I have an acquaintance that has a small shop and he does a lot of R&D for government and other projects. Some of the stuff they are working with would make Luke Skywalker say "I want one of those!"

Yeah they're coming out with all sorts of cool things now that I can no longer play with them. Bastids. All I got was a SAW that rolled off the assembly line during the Mesozoic Era.

Izula is all you'll need for a day hike, but if you're camping out I'd pick the RC-4. Personally I like to bring along a SAK or light multitool of some sort as well.

Funny.... sounds like most of the items the RC sells and is coming out with :)

I voted for the RC-3. I thought I wanted a 4 until I held one. The RC-4 is so much heavier than the 3 and for backpacking any added weight makes a difference.

RC-3. Great all around knife, you don't really need more. Of course, when backpacking, less is often more. So maybe you do need more.

Another RC-4 vote here!
Used mine last backpacking trip, and thought that anything smaller would have made some chores a little bit harder.
I also had my Izula on my neck for fine carving.

I think the added ultility is well worth the added weight. I pack often, but I'm not one of those crazies who's cutting patches off all his gear to cut weight down.

i like the rc4. if i would need a bigger blade then id go with the rc6. im personally not a fan of sbaer grinds so i dont really like the rc5

Backpacking meaning dayhike Rc3. Three days backpack camping Rc4 or Rc6 for firewood. Dayhike an Izula or Hest would be fine.

I voted for the RC4, for a little extra reach through wood when batoning. I don't know anything about your other gear, the location and time of year you're hiking, and the number of days you're out. If you're just going to eat MH meals and sleep in a tent and maybe make the occasional camp fire then the little Izula might be even better. It's smaller and lighter (grams add up) and will do a fantastic job of handling most normal camp tasks. Heck, a SAK is used by many backpackers, and it's not even in the same ballpark as an Izula.

But only one knife  that is crazy!

As a few others have mentioned you should always have more than one knife unless your just a few minutes from your house/car. You not only have a backup but they can compliment each other as far as what they can accomplish. They don't have to be huge though, a small folder and medium fixed might be just fine for the tasks at hand.

If I only had 1 thing with me in the woods it would be a good knife. If I only had two things with me it would be two good knives :)

Compared to the weight of food and water while packing, knives are very very light. Having a couple blades isn't really cumbersome.

You're gonna be fine with a Izula for backpackin'. It's your wits that save you in a situation... but the blade helps.
