Therefore, I would suggest that the people who found "The one" will never answer this thread because they are out playing with their "one" while the rest of us are here talking about them.

:p :p :D

I realized that after posting...and figured I'd not find anyone that would have found THE knife, thinking alike! ;)

Woah, woah woah G2, it's easy to blame your addiction on these forums, but is it possible your sheath making might be a part of the problem? I mean it would be like a guy that was trying to kick a Foot Fetish getting a job in a Shoe Store. ;)

Maybe it's because my knives don't come as fast as some folks, or that I've never got into trading knives, but I have several knives that could easily be IT for me within a certain style. My Pronghorn is probably the best hunter I'll ever own. I've got two linerlocks in stag; my Washburn was made to my design and it's still exactly what I want. When I bought my Carson M4 in Stag & Stellite, I figured I had linerlocks covered. Then I saw G2's JW Smith Dagger for sale, and I told JW when I had the money and he had the time I needed one like that in stag. So Gary, you see you're part of the problem.

The other thing is being a part of this comunity it's easy to get to know and become friends with the makers here. I'm at the point now where if I only bought knives from friends whose work I admire I'll never run out of the next IT Knife.

BTW G2, that Carson is begging for a sheath, when does my number come up?

I do not think I will ever find the "one". All I can hope for is that I find something to be content with for the time being which will slow my urge to buy something different. Big D1

Looks like most of us have not really found the RIGHT knife, just the right now knife... Somebody has got to keep those makers and manufacturers in business after all :D

Since there is no ONE knife to handle every chore...
I have to say that my Dozier straight personal with desert ironwood handles comes closest to my everything knife. I carry it almost every day, and I use it every day I carry it. It cuts like crazy, fits on my belt unobtrusively, and sure is purty to look at. I can't imagine how I even got through life without if before! (pretty sappy, huh?) Yep, it can't/won't chop stuff, it will never pry anything, and I'll certainly never chop a concrete block with it. But then again, my daddy always told me to use the right tool for the job!

Never one knife.

But... I think I have found my perfect blade shape for all my indoors uses. Radical drop point, sheepscliff, wharnfoot.

The Klotzli Sailor is such a knife. Ultra thin, even thinner than the Mnandi. A thumb stud I can actually use. A decent clip that doesn't get in the way.

For bigger tasks and weekends, an Elishewitz Cortex bolster-lock. bigger, a bit more wharncliffy, but very similar geometry.

Soon to come - a Mayo TNT, to be a duplicate of the knife that Michael Aos has posted.

So I would have to say I at least found a "family" that satisfies my lust for the holy grail.

I have found the one any number of times.

I like collecting older knives and always have a specific knife of some kind in mind. The last one took over five years to locate, and I must have gone through hundreds of B&M stores and internet sites to find it. Now I am after what may be an even rarer knife, perhaps my luck will fail me and I'll will find one in a week, or it may take 10 years. The fun is in the scavenger hunt, and then there is the tremendous high when you finally locate "the one".

My hunt for the perfect EDC is over. I will probably still carry it 40 years from now, maybe even longer. The CR small Sebenza did it for me. I have not looked for another EDC for about 9 months, ever since I got it.

Now that the hunt for the EDC is over, I fing myself looking for fixed blades and large folders for larger chores or when I go camping.

The truth is even if you have found the perfect EDC, you will keep buying other knives that are "perfect" for other chores:)

I haven't found "The Knife" in either folder or fixed blade configuration, and probably never will. But I'll have to say that for sheer utility out hunting, I don't expect to find a knife that outperforms my Marbles Fieldcraft, at least by my standards.

I must say, I do not look for "the one". They all have such unique qualities and In like each for diffrent reasons. Toos compare them would be like comparing apples to oranges.

Hi Mr.G,
Another way this post could read would be, "THE One Knife You Would NEVER Let Go". But even then that would encompass knives that are "special", (i.e. gifts and the like), and not necessarily "the one".

Reading an earlier post about lead times for custom knives brought to mind that what is "the one" now, might not be two years from now. Most all of us, (whether we want to admit it or not), follow fads and trends and what is popular now has a mountain's weight of influence on our decisions.

I've had many "the one's" over the years. Carson's, Ralph's, JWS's, etc. My first "THE" was the Sebenza. I aquired all the Sebenza models a few years back. I remember Chris Reeve telling me at a show years ago that he wished more people would "use" them because that's why he built them, to use. I originally was attracted to Sebenza's because I thought I had found the perfect "user" folder and it did come close. Aesthetics though, play a large part in our knife buying decisions and the Sebenza's aesthetics lost favor with me in the end. Even the inlays or engraving wouldn't do it for me.

The perfect "THE" is the one that every time you pull it out, you have to stop and admire it a little. It's the one that makes you go, "ah-h-h" and smile a little.

