Besides Hendrix, Steavie Ray, Eric Clapton and Jimmie Page I would say Carlos Santana, Duane Allman, Eric Johnson, Pete Townsend, and of course me. Major LOL!!! I suck at guitar but have a lot of fun with it.

Something every great guitarist said about him(her)self at one time.

Keep practicing;)

I grew up with these guys..I took these a while back hanging out with them in San Antonio. Best Guitarists of all time IMO:

Ricky Skaggs, Chet Atkins, and yes that Roy Clark from Hee Haw can play. :p

Eddie VH has talent, speed, technique, and innovation but I find his playing lacking any soul.

In no order, off my feeble head

Jeff Beck
SRV
Page
Al Dimeola, for speed and flavor
Phil Keggy (what, nine digits?)
Hendrix
Santana
Pop hits aside, Robert Cray is a great blues player
Leo Kotke (acoustic virtuoso)
Knopfler
Clapton
Johnny Lang, still just a pup and has toured with many of the great names already mentioned in this thread.

Anyone catch the taped PBS Clapton Crossroads festival in TX ?

Well worth buying if you have not seen it and enjoy watching and listening to wonderful guitar playing. (ZZ Top is still cool )
Great guitar players from many musical styles and Slow Hand sits in with many of them.
He can plays so effortlessly with some of the best guitarists of their genres, yet he seems somewhat restrained as not to over shadow them.
A very generous musician.
So many great (particularly blues) guitar players just below the surface that don't get exposure or mentioned in these polls. :)

You know I couldn't find the correct words to describe Eddie Van Halen, until now.You put it perfectly;)

So far SRV & Clapton are neck in neck, with Hendrix & Page following closely behind.

Keep on voting everybody! It's really interesting to know what people are into,as well as hearing about a few guitarists I've never even heard of.

Jeff Beck classic solo

Since the poll was constructed around AOR, let's stick with that: Jimmy Page, without a doubt.

In so many ways, Page was the blueprint... the archetype for AOR. At his apex he was simply stunning. As a musician, writer, producer, band leader and band member, I think he was in a class of one.

Mark Knopfler, Marty Stuart, Eddie Van Halen, Brad Paisley, Tom Bukovac, Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Lindsay Buckingham, Vito Bratta, Alvin Lee.
