who here can can add serrations to a knife?

I guess most people don't like serrations. I never put serrations on the knives I make but my personal EDC folder has serrations. I have been carrying a Spyderco Endura for many years and it has a combo edge. I think I actually use the serrated part more than the plain part. If you're not used to using a serrated edge, you won't miss it and you won't like using it. But if you are used to it then you won't want to be without it, and vice versa. It's like most things in life, you always prefer the things that you're accustomed to.

Working around big boats or commercial fishing boats you will find serrations work very well. This isn't manilla rope being chopped, it's repetitive cuts on synthetic material, whethert heavy lines or webbing. A SAK sharpening rod works well to keep the serrations sharp. Yes, they are butt ugly, but serrations add cutting surface to the blade. They do have their apps, even though it's pretty much a specialty thing.

I do a serrated blade once in a while, just did one for a boat patrol officer. No, I will not do one for agoutihead.

Rick and Gene,
I don't mean to come down so hard on serrations. For cutting rope the way you guys are talking I'm sure a serrated knife would be a great choice.
Our friend agoutihead wants serrations on his "tanto" blade for camping and I was curious why.

Rick, I would very much like for you to bring some of that rope to the necka hammer-in. :D

Agoutihead, If you want serrations on your knife thats fine with me. Collect what you like is a great rule of thumb. But , if your looking for a camp knife that is suited for the tasks at camp a tanto w/ or without serrations is a poor choice in my opinion. Maybe you could start a thread:
"What makes a good camp knife?" I bet you tantos and serrations never come up.

Good luck in your quest.

P.S. Those dark-op knives are great...you can saw down a 5" tree in an hour and then open your beer with it after. I'm surprised they don't come w/ laser sights! (you heard it hear first...next year they will have em.;)

I agree 100% with this statement. I really dont like tanto's in any way shape or form.

Agoutihead, just take a chainsaw file to your blade and be done with it. Good with your hands or not, it's not that hard to do and if it doesn't come out looking just like a production knife, that's cool too. Think of it this way:

1. Mall ninjas don't know better anyway so the irregular serrations won't be noticed by your friends.

2. Even if they do notice just tell them the truth, 'It's an special zombie-killing,trench-handled, serrated, recon/tango-deanimating tanto and the serrations were custom filed for optimum blood spatter control.'

Agoutihead, I camp often, and cut all different kinds of things at work (Lightweight to medium thickness ropes and cords included). I mostly use a wharncliff style (straight edge, sort-of rounded back) blade for everything (The large, hefty one I have is like a little machete, I've chopped 2" caliper trees down with it multiple times).

...But then, using a knife without serrations for actual work requires the kind of quality blade you can't really get from a store. If you want to walk down the dark penniless path we knife makers walk, pick up a copy of the $50 dollar knife shop.. but don't be a mall-ninja, use the search function, etc..

Mace,

I didn't take it wrong. Those serrations do have a limited function, and this thread isn't about that function. So, right on, brother. They are a lousy camp knife. I don't think reason will change anything here. Kind of like another poster who seems to be the leading authority on forged knives.

I don't want to deter Agoutihead from collecting. It's important that he does collect ...and learn. I'll admit I may have one or two knives in my collection that I thought was cool as hell when I got it. Thinking it was good for something like camping only to find out it really wasn't. Hell, I remember camping more than once with my fathers old M1 carbine bayonet!
Sharp knife, and fun to throw at stumps, but not a very good camp knife.

Agoutihead, Please don't let any of this deter you! Forget about all the mall ninja comments. It's one of our jobs as artists and craftsmen to cultivate and educate collectors. Take what you can from this thread and learn from it.

Contact these folks. Seems like they add partial serrations to many of their knives upon request. If memory serves, they cut them in with some sort of machine and jig for uniformity.

They might put serrations on a knife you already own. You might have to order the knife from them. Not sure.

hey guys, i want to get the following knife, but also want serrations in it.

does anyone here do this, or know a good place to send it?

Here you go... the same knife with serrations.

Note that one option (pull down menu) is the 888 Custom Partial Serration. Again, these are serrations that this merchant adds aftermarket.

I would email them and maybe get a picture of their serrations before I proceded with an order.
