Which SAK?

I got thinking about it, and I decided I would throw an image in....

I stress the springs, and was every moment anticipating near certain laceration, but here it is.....

That one on the far left is a Locksmith, right? If I could ever run across one of those around here, I'd prolly buy up 2 or three of them. Perfect SAK imo. My main concern when I went pattern hunting was finding a SAK with a wood saw and a phillips screwdriver. The metal saw/file is a nice bonus, and of course the blade, can/bottle openers, and reamer would also get quite a bit of use. In short, It's got all I would ever need, short of a heavy duty pair of pliers, and there's not a useless tool on it.

Yeah, you are right, I had thought it was something else, but you have rightly called it. Nice, I love it when people teach me about something.

After you have just enthused about it, I feel bad telling you that it is actually the one that gets used the least. It sits in a kit, that's it. If you have any trade stock, you might email me.... mdpoff at yahoo.

I really do appreciate the offer, and I would have taken you up on it if I hadn't just ordered 3 of them. One for me, one for my nephew who's just about at that age, and one spare, (or for his little brother if I can keep mine that long without losing it.)
Who knows, you may get some use out of it yourself before too long :D

I haven't read thru the whole thread but I already know you are going to get a bazillion people telling you to get the farmer. Many of these people know what they are talking about and will give you good reasons for their decisions, but many others are just repeating what they heard someone else say. I use a sak alot at work and everywhere else. I love my old farmer, even with its reprofiled broken tip. Many will say to choose it because of its thicker knife blade and I am all for using tough stuff but if you use yours like I use mine now, you use your sak knife for scalpel type work and carry a heavier blade for all other work, so that may not be important to you. I like the lighter weight and the toothpick and tweezers on the cellidor or nylon scaled models when I'm afoot. I use the tweezers especially on a semi-regular basis. I like the longer slide lock models like the Hunter for their longer saw blade but I also like to carry the Hiker and other shorter models at times and in my fire making and/or first aid pouches. I greatly prefer Victorinox models as you can probably tell. You have to decide what tools are most needed and pick your sak accordingly. I personally own very few saks that don't have a saw and awl(preferably on the end) on them.

I don't see a huge need to have a pair of scissors but want a good saw. Or would you prefer a leatherman wave or one of their models?

Ive been EDCing a Leatherman Wave for years and years, and it was great when I was still living in the city. Nowadays I find myself more than often cutting small wood, sapling etc, and well, the leatherman really isnt a "knife". Light cutting is ok, but if any real pressure is applied, the edges of the handle become really uncomfortable. I recently ordered a one hand trekker and a farmer, since these two models contain the tools I think Ill be needing. I too dont have a need for scissors, but I really dig the SAK saw  I propably would be perfectly happy with the OHT alone, but carrying an OH model might be a problem in some places here (given the circumstances, carrying any knife can be considered illegal), so the farmer will be kind of "sheeple friendly" EDC. Also, the alox models look shweeet!

IMHO, a SAK is pretty hard to recommend to anyone else though. Everyone's got their own requirements about the tools they need. What's great about Victorinox, is the amount of models in their catalogue; there's something for everyone ;)

So, just think about what tools you need, and find a suitable SAK. Most models are really affordable, and all the tools in SAKs work like their meant to, so you dont have to worry about quality or function. Its really that simple

I keep my Champion in my everyday carry pack. It is a little more than I want carry in my pocket, but I never noticed it when I carried it in a belt pouch in the military. I would like a thinner champion without the fish scaler. I often carry an Explorer for the in-line phillips and the scissors in an urban environment. In the woods I would definitely want a saw. My 13 year old son EDCs a Farmer. At work or the base I normally carry a multi-tool instead of the SAK because I use the pliers a lot.
