Which Spyderco are you carrying today?

Awesome! Would love to see more photos of that purple dark color change. Do you think though if those freezing temps might effect the heat treat on the blades?

Thank you for the compliment my friend. I’ll tag you the next time I get a nice true more dark color change photo. We’re going to be way below 0 all this coming week, so there should be some more opportunities for that to happen.

I have a feeling it has more to do with the ambient humidity, however minute it may be, freezing on the surface (like fogging up your glasses kind of humidity), and that along with the sun lighting, the grind marks on the metal surface that catch that moisture, and the angle it’s viewed from, all add to that visual effect.

I say that because once the blade warms back up it disappears. I tried to duplicate it by leaving it (the knives) in the deep freezer, and all it did was just freeze over a whiteish haze buildup that did turn blacker as it warmed up and evaporated, but no purple color was visible to me that I saw.

As for the cold effecting the heat treatment, that’s an excellent question, but I have no idea. While it’s true the different metals can and will become more brittle the colder it gets, at what point it happens to the blades I really don’t know. Our truck equipment used to start acting funky once it got to -25, I did see and experience lots more breakage of heat treated equipment and hardware at those temperatures.

Thank you again for the compliment on the picture.

My first Endura, in K390. This thing is a whole lotta knife!! I bought it as a user I plan on cleaning it up since there's some rust spotting, and applying a mustard patina.

Very nice. I bought the Endela and have been so pleased with it that I ordered an Endura to try.

In honor of my recent purchase of the Pattadese, I swapped out my G10 Millie for the Pattada which I am carrying today. :)

Honestly, didn't "need" the Pattadese any more than I needed the Watu that I purchased previously.

They are both really too small for me. I bought them only to pair with their larger counterparts, the Pattada and Chokwe, to become a part of my Ethnic series subcollection.

However, I do like that the Pattadese was made in Italy (where I think Spydercos are extremely well made) and uses M390 (instead of N690Co) steel which is also something that I prefer, more for consistently w/in my collection than for another other reason, since I make a point of buying knives using M390 steel whenever possible.
