charles Ochs.

5. Small Sebenza (my edge, not factory edge).

You might want to try Norton Indian (fine) sharpening stone. There are more expensive stones (such as japanese whetstone, etc.), but I think Norton Indian gives me best result.

It gives the edge micro serration unlike fine ceramic stone.

Factory mass produced blades:

1. Hands down the Spyderco Clipit Police Model.(cuts with just a touch)
2. Cold Steel Tantos( I can split hairs from the top with mine)

Just my opnion, I could be wrong...

Production: Spyderco. Hands down.

Custom: close call: Ray Kirk...followed by Jerry Hossom

Spyderco right out of the box. Honorable mention for Frost Mora, because it has only primary bevel and the angle is really shallow.

Custom: Walter Brend Model 2

Production: A toss up between any Microtech and any of Chris Reeve Knives Sebbie's/Mnandi's

:D

sharpest outta the box was my pre-prodution BM 806SD2 axis AFCK, it was SCARY sharp - a bud was looking at it, running his thumb along edge, and i said look out its sharp. he handed back and replied yes it was, and a minute or 2 later he was looking for kleenex because a big drop of blood was dripping off of his thumb - he said the thing is so sharp it cut me and i didnt even know it.........

sharpest customs are my crawford KFF right after pat resharpened it a while back, was about like the BM if not a hair sharper, and my DDR mini maxx spearpoint talonite is incredibly sharp also, that talonite seems almost carnivirous to me, it WANTS to cut you!!!.

the #2 production knife was a BM boguzewski spike that was wickedly sharp outta the box, closely followed by my EKI SOCFK tanto, sharpest chisel grind from the factory i have ever ran into...and my MT LCC also came acceptably sharp, and my spydie police sabre grind, for a serrated, is incredibly sharp too. had a police flat grind which wasnt NEAR as sharp, for an example

but all in all, most arent near what i wish they were, sharpening is often the first thing i do, along w/adding mil tec to the pivot, usually before i even carry it.

Production: Spyderco Perrin Street Bowie (hair poppin' VG10).
Custom: Janich/Snody Ronin (needle pointed sharp BG42).

You can't make blanket statements about any non-custom. I.e., I've gotten MT's that were like a razor, while some of them wouldn't scare a hair let alone cut it. My latest Spyderco is super sharp, while others are just adequate. Everyone says that Daltons come hair-popping sharp, I've yet to see this. It all depends on the individuals at the factory, which varies, while customs, being made at a much lower quantity can have a lot more attention paid to each individual knife and are "usually" a lot more consistant.

In my admittedly limited experience, the sharpest factory edge I've ever gotten was on a Sogwinder I had about 10 years ago. I just dreamed about it one night and woke up without any hair on my forearms.

Sharpest I have ever seen is my Dozier Straight Personal. None of my other knives compare. As far as probuction knives go, my old BM CQC7 was pretty sharp out of the box.

Production: Toss-up between my Marbles Fieldcraft and PCKS Buck 110. The Marbles had that great polished convex grind. The Buck has the new Edge2000 treatment.

Custom: My Dozier K-4. Bob Dozier puts an absolutely sensational working edge on his knives.

Another vote for Spyderco. My Viele folder in VG10 came scary sharp, and the sharpest knife I have ever received out of the box was my Moran drop point, also in VG10.

I hate to say this but the sharpest knife I ever bought was one of those interchangable blade Tiger-sharp knives:eek:
