Which knives would you NOT sell when downsizing?

An enviable position. I'm annoyed that some of your great old threads are missing most of the photos now.
Do please feel free to place the blame for this directly on the responsible party -Fototime and it's shutdown. Just like many, esp including Coop, I lost about 95% of my images.....

Yes, I know and it's terrible. Some of the best WIP threads are destroyed.

Ultimately, our photos are our responsibility. I'll never trust anyone with my photos. I keep all originals on my computer and two backups. I very rarely upload one of my photos that isn't a compressed copy.

Here's my input.

Anything you have duplicates of (I see two sebenza's, two Shiro neon's, etc) I would sell one of them. The two WH's I see are very similar, I would probably ditch one of those. I really like that Olamic Busker, if you decide to sell it let me know.

I would also sell the BM 940 as the 940-1 is the better of the two.

If I inherited the same collection, I'd sell all of them. I'd keep the Sebenzas if they were full size, but not the small. I'd rather have the money!

I live my life as I see fit and while I think it is admirable for you to keep copies of everything you might image, I don't think you can expect such excellence of everyone, ie, do not place responsibility for this anywhere but where it squarly belongs - on Fototime.

I don't know the whole story about that but it was pretty shitty of them. They should've had everything backed up so they could send you guys copies of your photos. Sorry if my other post sounded like I was being a smartass. That was not my intention.

I’m not sure if this has been said, but it’s best to keep it simple.

If you can’t decide to keep or sell AND you couldn’t replace it under reasonable conditions…KEEP IT.

Knives are small and easy to store. It’s not like you’re collecting refrigerators!

As OP, I'd like to say I really enjoy all of your different perspectives and comments. Its a pleasure to read and consider them. And I do not take offense if you have different tastes, or need knives of a different type for your uses. That is to be expected.

I'd like to respond to a few of other comments -

First, 39 (I think somebody counted) is not a large collection and doesn't take up a lot of room. That's true (although boxes add to it). May not make sense to everyone, but I am trying to drastically simplify my life at the moment. Get to a sort of minimalist lifestyle you might say. I have already made progress with other stuff and I really like the feeling. This collection is the result of previous downsizing (with a few impulse buys in the mix) over the last few years. It's time to prune one more time.

Yes, I will keep track of any interest expressed.

Why 10? Good question. Part of the the answer is that 5 is too hard to do, though maybe I should give it a try. And 1 is impossible for me. 10 lets me keep a good sampling and rotate as EDCs.

Also, a note about the sebenzas. They are ancient and act like it. Also blades are pretty rough. One is an "original" sebenza with ATS-34 (late 90's maybe), and the other is a "regular" with BG-42, both long before the 21s. They are interesting from an age perspective I suppose. Maybe someone with the right skills could make them sing.

And for those who are not familar with Umfaans - they are tiny versions of the early sebenzas, built the exact same way. More like a keychain knife. I think they were a bit cheaper than sebenzas when they were available, and most had some kind of design on the handle (zig-zag, circles, others).

I have interest in the BG42 if you sell and wouldn’t mind PMing me. Thanks for sharing your great collection CuttnStuff

... And I'll be waiting for a PM about the "darker" Mnandi...

... When you have the time and opportunity...

I’d keep the Umfaan, Small Seb, a Mnandi, and the Shiros, and sale the rest 🤣😂

Ha! I'm going through the same thing right now. So many just sit in the boxes I have for them, but it's hard to let some of them go. I used to collect traditionals like GEC and Case and then I moved to moderns and then to LARGE moderns and now autos. I'd like to keep a smattering of different varieties, but yeah, it's nuts and excessive, which is the curse of collecting. There's always something better, or that you think is better until you get it in hand. But it's definitely a personal choice. It's honestly on my list tonight to go through and select a bunch that never see the light of day. I have about as many as you, maybe closer to 60. I've sold and traded and upgraded quite a bit over the years, but it's time for the "great unloading". I HAVE gotten rid of a few I've regretted, so be careful before you start unloading!

Our tastes differ significantly.

I’d keep the 2 howser 2 blades. The rest don’t apeal to me at all. Funny how that works.

I’m sure most of my collection would not apeal to you.

But my first thought when I saw your collection was that it’s not that large. (Could easily fit in a drawer already).

Best of luck on your decision and the move.
What he said. Keep the trappers and roll the rest.

 At twenty cents on the dollar: that's a whole lot of knives!

I'm downsizing right now, as well. I'm getting rid of my discontinued, most expensive (safe queens), and the XL Cold steels are next. That should keep me busy for a year or two.
I have heard that Paypal seems to be generating 1099s (additional "earned income" tax) for sales over $600 total per year. This should slow me down.
