Who doesnt let the cold weather stop their overnighters?

Cold weather is when I camp..so Old man winter gets my camping going. I cant stand summer camping..bugs and ticks get on my nerves..and in the winter, your fire MEANS something. Gene

I love winter camping! I like it not SUPER cold, but just chilly and dry, say fifteen below and a good layer of snow on the ground. Then I get around by cross-country skis. It's great! Quiet and empty and clean. I like to go by myself and build a fire and lie on top of my sleeping bag and read...that is really heaven!

My favorite time of year for hiking, hunting, and camping. Better preparation and winter gear required, but worth the effort. Get an Exped Downmat 9 Deluxe (26 inches wide) sleeping pad, put on a warm hat, slip into a good sleeping bag, and sleep like a baby. Here's some of my hiking/hunting gear:

Great photo Brians ,I love being out in colder weather. I have been riding my motorbike today and I have to bundle up pretty good this far north this late in the season.
I am dressed more like a snowmobiler than a biker. Also Gunknifenut is totally right about the bugs and how great hot soup or coffee tastes when it is nippy out. However I would not want to be out overnight when it is -50 like it gets in January.

I agree w/GKN-ticks and the rest of the creepys get on my nerves... I do it because I love the outdoors, but the winter freshness is awesome! No bugs, no sweltering hot nights trying to sleep in a puddle of sweat. Just brisk, fresh air and a great little fire. Throw in some coffee or cocoa and we are talking living!

I love winter camping, the sheeples stay inside. The only change in my packing is in the clothes I wear. If it is early winter or late fall I may even forego the sleeping bag in favor of just a blanket and poncho liner. If it is really cold I may take a down vest as well as my sweater.

cold weather=fish chowder

better than sex. No, really. I've had both. It's better, and cheaper too.

Been a long time since I've deliberately stayed out overnight in a Wisconsin Winter, but I'm much more active in the Fall and Winter, unless Mother Nature is pitching a hissy-fit.

I haven't been winter camping for over 10 years, but I'm ready/hoping to get back to it. I have friends who guided trips for a living (since retired), but they did winter trips in style. I went on several with them. They were very much into traditional gear, so it was wooden/rawhide snowshoes, homemade toboggans to haul the gear, leather/canvas mukluks and lots of wool layers. Shelter consisted of canvas wall tents with no floor and a small sheet metal stove. The tent & stove combo were downright luxurious for meals and drying gear, although I preferred my own quarters for actual sleeping (two person tent and a -15 degree down sleeping bag).

Your friends aren't the Conovers are they?

Here in Mississippi, I look forward to the winter. I camp more now than anytime in the summer. I hate the heat, humidity and bugs of a Ms. summer. Bring on the winter for me 100%. We dont have bad winters here. It rarely gets below 15. Average is around 32 to 10 as a low.

I can and have done the freezer sleep up a mountain, but nowadays if I honestly had my choice, it'd be indoors. I wouldn't say I am a softie, but jee whiz, I have paid my dues several times over, I think I earn a Holiday Inn at my age.

I love winter camping! I line my tent with a space blanket that reflects my body heat back into me. I stay real toasty warm and without bugs it is quite nice!

Well.. I actually prefer to be out in the winter/cold weather.

I add a sleeping bag liner if it looks like it is going to be REALLY cold (-10 or below) and add socks, extra hat, small things like chapstick. But my sleepingbag, tent and 99% of my stuff stays the same. Extra coffee.

Oh... and I add a small flask of irish cream or Mr Beam for my coffee.. :)

I work outside every day, rain or shine, snow or sleet. I hunt all season long and ice fish too. Nothing toughens you up more than these things. Correct clothing and limiting yourself to extream cold are necessary. Warming up is a must. Good food and good knowledge of how to protect oneself are critical to outdoor survival.

I agree. You really do need to acclimatize yourself by regular outdoor activities in winter. I used to love winter camping and the temps only caused a change in sleeping bag and tent (and the addition of snow shoes or X-C skis.) Warm clothes are always carried for camping in the Whites or the Adirondacks, even in summer. Hunting on snow means paying more attention to the variety of tracks and the stories that they tell. But about this ice fishing stuff.... I was never accurate enough to cast into that little bitty hole...

I used to go snowshoeing/backpacking into the Green Mountains or the Adirondarks for a couple of weeks at a time.
The coldest was -40, -20 was normal.

To get used to camping in the cold, start in the fall, when it is below frezzing, but no snow.

You need winter gear.
Don't try and stretch your summer gear.
Spare set of gloves/mittens.
A gasoline/kerosene stove, not propane it frezzes.
A winter bag
A good mat to insulate from the cold.
A self supporting tent.

I would not use a hammock! LOL

I by far prefer to camp in the winter.
Less bugs, less sweat, fewer PEOPLE, I prefer snow and bare trees (excepting confiers) to blazing heat and green, green, green.

Now, my FAVORITE time, is right now, in a northern state right when all the leaves have turned and half are on the ground. The time between Halloween and Thanksgiving has always been a magical time for me.

Yeah, I love this time of year too. I am going to camp out in the snow, and see the winter sky at night. Pretty cool. Summer has to many damn bugs. The ticks are worrisome because of the diseases they carry. Also now, the mosquitoes carry eee. Very nasty. With a nice fire, and rocks to direct the heat, being out in the winter can be pretty fun.