You know Gary, and you'll relate to this, some of my "THE's" are my least expensive customs. My little fixed Mike Irie's! Something about these super-useful little fixed blades just DO IT for me. The stag, the quality of construction. I love these things! One of these is that little Sport 400 with that neat leather pouch sheath with the "G" embossed on the front. :)

A couple other "THE's", (that are folders), are a large Bowie-bladed, Ralph Madd Maxx, a JWS/Robertson LDC-5 and a Carson BAK. The Maxx was one of the first Darrell ever made and has the hammer peened finish. It looks like it was formed out of a solid billet. Nothing fancy and just plain gray throughout. Strong as a tank and smooth as butter but exhibits a "roughness", (albiet a "smooth roughness"), that just does it for me. The LDC-5 exhibits a state of quality I had never seen before. Again, nothing fancy but the fit is incredible! I still have both of these. The other big "THE", was a Carson BAK that Kit made up special for me. It was untouchable but an act of supreme kindness from another forumite pushed me to offer it up to him.

In the end though, I believe there IS a "THE" somewhere. Knives to me are like women. I love to look at them, fondle them, (sorry :)), and admire them. I never thought I'd find the perfect one. I FINALLY did though and it was during a moment when I least expected. As we age and "things" become less important, I believe that one "THE" will surface or we've had it all along. ;)

As my experience grows my use becomes more discriminating. First there was THE big knife, THE utility, and THE folder. Then I discovered that big can be big or bigger, and utility comes in many shapes, some better for some tasks, others for yet different ones, and lets not forget THE kitchen knife set

Acquizition in some categories does slow or stop. I haven't bought a larger (more than 4" blade) now in a few years. Mind you I already have camp knives in 4", 5", 6", and 7" blade lengths, and several machetes. Folder buying pretty much stopped 3+ years ago after I got both a large and small Sebenza. I haven't bought a folder since except for gifts, but besides those Sebs, I do already have a half dozen other nice folders in various sizes, so I'm pretty covered there...

At the moment, its smaller hunter/utility fixed blades, where I'm still looking for "THE KNIFE". Of course its going to be some variation of THE 2" blade, THE 3" blade, THE 4" blade....

for what i use a knife for the EKI SOCFK w/a tanto blade works the best for me, prob #2 would be a BM AFCK, either the liner or axis models, #3 crawford custom kasper folding fighter w/a Ti frame.

Well, I guess I would have to say that I've found the TWO knives...The CRK small Sebenza and V-nox Soldier. If you choose to call the SAK a multi-tool, the the answer is the small Sebenza. I do plan to pick up a small classic Sebbie just for variation sake.
Will I buy other knives? Sure I will. But they have a very high standard to live up to.

i used to own 50+ knives and always enjoyed buying more

got a tom mayo tnt 15 months ago and it has been in my pocket ever since ... except for trips requiring an airplane s/p 9/11

down to 5 knives now ...

bought only a couple of knives since last summer... one was a little spyderco bought solely to travel by air with as i have rotton luck with checked bags (and yes they lost our bags on a trip last week  )

i am having a fancy shmancy timascus tnt built but i am content with the tnt.

I hear you guys, I guess the search will never truly be over as long as we are still moving!

This is my Boye/Loveless Persona, small fixed blade of Dendretric 440C cast blade, integral bolster and hidden tang handle of Desert Ironwood, what is so nice about this knife is the way he had shaped the handle, along the bottom it has a V shape right into the bottom of the bolster area, what keeps this from being THE Knife is the lack of a guard, with a guard it'd be pretty dog gone nice, as it stands it still is VERY nice but not one I have to take everyday with me!

Here is a group Scan...about all I can fit on the scanner anyways...

Good looking group though, if I must say so my self! :D

G2
forgot to provide some names of these knives, so, OK, from the top
Rob Criswell, Mike Irie, Chris Reeve Sebenza, Scott Cook small Owyhee, Dobruski 3" butterfly, Boye/Loveless Persona, BM Gents folder with a small piece of mammoth stuck on there...Thanks to Nathan!, Kershaw Double Cross...

If I had acheived THE KNIFE, I wouldn't be around to answer this post.

There is no THE KNIFE for me any more. I recognize that I need several THE KNIVES. Utility folder, SD folder, small utility fixed blade(FB), urban tactical FB, Field knife, camp knife, small fighter, medium fighter, and fighting bowie.

I have found THE utility folder: The Mayo medium TNT.

The SD folder, the Benchmade 710HS.

THE small utility FB, the Blackwood small Hunter in S20V.

THE urban tactical: the Darrel Ralph ALB with full handle.

THE field knife: the 3/16 Mad Dog Arizon Hunter.

THE medium fighter: Hossom Millenium Fighter.

THE fighting Bowie: The Mad Dog Panther.

THE small fighter: Black Cloud/Szabo KerUUK.

Jury is still out on the camp knife.

Yup, now that I've had a chance to look-over this SOG Trident for a couple days, it IS THE knife...At least it is for ME.:).
