The friends I was referring to are a couple -- Fran Doonan and Dave Mussey. Dave apprenticed with the Conovers quite some time ago and modeled his guiding business very closely to how the Conovers do it. Never been on a trip with the Conovers, but their Labrador trips look like a great time.

BTW, Dave is also the one who ran the class where I built my canoe in my avatar.

Man I love the winter. Heavier pack and clothing but its just so much fun. I like the way another guy put it, the fire means something.

I like to use a hardware store brown tarp with silver lining, set up one portion of it as a ground cloth then the other as a basic lean to close to the fire. A good wool blanket and sleeping pad, with a well stocked fire a few feet away and some of your best buds also around the camp fire....maybe a few drinks down the hatch...nothing better. I can't wait for this year!!
