Who was/is that blind guy who played slide guitar in the movie "Road House" w/Patriack Swayze?
He's great. He'd be on the extended list.

.
Jeff Healey. A few years ago he switched to playing and singing old jazz. Also, he very recently lost his battle with cancer.
I remember seeing him on a triple bill with SRV and Jeff Beck.
He and Stevie were great. Jeff put me in a trance for a week...

Wow,what a shame:( I don't remember hearing about his passing.

That must've been a heckuva show!

Allan Holdsworth definitely is one of the greatest guitarists alive. As he moved from Jazz Rock to Jazz he should appeal to a broad audience especially since jazz rock elements are still distinguishable in his later style. To me his best album is ‘None to soon’: complex harmonies combined with a unique legato technique. Holdsworth plays the guitar like a sax and the results are amazing. Check him out if you want to hear some great music.

So here’s my top ten:

Jazz:
Wes Montgomery
Jim Hall
Allan Holdsworth
John Scofield

Classical guitar:
Andres Segovia
John Williams
Julian Bream

Blues and Rock:
Jimi Hendrix
B.B. King
SRV

- Mike

I'm watching this concert of SRV on comcast on demand. It's somewhere in Europe.

I stand by my convictions with Stevie Ray:thumbup:....the best there ever was IMO.
....This is coming from a big time Clapton & Hendrix fan too!

I saw SRV on his last tour
I will never forget it
He had on a white suit, white hat and was BAREFOOTED on stage
He told the crowd to stay away from The Cocaine
"That stuff will kill ya...The stuff will kill ya"

No one has love for Yngwie??
YngwieHorns.jpg

My early influences were
Blackmore, Van Halen, Rhodes, Dave Murray, Glen Tipton, Gary Rossington, Gilmour, Angus!! Angus!! Angus!!!

I had 2 older brothers who shaped my musical tastes
I remember I was about 5 years old and they used to make me sing Black Water by the Doobie Brothers
I loved that song!!
Lil' Trent walking around the house wailing, "I like to hear some funky Dixieland, Pretty momma come and take me by the hand!!"

Then they played That Smell by Lynrd Skynrd
And that's all she wrote!!!
My mom didn't like me walking around the house singing, "Whiskey bottles!! and brand new cars!! Oak tree your in my way!! There's too much coke!!...."

I still got the Street Survivor album I "stole" from my brother
It's the one where the guys who the flames are touching died
skynyrdssflameslp.jpg

It still has the order form inside for t shirts and key rings too

Cool poll!!!
I always like hearing what other people like....

Great thread but a little correction on the Scorpions: Matthias Jabs plays 98% of the lead (No One Like You), Rudolf Schenker plays the rhythm guitar. In concert you'll wonder if Rudolf is even playing, he's so busy putting on a show. :) Michael Schenker played on the Lovedrive album and may have contributed on Animal Magnetism as well. His work with UFO was great.

Steve Howe definitely stands out as a player who can cross genres--saw him in a little theater with GTR in '86, blew my mind. He can play light, heavy, classical, flamenco, etc. all with incredible skill. Brian May also stands out IMHO for the variety and creativity he provides.

Oh man, what a great album cover. I read once where the music company bought up all the copies of it that were in stores and re-released it with a flame-less cover.

Three versions of Little Wing, Hendrix, Clapton & SRV you decide who does it best.

As for....Yngwie Malmsteen ,he is a virtuoso in every sense of the word:thumbup: I just didn't really like his music(if that makes sense:confused:)

Good point about May and the Top 10 :o

As for Pete Townshend, I'd put him in the Top 10 for songwriters, but I'm not sure about guitar players. He certainly has a unique style though and great presence.

7X for Howe? Hats off to you sir, you are very fortunate.

They're all great but the SRV version of "Little Wing" is incredible. I love when he steps on his pedal at 2:40 and launches the song to another level. Man could he play . . . RIP
