Who has found THE knife?

I think, if we are honest, we don't really want to find "The one." Finding it means the end. No more.

Gary-
I read this thread, and thought about it, and then I read somemore of the forums while still thinking about this to see if my instant answer stayed the same, and it has, so I decided to post my answer.
Like what was said above it depends on what style you are asking, fixed, folder, kitchen, etc.
BUT as far as a folder the answer is YES I have found the one. It is my Larry Chew Covert D/A. I knew about these when he first talked about them, and in April 2001 at the Oregon Knife Show, Larry Chew was there, and I happened to be the first one at his table, and he was starting to put it down on the table, and it never made it as I ask to see it. It was just what I was wanting with carbon fiber scales, 440V blade, etc. I looked at Luana, and told her this is it, and I did not even ask how much just said I will take it. When he told me I gulped but shelled out the money as I knew it may be my only chance to get one. It was, and still is the most I have ever paid for a folder, but to this day I don't regret it.
Then about last Christmas the horrible thing happened, and the spring snapped, and when I heard that my heart drpped to the floor. Well got ahold of Larry Chew, and sent it in, and I just last week got it back repaired as he has gone through some hard personal times, but that is history. I waited every day for him to get ahold of me to let me know it was repaired, and he was shipping it back. Well he called lst week, and said it was done, and knowing how much I missed it he shipped it out that day air, and I got it 2 days later.
And when I had it back in my hands I knew that is was the one!!!!:D
I realize this is a long post, and apologize for that, but had to tell the story so you would know how I knew it was the ONE!!!
Don't get me wrong I still, and will keep buying more folders for variation,, and just becuz it is my hobby, but the Larry Chew Covert D/A is the ONE!!
Again sorry for the long post.
Thanks for your patience..

Larry

I agree with what Larry ended his post with..."will continue to buy more folders for variation and because it is a hobby"
Finding the one doesn't mean you have to stop buying other knives or trading for other knives. As far as I am concerned I have found the one, and in fact found it a year ago. It is none other than the large Sebenza! I really prefer it in the Classic format with the wood inlays and the large Classic with bloodwood inlays I have is the ultimate to me in a folder! Doesn't mean I've stopped trading for knives though, it just means that this is the one that fullfills my idea of a perfect folder. I still continue to trade/buy other knives and lately have gotten hold of a Crawford KFF with dark blue anodized handles and satin blade that is absolutely gorgeous. I like the KFF for its design and grip. I also found a large Carson model 16 with titanium bolsters and G-10 handle slabs with S30V steel, another beauty I get pleasure from carrying. I also have a Carson/Vanguard on order from Les that should be here in the next week or so. There is also a Brend/Cutter DA that promises to be the automatic Sebenza I've been looking for. A DKW Sand Shark just arrived that is absolutely addicting with the double action action!

All this said I still prefer the large Classic Sebenza w/wood inlays overall because it is the "one" in my mind that is my perfect folder and the one that day in and day out gets carried and gives me the most pleasure to pull out and use or to just look at and marvel at how well something can be put together when you put your mind to it!

Now this is just how I feel, others will feel different, and some will even decry the Sebenza as an overpriced factory knife  But we all have our opinions and it is this that makes the world go 'round!!

For an EDC, I agree with Larry Luana, and I got my D/A covert spitfire from Mr. Chew at this years Eugene show. It is my favorite EDC. That Voodoo roller bearing system, the hidden release, and hidden safety that locks the auto action, perfect size and blade design. Well I guess you can tell I like this one alot. But, there are many other knives designed for other uses than an EDC, so I am still shopping.

For every-day folder, I think I've found it -- an "almost large" TnT.

I guess I might still be in the "honeymoon" period with this knife, but it just strikes me as absolutely perfect.

I'd still like to find THE perfect fixed-blade to complement it though. This new S30V Hunter (utility) from Rob Patton might do it, once I get the left-hand sheath.

Right now I'm carrying my NNHD, and it's darned close, but the kydex sheath rides kinda high.

Gary,

I can honestly say I have found THE one!

I do not buy anyone else's folders anymore. I only wish to acquire more TNT's.

FOR ME, no others interest me. I am NOT berating anyone elses work, there are many damn fine makers out there. It's just...I've found mine.

Tom Mayo's TNT is truely my holy grail of folders.

I have only acquired more TNT's since last spring. At Blade the only folders I bought were Mayo's.

I have 8 TNT's at present. This # will grow.

just my thoughts...

Gary, there was no "settling" to it:D It was more like reaching the destination of a lonnnngggg journey.

Thanks Friends, they say confession is good for the soul...:)

But it may be the phrase ~ Misery loves company ~ is more appropo ?

I get this feeling that I'm sunk, though this Scott Cook fixed blade is looking more and more comfy by the hour.

Forgot one other knife that is SO close to being the one, I was foolish enough to once put it up forsale but lucky for me no one bought it! Because now I'd not let it go for anything, especially since I had David Boye make it from the gitgo for me with Desert Ironwood handle, the Boye/Loveless Persona, such a sweet knife! But again, it's not a RUGGED blade but a very classy detail type of knife.

AND tonight as I drove to pick up my daughter, about a 45min drive, time to reflect on this threads' question, I was flipping the Dobruski Wharncliff and that has been such a trooper since it's arrival, I do wear it everyday at work as well! I just put the Scott Cook fixed blade in my pocket...

As one country song states,
~ We're all here cause we're not all there ~
And I FIRMLY agree with the replys that place the blame squarely on forums such as these, TEMPTATION is so very strong when people post things! I need much more willpower! ;)

Thanks for replying to this, I think it helps...I think it helps...(just keep telling myself that!)

And I read the Mayo's are pretty well liked in this thread as well, never owned one, handled a couple but not owned them, Tom and I are/were working out a deal but we're both swamped! :D

I'm still looking...and probably will be for a looooooong time. But I'll say that my Sebenzas are at the top of the list until something better comes along that I like. (yeah right! )

I found my ideal folder a bit more than a year ago, it is the Allen De Villiers Exectac Spearpoint. This is a smaller folder with a wide spearpoint blade of roughly 2 3/4" and an OAL of slightly more than 6.5". A knife this size is great EDC considering the number of jurisdictions with 3" limits. The Exectac has an ATS-34 blade along with titanium bolsters and carbon fiber scales. Some woould argue that a truly ideal knife should have a blade of S30V, Talonite, or Stellite, but frankly ATS-34 is fine with me.

The catch is that although my Exectac is my perfect knife, I'm a knife collector so I will always be looking for the next blade in my collection. For my purposes, I can think of several other knives that come very close to perfect for my uses: The Spyderco Native in plain edge, the Titanium Salsa with plain edge, Spyderco Temperance in Leaf Blade, Benchmade 705 & 771, the Chris Reeve Mnandi. Some really great customs are: P.J. Tomes' Moose; Obenauf's small Model 2; Kit Carson's small Model 4; Tom Mayo's TNT Mini-Hawkbill and Bob Lum's Mini Stalker are great knives too. As you can see, my ideal knives are all smaller knives between 2.25 -3.15". I like bigger knives but i just don't see where they are really practical for EDC in urban or office settings.

Just when I think I'm happy, another maker comes out with something I want. It is their fault, not mine!

I'm still working on the perfect knife for me. I picked up a large classic Sebenza and was very satisfied. The only thing that I didn't like about it was the fact that it folded. Who woulda' thunk? I will say that I've found the perfect folder for me in the Sebenza, just not the perfect knife for me.

So I've been thinking fixed blades. I have a Jens Anso Hybrid on order, and just finished testing a new Dozier prototype. I'm betting that one of these two knives may actually replace the Sebenza as my EDC. The Dozier may actually turn into both my EDC and outdoor knife.

The CRK NKONKA may come close for me. Started the process of saving up. Of course, I also want an UBEJANE. Um...and a Battle Mistres...
Oh hell. I guess the answer is no.

I agree that there are going to be several categories for me to find "the one" from. :D

Here's my "the one" all-purpose folder. The knife I always carry.
mini-maxx.jpg

Darrel Ralph Mini-Maxx: 4" Talonite

When I'm not at work, where there's a 4" limit, I also carry my "the one" defensive folder.
maxx_5.5.jpg

Camillus CUDA Maxx: 5-1/2" D-2

My other "the one" is my wilderness fixed blade.
texas_6.jpg

Bob Dozier Texas #6: 5-1/2" D-2

I own other knives and I occasionally have reasons to carry and use them, but I am totally satisfied with those three.

I have really never thought of looking for that one perfect knife. For me, the closest I will come is to find a knife that will stay with me always. So far there have been five. Many others have come and gone, some of them great knives, but just not for me.

Nope, not at all interested in finding "the one".

If we found "The one" why would we come back here? (BF)

Therefore, I would suggest that the people who found "The one" will never answer this thread because they are out playing with their "one" while the rest of us are here talking about them.

:p :p :D

I have not found the ONE true knife for me. Also, in trying to visualize that perfect knife, i would have to ask: Perfect at doing what?

I am still looking for a perfect daily carry knife, but for my perfect "big chopper", I got my HI 18" WWII Khukuri. Perfect size, perfect weight for me. My only knife where I dont want to change a thing even if I could. The first time I chopped something with it was almost a religious experience...

Well I thought my ultimate knife would be TNT but then I found the flipper, then the speedsafe mechanism, then the sharpfusion blade... I guess that a combination of all would be it. Simple design, speedsafe, flipper, sharpfusion blade.... I am still dreaming :).

The ultimate FB was easy for me - it is the Camillus Talon.
